I just found out. Not even sure I'm spelling it right either. ;)

DD and her friends were talking about the "EMOS" at school. I totally thought they meant kids who looked like Emo Phillips - I'm such a dork. :rotfl:

Do you know what an EMO is? I think I got the explanation down pretty well from DD, but I'd like to hear yours as well. :)

This is the definition I got from Urban Dictionary:

Genre of softcore punk music that integrates unenthusiastic melodramatic 17 year olds who dont smile, high pitched overwrought lyrics and inaudible guitar rifts with tight wool sweaters, tighter jeans, itchy scarfs (even in the summer), ripped chucks with favorite bands signature, black square rimmed glasses, and ebony greasy unwashed hair that is required to cover at least 3/5 ths of the face at an angle.

And that's pretty much what I consider emo. I knew a lot of kids like that in high school. But now being "scene" is what's in  I hate trends :rotfl:

Emo is a type of music. Its in my opinion lousy. Think of it as todays punk meets teenage angst.

Yes, I do, and please don't confuse them with goths. All of the REAL goths I know are very happy people.

My daughter loves EMO guys. For fun, go to YouTube or google and type in, " I must be EMO". It's a funny little song poking fun at EMO kids. My daughter is the one that showed me. It will give you a generic defintion of what EMO is. BTW, EMO is short for "emotional".

Emo used to be a kind of music. now its deteriorated into the above examples.

Choppy hair, dark clothes, dark glasses, sad poetry...you get the picture.

Yes - that is EXACTLY what my DD said. Emos are NOT happy and they are never to be confused with Goths. :teeth:

Oh, I suppose you're referring to the "other" goths who are all "woe is me, life is so hard, no one understands me!" as they sip their starbucks coffee and drive their parents SUV's :rotfl:

Think of a very sad goth, but less goth, more harry potter.

Oh yea...emo is sooo "out"... :lmao:

Officially "emo" is a style of punk rockers that listen to punk music.

However, in school it is kids that "have nothing to live for" and claim to be suicidal/angry/etc... even though they are not.:rotfl:
Basically here it is rich kids that like to dress a certain way and pretend to hate life.
Going "emo" is similiar to "going postal" although it is on yourself.

Oh and the wierd part is guys wear GIRL'S JEANS & clothes...My 10th grade dd thinks it is hilarious.

She is called "emo" all the time although she is not. She is a gothy, emo, has here own style kid.

I wore a pair of jeans to school one day, walked into my algebra class and a guy was wearing the same jeans.

and no, I don't wear guy's jeans.

On the Gothic Beauty website...we sort of eat emos for breakfast :p Maybe it's because we're older and past that "life sucks and I should just kill myself" stage.

Thanks for the PSA, Sparx ;) . Having seen the pix and details I now can identify an emo when I see one.

To venture a guess... Goth is more total black dress, perhaps some studded accessories thrown in for good measure. I am assuming an emo would exhibit more of this   and a Goth more of this :furious: :furious: .

Yeah, my ex-boyfriend wore girls jeans. There's one reason we broke up. The last thing I needed was a guy who looked better in girls jeans than I do  :rotfl:

That totally struck me as funny for some reason. :rotfl:

I agree, Emo's are not Goths. Although a lot of so-called "Goths" are also not true Goths.

The whole emo thing began as a sub-section of punk back in the late '70s and slowly bacame more mainstream. It added metalcore as an offshoot about a decade ago. Emo has become more and more mainstream over the years, and what is currently known as "emo" is really pretty far removed from it's original roots. Think Panic! At the Disco, Fall Out Boy, Death Cab for Cutie, and perhaps even older GreenDay if you want to stretch it. The first (and thankfully only  ) metalcore band that comes to my mind is A7X.

Goth spun out of the same punk sub-culture at about the same time, but stayed far less mainstream over the years. Goth is generally a darker sound and look. Evanescence is often considered a Goth band, although I'm not really sure I'd agree with that, particularly when I think of one of the first Goth bands, Alien Sex Fiend. Lacuna Coil is a nu-metal band with a lot of "Goth" undertones, and is probably a better comparison.
