Do you remember ?

I know Susquehanna Twnshp. We have played them in tournaments. Here is the history of the school I still coach at. The school is ELCO. Eastern Lebanon County High School. It is a 3A school, 4As are the biggest

The head coach of all Girls' Basketball was Dave Myers. 22 years. Dave just resigned, a couple of weeks ago.

I was Dave's paid Assistant Varsity Coach, but I have dropped down to a volunteer status.

I am not quite sure how things are going to shake out. I would like to stay at ELCO this coming season, but when dominos are pushed they all topple.

This is a fact of life and you have to treat it as a business decision.

I know Hershey, and Ephrata (both 4As) have an interest in me and I could be swayed to make a change.

I am a fundamental teacher of basketball, that is my strength. A role I absolutely love. Xs and Os (plays) are fun, but watching a lady on the foul line having trouble and before you know it, that Lady is nailing three pointers. Pulling the pass in with her weak hand and in one motion, transfering it to her shooting hand and then swish. A sweet sound.

The ladies I coach are excellent student athletes and I would be fibbing if ; 'Hey Coach O' or 'Coach, I can use your help', is not an ego trip. My biggest fault as a coach is, I may be over protective of my charges.

Nothing wrong with that! Two years ago at a swim meet someone asked me "which swimmer is yours"(son/daughter)? I smiled and said, "They're all mine". Last summer we had a girl who could barely make it across the pool. By the end of the season, she was doing 50's. I was thrilled for her! You know the feeling.

Good luck with the coaching carousel! A team will be lucky to have you.

To get this back on topic...

First car was a '56 Dodge Coronet with push button transmission. In the space for the glove compartment there was an option for a small turntable/record player!

First vehicle in 86. Was 16 with a 79 Ford F250 with a 400 under the hood. Thought I was coooool. Now I realize I was only kinda cool and that was because my parents paid for the gas in the dual tanks. :sad2: Not coooool.

And people wonder why my generation is so screwed up!

"Where do you go when things get rough ?"

PLUTOSPUP: Subject my coaching: On ELCO'S website is an advertisement for a Girls' HS Varisty Coach (vacancy)---I will not apply for this position. There may be individuals that hope I will take the job. I just am not interested.

MY GOALS: The Coach of the Middle School Varsity (8th grade) may have an interest. I hope so. I would love to take over the MS program.

I mentioned Hershey & Ephrata are interested in me. This would also be Middle School programs. Varsity (8th grade)JV (7th Grade).

My reasoning: When girls' come up from the MS they are desparately lacking in (a key word I used) FUNDAMENTALS. The MS coaches are more geared to events (games) and this is OK with me, but it would make the coaches at the HS level concentrate their time on the fine tuning of the team, not starting from scratch teaching proper shooting form, passing, etc.

Dave Myers, at an annual basketball banquet, said "In all my years coaching, Coach O' is by far the best one on one coach that I have ever had"

That was a super compliment and again, that is my calling. A FUNDAMENTAL teacher of Basketball. This is my comfort zone.

PS: It seems everbody is rooting for Butler---Sorry "Go Duke" and coach K

I couldn't agree more-FUNDAMENTALS!!!!!

Middle school is the perfect place to "teach" a sport. Those that are successful at coaching this level have a passion for the sport, and a desire to see their "athlete sponges" learn the sport. The best High School programs start in Middle School

My DD12 had strength, but was never taught good fundamentals. This year she finally entered a swim program that wasn't based on "this year's outcome", but in fundamentals, and long term growth. Amazing how she grew in the sport, and enjoyed herself!

Good luck Coach! I'm rooting for you!

I'm sure your athletes are already saying, "Remember when Coach O..."

When I was a young tyke---I know, I know. Now that everybody knows my age ; a young tyke. You were never young. I can handle that.

Starting over--When I was a young tyke, my Mom, who was originally from Connellsville PA and I was born in Philly, we went to Mom's hometown in the summer.

One evening my Aunt Helen said "let's walk down to Beebees and get a POP. I had no idea what she was talking about. It turned out to be soda. Is POP alive and well and is it used outside of Connellsville Penna. That is the only time I have ever heard soda being called POP.

If somebody says, Philly. Understandable, you being a cousin of Ben Franklin. Hold on, I am not that old.

No its just a Penna thing. We are notorious for being decades behind the times and not wanting to get current with the rest of the world.

"The other side of the Susquehanna River is a different world". East of the Susquehanna it's soda, while to the west it's pop.

Don't tell the teeming masses of "Chicagoland" that. Ya might get

Boy, would today's kids be dumb founded with our first phone. No it did not have a crank on it. We were higher tech than that.

It did not take pictures, it was big and ugly, it did not ring with a rapper song, and it sat on a table and just stared at you. It did not have a dial. Yes a dial, not a keypad. Again, we did not have a dial. You say 'how did it work' ??????

You picked it up, waited a few minutes or hours and then ; almost like a recording "number please". You gave the operator the number and a voice from somewhere or nowhere said "get off the line, I have an important call".

They called this system a 'Party Line'. I never understood this. I was never invited to their party and I was a good boy. Sometime.

john

Ive heard my mom talk about the "party line" phones....where the entire neighborhood shared one line, and everyone had a specific ring style if the incoming call was for your home.

The world changed forever on 11/22/63.

my mother-in-law & brother-in-law are visiting me right now from michigan. they call it pop too. yankees! what are ya gonna do with 'em?

A roller skate without a shoe. They were all metal (2 parts) and you could adjust them, with a special key, for length. Each roller skate had 2 straps to TRY and keep them attached to your shoes or sneeks. Try is important.

The key also was used to adjust width. I am not even going to try and explain that.

As boys, we found out that one skate taken apart and screwed into a 2 1/2 foot 1" X 2" board, and a rectangular box with home made handles screwed into the front of the 2 1/2 ft board, made a great scooter. We had a name for this. Soapbox is stuck in my head, but that was not the name.

The hardest part of the scooter was keeping the front and rear rollers, on the board, aligned. If you were off, the darn thing made unintended right or left turns.

My dad took us to this little restaurant called Sambos a few times when we would go out of town....I was little......really little, so I dont remember what city or state this was in. But I remember thinking of the jungle book when looking at the menu.
