Great question.
When my girls were little (now 37 & 33) it depended on if the items were dangerous or not. To keep them from getting hurt I put things "UP" out of reach. If they were helping me clean, we put things "AWAY" in a closet, shelf or drawers.

Most of the time, I put things "away". If I'm irritated and have told one DS or the other to do it, it's PUT IT UP!!!
I don't know why that is. I'm not southern though, I'm in Ohio???
I say up. Great thread.. I never even thought about that.
I also say "come see" instead of "come here." I think that might be just a Louisiana thing though?
I was born and riased in Baton Rouge, and we pick things up or put them away. We also fix dinner instead of make dinner. We are also fixin' to go somewhere.
Oh and yes, my mom used to make groceries and I say "come see" instead of come here.
