Do You Plan To Tip Above the DDE 18%?

I am disappointed that so many here feel the need to penalize a random server, providing good service in the here and now. If you want to protest this undesirable policy, send the message to Disney management.

The servers' unions are the ones who lobbyed for that change. They got what they wanted, and what they wanted was an 18% tip. So that's what I'll tip.

I don't think they'll be penalized. From everyone I've ever talked to who has waited tables from dive restaurants to places where the chef is a celebrity - a 20% tip is an exception - and those of you tipping 25% on a full meal are very rare birds indeed. Many, many people tip 15% - some still tip less - and others stiff their servers. If the servers don't end up coming out ahead on this, I'd be shocked.

And last I checked, they could quit if its a pay cut and they feel like they are being penalized. I'm sure that in Orlando there are lots of restaurants that are continually hiring.

Why are so many of you saying I normally tip 20%, but I will just leave the automatice 18% as is? If the service has not changed from when you left 20%, why tip less now? Is the mathematics behind the extra 2% so mind boggling? No wonder ever year we hear how the students in the United States come in 37th place, just behind Uzbekistan in mathematics in school. (There was no offense intended for the fine young students in Uzbekistan in this statement.)

Disney has decided that 18% is the proper tip, who am I to argue with them?

We always tipped (for good service) 20% because it was easy to figure out in our heads. Now we will just do the automatic 18% cause my head hurts if I do to much math on vacation.

What she said. I've always tipped 20% because it was easier to figure out. If they're going to do 18% for me then I'll tip 18% unless we're extra demanding, sit around for a really long time or make a big mess at the table.

The 'servers' union' does not exist.
There is one union for about 16,000 Cast Members - the vast majority of whom are NOT servers, and thus do not care one way or another about servers' tips.
The servers did not lobby for a mandatory service charge added to anything.

Then who did ? Someone had to care enough to push Disney management to make that decision, and I doubt it's the guy who works at Haunted Mansion.

We always tipped between 20 and 25 percent. Now it is most likely I will just leave it at the 18 percent. I have two small children to wrap up after dinner and i'll let DIsney do the math and since that's what they decided.... no need to change it.

According to reports (see posts from disneyserver in the summer of 2007), Disney offered it as a non-negotiable part of the new contract - if anybody lobbied for the change, it was Disney.

That's not the way I understood it from reading the posts. I understood that Disney made the removal of the grat. from the DDP a non-negotiable part of the new contract and in return the union asked for and got the auto grat added to the DDE card. Even if that's not true - the servers on this board have made it clear that they were unhappy with the way DDE card holders tipped. If Disney was indeed the one to offer the auto grat for DDE members they did so because of the complaints of servers.

I don't know, just lazy I guess. I'll admit it, I avoid arithmetic whenever possible.

Well, personally it's a combination of many things, including not liking "being told how much to tip" and always being cajoled by my ex-server wife for my continual 'over-tipping'...since I routinely tip >20% on the post-tax total, and now the auto-grat will be only 18% of the pre-tax ttl, unless the service really warrants it (or our kids are really messy eaters that night), I'll be among the "lazy" who don't bother to add on any extra....or at most, I'll restore the total back to the pre-DDE reduction total, and still end up "saving "money" in the fictionalized world that is within my brain...

I agree with you....this is the way I heard it happened. I guess it could be "turned" around to say "Disney" made this non-negotiable. You could say Disney "forced" this because they refused to keep the gratuity included in the DDP. I guess it depends on your perception.

That's the way I understood it as well, and IMO it makes more sense. Why would Disney force a mandatory tip on DDE, thus making the card less appealing for some, when that 18% is not going in their pocket ?

Hahaha, this thread is funny. Everyone online is a 20-25% tipper, but in the real world, DDE holders average like 10-15%

I agree with the poster that says that a mandatory tip is not really a tip at all, but a service charge for waiting on you. My DH is usually a pretty good tipper especially if the service was good or maybe we took up the table too long. If Disney is going to demand that 18% be paid, then 18% is what they will get.
I'm not a person that really likes to be told how much to give.

:rotfl: Like years ago when someone called and asked for a donation from us. We had just had quite a run of bad luck and really couldn't afford it, but I still told them that I could spare $10. They told me that their lowest donation amount was $25. I quickly said "then I guess you don't want my $10 very bad" and hung up.:rotfl:

No - we're just the one's willing to post. No one is going to post that they are cheap and didn't tip well. However, there does appear to be quite a few of us - prehaps you under estimated the amount of people who tip well because you were annoyed with those who didn't?

To discourage guests from signing up for or continuing with DDE? It's the only reason I can come up with...

In that case why would they start selling the card on property, instead of by mail or phone only like it used to be ? Doesn't seem like they're trying to discourage guests from signing up when they make it easier for them to get the card.
