We have 2 laptops and a desktop and although I have paid for all of them none of them are mine. The kids have a laptop and a desktop and the wife has the other laptop. Go figure.

That will be changing quickly!!! I can't believe the 10 yr old doesn't need it for school work more often than that? But don't worry very soon She will need it everyday and then for hours everyday.

Last year when my daughter was in 5th grade they had to do power point presentations and save them on memory sticks and present them in school a few times- thats when she got her own laptop!

We have four computers for four people (we each essentially have our own), but for various reasons we do share them on occasion.

Wait until your oldest starts middle school. She will need the computer for school more and more. I have on in MS and one in HS....all of their books are on-line. My HS'er doesn't even have "real" books...all on-line. They use the computer for homework every single night.
I don't even know what you all mean by "middle school". We have elementary school and high school.

She is 10 and in 4th grade. She does nothing for school on the computer other than stuff while in school.

In many parts of the United States, "middle school" refers to 5th through 8th, or 6th through 9th, grades. Often, "middle school" is in a separate building from the elementary school and the high school.

When I was growing up, and where I grew up, it was called Junior High School.

We have 2...one that I primarily use and one that DH primarily uses because he has all of his work related stuff on it.

However, I have been known to use his and he mine if it happened to be the closest one.

Our elementary school is K-5th
Middle school is 6-8th
High School is 9-12

We currently have 3 people living at home (oldest 2 are at college with their own laptops) and we have 3 pcs, 2 laptops and 2 ipads. One pc and one laptop are so old they rarely get used. DD8 is usually on the newest pc and DH and I mostly use our ipads and no, we don't share! We have our own apps, music, etc. and are very territorial with them, lol.

We have a middle school set up here too. When our kids were in 5th grade, though, that was part of the middle school set-up. Middle schools here have classes like you see in high school where they move from room to room each hour. It used to be a "junior high" set up where the elementary schools would be K-6, junior high would be 7-9 and high school 10-12 but developmentally the middle school style is a better program for kids.

Our kids started needing to type papers, etc. in 4th grade. By 5th grade they usually had at least one two page paper due each week for one class or another. It's nothing for them to put out a 2 page paper every day now in high school. I remember back when we used typewriters and what a chore a two page typed paper was :lmao:. They also have had keyboarding since kindergarten and type at amazing speeds. I think DD types at about 80 words/ minute.

I have a laptop and a desktop. So does my fiance, and my mom. My grandma also has her own computer. My grandpa will never use a computer regardless. So between the 5 of us, that's 7 computers.

As for the whole middle school/junior high thing. We have a few different kinds around here, depending on the district and the school itself.

At my old elementary, it used to be K-6, but was switching my year to K-5, and my class was the first group of 6th graders to go to MS. But now that same elementary is K-8 but is only one of 2 to be so, the rest are K-5. But, I moved districts in the 4th grade and it was still the same K-6. In a neighboring district, they had school for K-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-12. Weird. All districts I mentioned had 9-12: fresh, soph, jr, sr.
