Do you know what an EMO is?

I thought EMO was Emergency Medical Office. that's what we use if the doctor isn't in. Yes I am old  and apparently waaaaay out of the loop.

I just found out. Not even sure I'm spelling it right either. ;)

DD and her friends were talking about the "EMOS" at school. I totally thought they meant kids who looked like Emo Phillips - I'm such a dork. :rotfl:

Do you know what an EMO is? I think I got the explanation down pretty well from DD, but I'd like to hear yours as well. :)

I just heard this term about 2 weeks ago from my nephews (14 and 21). They said it stood for emotional. I also thought Emo Phillips :rotfl: Boy I'm old. My older nephew says my younger nephew listens to emo music. My younger nephew took offense and said it is punk (oh the drama).

Examples of early 90's EMO music:

Cap'n Jazz
Joan of Arc
The Promise Ring

Much different than today's "EMO" music.

Earlier, you might even be able to label Fugazi as a type of EMO.

okay, sorry, just had to add that.

:lmao: :rotfl2:

My daughter loves Emo music. She describes herself as a happy Emo. At fourteen I don't think she sees the oxymoron there. She is far from what a true Emo is but she does love the music. Also she thinks the boys are cute. I find them wearing girl pants hilarous and think wait until they have kids.

Since we have music people here how do you label "Chemical Romance" and "Disturbed"?

I'm not sure about Disturbed, but Blender magazine calls My Chemical Romance an emo band.

MCR is a hyrbid between an Emo and a straight ahead rock sound. I think they started more towards Emo and have morphed, particularly with their latest CD.

Disturbed is a hard rock/nu-metal hybrid. Draiman can sing better than most, gotta say that for sure, although they are far from my favorite band.

Oh yeah, I used to like the Promise Ring-- back then, "emo" was way different than what it is now. The music was still pretty whiney though. ;)

I interviewed Promise Ring at a house show for my zine.

Way back when I was cool. :smokin:

Thanks for the explanations!!!:thumbsup2

I am new to some of it...My girls have taken a sudden interest in "emo" bands.
MCR is actually pretty good.

With "Disturbed"...might find this funny....my dd says mom check out this song on TV (gotta love on demand).
Well it was "Disturbed" singing "Land of Illusion" (in anime) from of course Phil Collins...
So off to YouTube and showed her.;) :happytv:

In my senior year of highschool, ppl were starting to get "EMO-y " (2000-2001). I always thought of them as goth/punk Wannabees... not goth or punk.. more goth/punk-lite..lol

The education I receive on these boards never ceases to amaze me! My 7th grade DS has been using this word for more than a year now, but has never mentioned the music aspect. I did get the EMO = EMOTIONAL connection, and DS also said the group used to be made up of "cutters." Now it seems to have become more of a fashion choice, as he's complained that several formerly "preppy" girls have become "EMO" but without the emotional issues.

I can't wait to impress him with my newfound knowledge when he gets home from school! LOL

My son and his friends consider themselves somewhat EMO, only they're happy. :) People tell him he is kind of a mix of emo, skater, and prep. :confused3

Oh, and his favorite bands are Franz Ferdinand, The Killers, Pillar (Christian), Gorillaz, and Blink 182. I'm trying to get him interested in the Jesus and Mary Chain, but it's not happening.

Interesting, because I wouldn't think of Franz Ferdinand as Emo... more of a new-alt crunk band. (I've only seen them once, some absolute moron had the brainstorm to put them in front of 7000 KoRn fans. You can imagine the outcome.)

The Killers are DEFINITELY not Emo. I just reviewed their new CD and use dthe following to describe it: "With slick production and capable musicianship oozing through, Sam’s Town has a decidedly retro feel... A throwback
to the 1980s sounds of David Bowie and Duran Duran..."

Gorillaz are another I wouldn't call Emo, they are almost in a category of their own, I would be hard pressed to categorize them. But not Emo.

Blink, yeah, I'd possibly put them into a quasi-emo gene pool.

Oooh, Jesus and Mary Chain :thumbsup2

Gotta go break out the cassettes! :cool1:

How ironic you posted this today. I just learned about EMO's last night at the dinner table. We were discussing that term of white kids acting like black rappers and EMO came up. I was stumped. The kids were suprised I didn't know it. Guess I'm hipper that I thought (although I was told 'hip" was so out). Anyway, they described it to me as the depressed cutter kids but not to be confused with goth.
It's nice that I can have such conversations with my 14 and 16 year old boys.

My son is in an Emo band, which writes its own stuff, and no one would describe him or the kids he hangs around with as sad. His band consists of two college freshmen and two high school students. Both high school students are honor students who play sports and are on the student council. His GF, who is gorgeous, works in the school system after-school program, sings in advanced chorus, is a good student and buys most of her clothes at American Eagle. My DS's hair is long, but it's very, very blond and he would never dye it black. He's having a better first semester of college than his older brother, who had a major academic scholarship.

DS and his GF went to see Panic! at the Disco last weekend and thought they were great. His favorite band is He is Legend. He rode Everest with Fall Out Boy on grad night but says he doesn't really care for their music.

As far as dress goes, DS wears all colors of T-shirts, has about 20 pairs of shoes and just bought a jacket at American Eagle. I do think his jeans, which came from the male section of Hot Topic, are too tight, though.

Well, I'm a 45yo business owner, mom, wife, etc and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, My chemical Romance! I think they are producing the newest/freshest sound in the last 20 years. If you haven't seen it, check out their video on You Tube of Welcome to the Black Parade. Intense, moving, amazing! My DD12 and DH47 also love them.
