Do you leave your keys in the ignition?

I stopped by the closest convenience store a few minutes ago. I noticed the truck I parked next to had no one around it, but the keys were in the ignition. It was a company work truck, had lots of things in the back that might be worth something if someone knew what the heck they were (construction stuff, maybe). The windows were down, also. There have been times where I have locked my keys in the vehicle I'm driving, but as far as I know, I've never deliberately left the keys in there. Besides pure laziness, why would someone leave the keys in the ignition. Isn't that inviting trouble?

I agree with you...it is inviting trouble. Luckily, my car won't let me lock the doors ( which I always do ), if the keys are still in the ignition.

I never leave my keys in my car. I don't have the money to buy another one and I am not leaving an invitation for some thug to come and take it.

our car has been broken into three times in a GARAGE before. i don't need to invite any more theives.

I always take my keys and lock my doors, even if I'm just going inside to pay for gas. I don't want my insurance agent laughing at me if someone steals my car.

In some places it's against the law to leave your keys in the car, even if it's locked and you have a keypad on the door to unlock it. I know someone who got a ticket for that in Fort Worth once.

Really, Kermit? Interesting. I've heard some insurance companies will not pay for damages if someone steals your car and does some damage with your vehicle if they find out you left the keys in the ignition.

I did once, with the car running, but purely by accident. It was 2 days before my wedding, the day of my rehearsal dinner. I was out running one of a million last minute errands and I must have had too much on my mind. When I was leaving the mall I couldnt find my keys in my pocketbook. I panicked and ran to see if I locked them in the car. When I arrive I could see them in the ignition...the closer I got I could hear the car running. I couldnt believe how stupid I was!

Heck in NY you didn't need to leave your keys to have no car left when you got back, sometimes while you were IN IT!

Yes, I often leave my keys in the car -- especially in my driveway if I know that I'll be going out again soon. HECK, we only recently began to lock our doors to our house -- and I often go away and leave the front door open too ---- Shame on Me!

Well, we had a horrible car, you know the kinds when its better off stolen.. you know you still have payments, and the parts are dying kind of thing... well, we were in Camden NJ, (for all of you who dont know its a very urban area), and left the keys in it...

NOBODY STOLE IT! We were young and stupid what could I say?

My parents still do, same with my FIL, but they are in the garage...

When I lived in Wyoming, in high school (70's), it was common for everyone to leave the key in the ignition. We usually just had one key, not on a ring, and always left it in the ignition. I don't live there anymore, so I don't know if that's still done. I always take my keys out now, but it was a hard habit to break after I moved to Colorado. Now I drive a Beetle and the lock/alarm button is on the key itself, so I never leave them in it.

We just had two cars stolen from our parking lot at the post office I work at. Would you believe one of them was the SUV of a judge? Yep, left the keys in it and left it running......He said later they found it, but boy was it trashed!
Then just yesterday a deputy sheriff left his in the ignition while coming inside. Luckily a little elderly lady read HIM the riot act!

All the time. We live in a really small town - winter population about 200. So when I run to the PO or to the little variety store I leave my car running most of time.

We hardly ever lock our doors, but having 3 dogs helps there.

At work I do to but then again you would have to be a bold thief to hit our lot. We have lots of vehicles with funny blue lights on top and men with guns running around.
