Do You Plan To Tip Above the DDE 18%?

Again, the server is the one that loses here if you tipped above 18% before the change. If you want to speak with your money, do not buy and use the DDE card.

The servers (well, the union, really) are the ones who demanded that mandatory tip, not the DDE people. Disney took the tip out of the DDP, so they needed to make up for that loss. I understand the reasons behind it, but that doesn't mean I like it. Actually, I'm starting to understand why so many posters here are anti-DDP, since somehow it's always up to the other customers to make up for its deficit.

Nice try, but too late. Bought it in 2007. They changed the rules on us, after the fact. Do not tell us not to buy the DDE card when we had absolutely no control over how the program would change.

We usually tip 20% (unless the service is bad) and ~25% for really good service. But now? 18% is going to be it.

However, I will make an exception for really good service and give them an extra $5-10 in cash after paying the standard bill + tip.

my typical tip was always at least 20%, but since someone has decided that I can't be trusted to do the right thing (in effect IMO treating me like a cheapskate) I will not be leaving extra. It just rubbed me the wrong way. sorry if that sounds cold and punishes the wrong party, but actions have consequences.

May I suggest applying at Home Depot ?

Hahaha, sorry, don't feel like taking a huge income loss, unless they wanted me an a General Manager maybe. If you are refering to me as a server, I haven't done that in several years. I just know several disney servers VERY well, and having lots of serving experience through high school and college, its fun to be able to get across what all servers are thinking, but can never say.

But anyway, it doesn't matter anymore. Your DDE customers will now have to leave you an 18% tip, whether you deserve it or not, and you can leave the "screwing" to the regular and DDP customers. That'll give you a whole new group of people to be mad at.

We have several Disney servers here on the DIS and they share their opinions on Disney Dining issues often - both positive and negative.

Let them talk for themselves, would you ? Right now all you're doing is pi**ing off a lot of their regular customers, and your "friends" are the ones who may have to pay for it.

Well I'll let those servers let me know when I'm way out of line with my statement. I'll then PM them in names and numbers they can call if they think I'm lying.

They're probably busy working and earning their 18% tip.

Any of them PM you so far to thank you for your statements?

Have people PMed me agreeing...yup.

Have cast members PMed me agreeing...nope. Disney is like big brother. No one is going to come here, admit to being a cast member, say where they work, and then starting ranting on things they hate, idiot guests, etc. Disney will have them at the unemployment line in no time.

I am ordinarily a 20-25% tipper (unless service is baaaad), but since it will be added in automatically I probably won't leave more than that.

Us too, I can't remember the last time we only left 18% as a tip. Many times for great service hubby leaves 30 to 50%.

Now with the 18%..I am thinking that will be it. I am wondering if there are that many poor tippers out there that the servers think they will be better off with the tip added in???

I would imagine most servers that work for Disney are happy to have such a good job. The CMs that rant about things they hate, idot guests, etc. have no buisness working there. There are many, I'm sure, who would be happy to have their positions.

Ditto from ElastiGirl and MrIncredible. Unless the service is outstandingly fabulous, we plan to leave the automatic 18% and nothing more.

Frankly, I think that the automatic 18% policy stinks. I've discussed with a couple of cast members; one a shop steward, he said that it wasn't the union's idea, but management's.

Also, we're staying at CBR currently, although we're saving more than the 20% DDE discount on the food court, I'm not really pleased that Shutters (open only for dinner) means that we can't get a DDE discount at breakfast and lunch at the food court. Oh well, it doesn't make a difference financially, just seems a bit odd practically.

I think one of the things thats surprises and amazes me the most is the servers that feel they are being stiffed IF they aren't tipped on the amount of the bill before the discount. (and at least 18% of course)
It's customary to tip on the pre-discounted amount. That is not unique to Disney, or to 2008. As far as considering a post-discount tip 'stiffing', as far as I know not leaving a tip at all is what 'stiffing' is. Leaving a tip calculated on the post-discount check is 'shorting' the server, but not stiffing them.
As for the 18% - well, that's sorta something Disney caused, by accustoming servers to that percentage when Disney took responsibility for the DDP tip. Customary (there's that word again) or recommended tipping in resort locations, big cities, and um, upscale restaurants is 15% to 20% (or more). The average of these two amounts is 17.5%; Disney simply rounded up - based on basic math practices (zero to four, round down; five to nine, round up).

I'm with others, I wont give more - I resent the automatic "tax" (I cant call it a "tip" if its automatic, tax isnt the right word I know, but I have to pay tax so its what works right now!)
Call it what it is - a service charge (that's how it's listed on most room service menus). Which brings up another question: Would people be less aggravated if Disney just stepped up and changed what they're calling it?
when we were on Free Dining we always left more (sometimes $5 sometimes $10) for great service - not anymore - that's done.
But unless you're a party of six or more, if you're using the Dining Plan - free or paid - you get to decide how much to tip. I did read somewhere that there will be certain percent recommendations on the checks (18% and 20%) but that doesn't mean non-DDE users/non-large parties HAVE to tip those percentages.

Another question: Has anybody with an active (especially newly-activated) DDE membership contacted Disney and asked about cancelling it and getting refunded because the rules changed after you purchased it?

Interesting question, I wonder though if that would be "protected" under a terms may change phrase on the paperwork somewhere?

We got our DDE in July and used it for 3 trips since, so I'd feel ridiculous if I tried to get a refund now. However, if we had gotten it in December only to learn weeks later of the new tipping rule, I would have contacted Disney and complained.

It's not so much the fact that the tip is mandatory that bothers me, or the amount (18% is a fair amount IMO), so much as the fact that it only applies to DDE and large parties. Customers who pay regular prices or guests on DDP still have control over what they tip, but we don't. This feels more like a punishment than anything else.

I still think it's funny they consider a "large" party more than 5 guests. Just DH, the kids and myself adds up to a "large" party!

I don't think the number is unique to Disney, though. More and more restaurants seem to be reducing the number of diners considered "large party".

Someday it's going to be three people...

Great point! You almost never see this for parties of less than 8 anywhere, and generally its much higher than that. I really dont undersand why they lowered it considering before it was at least in line with 'some' standards that werent entirely uncommon.
