They weren't after school specials-- at original air time they were Saturday morning shows.
After school specials were always the Hallmark movie variety that were show about every six weeks or so. That was more of the "teens smoking pot, pregnancy, parents divorcing" kind of thing. There were shows that were on after school-- Banana Splits, Monkees, etc., but that varied on market.
Sid and Marty Krofft did a tons of kids shows in the late 60's early 70s.
They did HR Pufnstuff, Lidsville, Sigmund the Sea Monster, Bugaloos, Land of the Lost
The Banana Splits were designed by Sid and Marty Krofft but to me wasn't not a full Sid and Marty fabulous like HR Pufnstuff and others. Pufnstuff was on before I was born, but I do remember first runs of Land of the Lost and Sigmund.
Believe it or not there was a Sid and Marty Krofft amusement park for a little while back in the 70's. I seem to remember cartoons as well.
The Kroffts also did TONS of vareity shows during the 70's and 80's... Donny and Marie, Barbara Mandrell, and I think the Brady Bunch variety show.
In the 70's the Kroffts had tons of projects on TV. They are very talented pupetters.. and were known for a risque puppet show in the late 60s.
