My sons were killed on Christmas eve by a drunk driver. I gave birth to a 1 lb. baby the next day. Don't tell me about dead babies and Christmas toys. I know exactly how that mom felt, except I couldn't even grieve my boys because I was praying every second of every day for the next 2 motnhs that their lsisiter would live.
If you read waht I said you would have seen that I believe that it is a good thing that everyone has their own pet causes. There are so many needs in this world.

That's horrible! I'm so sorry to hear this.
I agree that everyone has pet causes and I think that's a good thing, too. There are probably tons of people who think that some of my favorite causes are silly, and I can think of a few other causes to which other people donate that I feel are silly. That's the beauty of charitable giving, though... we can all donate to the causes that we feel are important, and no one is obligated to donate to causes they disagree with.
As far as the OP, we give to lots of causes, not just big ones, but the amount of money given to each generally says something about how "big" we think the cause is. For example, we give pretty substantial amounts to:
Komen Foundation
March of Dimes
American Red Cross
American Heart Association
American Cancer Society
Starlight/Starbright Foundation
MS Research
Food Banks
Homeless Shelters
Habitat for Humanity
We give a little less, but still a decent size check to organizations like schools, museums, Public Radio, Planned Parenthood, scouting and environmental causes.
We give little tidbits to many "smallish" causes, or even if the cause isn't so "small", if the fundraising means is. I'll throw my change in almost any collection jar on a check-out counter, and give a couple of bucks to the Salavation Army bell ringer each time I walk by one. We bought a couple of $1 rubber bracelets to help out a local family in need recently, even though I honestly don't think they should've had so many kids if they couldn't afford them. My feelings on that would prevent me from giving them a lot of money, but a couple of bucks won't hurt me and will still add up if a lot of people like me do the same.
