Do you like being called "The Wife?"

When I first heard a guy referring to his spouse as "the wife" I thought it sounded kind of impersonal, like maybe he couldn't stand to refer to the woman as "my wife." But I'm seeing/hearing this reference more often, so I'm interested in how the women here at The Dis feel about it. If you're a guy, do you refer to her as "the wife?"

My wife has always been my wife. She's been ok with it for 41 years.

I don't think that would bother me but I can't stand to hear a woman refer to her husband as "hubs" or "hubby".

DH has never called me "THE wife" - always "my wife." Not a huge fan of the "the"...

"the wife" sounds cold to me, I don't like it personally. My husband says "my".

Maybe that's it, I just know that I see it more all the time. I thought perhaps "my wife" sounds too much like a possession? If that's the case I could understand that. It will be interesting to hear more opinions.

Whenever I hear anyone say something like, "I have to talk to the wife about it." I always want to say, "What wife?" But I bite my tongue.

Doesn't bother me but I called my husband "the old guy", so what do I know. lol, my hubby called me "she who must be obeyed". worked for me

As with anything I would say it would depend upon the tone with which my husband said it. We are fairly sarcastic with each other.

I rarely call him my husband, but jokingly refer to him as "boss". Anyone who knows us gets a kick out of that one...

Not a huge fan of THE wife. The one that gets me is women calling all sorts of people "wifey". WTH is that?!?!?!?! A wife is a wife. Your female friend is not your wife. Your daughter is not your wife. Your male friend is not your wife. Just stop that!

I'm not a huge fan of "the wife" but I agree with others that there are worse things a man could refer to his wife as. Baby mama, ball and chain, and old lady all spring to mind. I would take the wife over any of those any day.

I find it objectifying and demeaning. I'm not even really comfortable when DH refers to me as "my wife" without following it up with my name. Of course, I'm an old feminist from the 70s who kept my own name when we got married. DH is cool with that; he's just happy that I'm still here with him, still crazy after all these years! (31, but who's keeping count?)
