Do you shut and lock

all windows are shut and locked. The doors too. In fact I make Dh go around before bedtime and make sure. I used to leave a couple windows open but after Elizabeth Smart I stopped doing that. I don't lock the door during the day if we are all home but I do if I am there alone.

Don't have to I have hurricane windows they open like doors and only from the inside on a crank I love these old windows. I lock the doors sometimes but even though we live close to a medium size city we are out in the middle of nowhere lol. As for a dog we have a shz zu (sp?) he may lick someone to death but that is about all.

You can actually get locks that are installed on the windows that the AC units are in. This prevents someone from knocking the unit out of the window and gaining access. We only have 1 window unit downstairs, and I installed 2 of these locks on the same window (one on each side).

Where did you get them? Lowe's? Home Depot? How do they work?

If our doors and windows are closed, they're locked at all times.

It's rare if our doors and windows are ever open (too hot here in FL!) except around Christmas time.

I'll have to ask DW as she researched and ordered them. Basically they are little "L" shaped things that screw into the top of the window, and then have a very long/sturdy screw that screws into the side of the window casing, basically locking the window into place.

You can also buy a thick square dowel and cut it slightly longer than the distance between the top of the window casing and the actual window. Once the AC is installed, just wedge that dowel in and no one can open that window!

No, no, we don't but then we also don't have a downstairs.

The funny thing is DH is really, really paranoid about locking all the doors but we leave our windows open all summer long. Of course they are so old that the screens don't go up without a ton of struggle so we'd probably wake up before they could get in.

I OTH will go up town and run a couple of errands and leave the doors open during the day.

We do live in a fairly safe town with a very low crime rate and most of the crime that does hit here is after the $5,000 coats at the Burberry Outlet.

I close the shades and lock everything.

always lock everything up tight. I don't think I could sleep peacefully if I didn't!

We usually close the 1st floor windows well before we go to bed because it's always cool on the 1st floor and will get chilly even in the summer if the windows are open after dark. Honestly, DH usually does it and I don't know if he locks them or not. That said, all the ones that we open (on the one side and back of the house) are high enough off the ground that I could just barely peek into them or way too high to reach.

We do lock our doors at night when we go to bed, but we never lock the house during the day whether we're home or not.

We also lock the cars at night. We and our neighbors have had teenagers go into them right after school gets out for the summer. They've never done damage or stolen anything valuable, but we would like to avoid any future incidents.
