My boys are picking up a southern-ism. They put things "up" as opposed to saying they are putting things away.

Great question.

:goodvibes When my girls were little (now 37 & 33) it depended on if the items were dangerous or not. To keep them from getting hurt I put things "UP" out of reach. If they were helping me clean, we put things "AWAY" in a closet, shelf or drawers. :goodvibes

No that's not what I asking. Away versus Up is not an actual location.

Most of the time, I put things "away". If I'm irritated and have told one DS or the other to do it, it's PUT IT UP!!!

I don't know why that is. I'm not southern though, I'm in Ohio???

I think it's a midwest thing as well as a Southern thing. We have family in Michigan and Ohio and they say "put this up" as well.
Here in Florida you hear both. Southerners will tend to say up, while most Northern transplants will say away.

I say up. Great thread.. I never even thought about that.

I also say "come see" instead of "come here." I think that might be just a Louisiana thing though?

I'm from Noo Yawk originally but I don't think its just a Southern thing my 1st husband was from Italy...I put things away he put things up I turn the light off he shuts the light and opens the light instead of turning it on....haven't thought about that in years...good thread OP

i'm a nola girl and i say up and come see too!

also say i'm going to make groceries. now that is a NOLA phrase!

We put things away. When we put things away, we are also cleaning up. We don't put things up.

To put something up, means the kids were not our usual angels and they aren't getting it back for a while.

I was born and raised in Baton Rouge, and we pick things up or put them away. We also fix dinner instead of make dinner. We are also fixin' to go somewhere.

Oh and yes, my mom used to make groceries and I say "come see" instead of come here.

I "pick up" or "put away." Born in VT, raised in FL, currently back in VT.
