do you leave butter on the counter?

I use a butter bell and would not otherwise leave my butter out on the counter. Maybe it's a climate thing (living in Louisiana and Houston most of my life where it is hot and humid 9 months of the year), but I don't think I know anyone who leaves butter out.

I would consider using a butter bell to be leaving it out (i.e. not in the refrigerator). You say you don't know anyone who leaves butter out, but (to me) you do. Perhaps different posters are defining "leaving out" differently. I must be confused or just missing something. :confused3

My MIL's cardiologist told her not to use margarine. He said if you leave margarine out it will turn hard like plastic and even mice our insects won't eat it.

So my IL tried it. Put margarine out in the garage for a week or so(?). Turned hard was not touched by bugs (and there are a lot in FL).

Yes! I saw this too on a program like 60 minutes or 20/20 or something...that you can leave margarine out and mice or even flies will not touch the stuff! That tells me it it NOT naturally edible, lol.

We only eat real butter, which we leave in the cupboard in a butter dish. My parents did it, my husbands parents did it, and we do it. Absolutly no butter-related deaths in either family, lol.

I consider a butter bell leaving it out, too. My parents have one (that I got them as a gift, actually) and it's a great idea. I'd like to get one someday, too, but for now, it's just in a regular butter dish.

Butter in dish, out on counter.

I wasn't going to bother reading the whole thread, figuring there was no way it would be interesting and then realized this is the Dis!! Of course "Do you leave your butter on the counter" can become an argument

Off to go read up on the great butter battle...

WE use real organic butter, we refrigerate it and freeze the rest of it when we purchase a lot of it when on sale:rolleyes1.

We do not use non fat, light, or any substitutes for anything that can be made using its whole counterpart( i.e. milk, butter, cheese)

We love the good stuff and we tend to not use anything that is unrecognizable by our body as food:rolleyes1

My Grandma used to leave her freshly churned butter out in a butter dish once she finished making it. It never went bad and was very tasty! I miss my Grandma wish she was still here:guilty:. That women could make a mean cream cheese pound cake:goodvibes:angel:

Growing up we left it on the counter in a covered dish. Now I keep it in the fridge, rarely on the counter, unless I'm going to use it for baking or something in particular. It melts too fast when it's hot here and we have cats who like to try to eat it. LOL :)

Like some other posters, I had no idea that leaving butter out was even an option! But I'm a native Floridian (from South Florida to boot), so leaving it out here is probably just not practical.

We do, however, leave the Parmesan cheese on the counter and not in the fridge. Dun dun DUN!

Our fridge has a space in the door for butter. Our butter stays there.

My parents do, they like to but the sticks from the Amish. They had to start putting it in the microwave because the dog discovered how good it was. :rotfl: She was so good about it she could lift the cover, get the butter and make it look like it wasn't her. But my mom caught her. She is a very tall St. Bernard.

They go through it pretty fast.

I buy small tubs of butter and always put in back in the fridge. We don’t use it often.

I'm the only one who really uses it for my toast every morning and I want it in a dish, on the kitchen table. Nothing worse than cold butter tearing up my toast....:lmao:

we leave ours out. My mother just gave me a French butter keeper. I haven't put it to use yet, but I do like the idea behind it.

The one pictured on that page is not mine but the same principle, uses water.

I had one of these for years and LOVED it. I dropped it and broke it though and haven't found a replacement. It keeps the butter nice and soft.

who wants to take bets on when the spin-off thread will start??? :lmao:

Growing up (farming family if it makes any difference) we always left the butter on the table or counter in a tupperware sealed butter dish or a ceramic butter dish. Now as an adult I don't leave the butter out but we rarely ever use it either. I do buy a tub of "spreadable" (aka fake) butter in case we want some buttered bread but it's not nearly as good as real butter on bread. Maybe I will start leaving it out again and see if we use it :confused3

I honestly can't think of anyone I know who leaves it out. My husbands family lives in the country and my mil looked at me like I had two heads when I asked her about it. The real butter in my frig says keep refrigerated so that's what I will do.

Growing up as a kid we had a butter warmer in our fridge. I dont think they make those anymore. For years the butter has been left on the counter in a butter dish. We go though a stick quickly though.
