What state are you in?

MLK day is a school holiday for every school around here.

Columbus Day.....there was a big push to drop it as a school holiday because some considered it politically incorrect......but it was in the teachers contract, and they could never come to an agreement that would allow it to be dropped.


I consider New Years, Washington's Birthday , Cesar Chavez Day, Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas to be holidays that all schools observe. Hit and miss holidays in the schools, MLK day usually is...... Lincolns birthday but here some school districts move it to the day after President's Day and tack on 3 non-instruction days to take the whole week off........Good Friday......and Day after Thanksgiving.

Our school district has President's day off (same day as Wash. bd), does not have Cesar Chavez day off and certainly not Good Friday as that is a religious holiday and as a public school, we don't recognize religious holidays.

We have veterans day off and a full week for Thanksgiving, the Monday and Tuesday are teacher exchange days for fall conferences, Wed-Fri holidays.

It's not a holiday where I work.
It's not a regular/scheduled holiday at DH's work, but they do allow their veterans to take the day off if they wish. He has never taken the day, but he knows others who have.

What and when is Ceasr Chavez day? Never heard of that one, much less known anyone to get it off.

Mondays are our busiest days because orders come in all weekend. But since the USPS won't be picking up we'll make it a 3 day weekend.

Our schools and some businesses are closed, and we also have a really nice veterans day parade that lots of the kids and local groups participate in. It is cool to see 100+ entries all dedicated to honoring veterans

Cesar Chavez day is an "optional" holiday in Colorado. I don't know any school or business that closes for it.

It is such a "non" holiday in this state that I had to look it up to see what it was and to verify that it actually is a state holiday. It is, but as said, it is an optional holiday. And the majority do not observe it here. However, we always have spring break at the end of March, so it usually falls within a spring break day off anyway.

It is not covered or mentioned in our district's curriculum.

Thanks to everyone who has responded so far. This has been quite educational, the differences across the nation are interesting.

Does remind me too of when my kids were in school, seems like after every "holiday" that the school did not take, there were a few startled parents in the office who had kept their kids home, having to write excuse notes and gather missed school work for their kids.

All the districts in our area take Spring break last week in March/first week in April. Unless Good Friday falls within spring break, you don't get it off.

Our districts here take 2 weeks off between the last week of December and first week of January.

It is winter break though, not Christmas break.

As for DPS taking Cesar Chavez day off, it is part of their spring break. I worked in a predominantly Hispanic school and the day was still irrelevant, not even being mentioned.

I don't know why you continue to argue with people who actually live in their states and know what is going on. Bored today?

. No, just occupational hazard. We have to confirm information from 2 sources before we go on the air with it. So when folks say one thing, and their school district websites say something else, it raises a red flag. But not uncommon, as I noted, when my kids were in school, there were always a few people who didn't know what holidays school did and didn't take off.

Cesar Chavez day is optional in California as well. I live in North Eastern California and work for a Community College. Our community take Veterans Day off. We have a very small Latino population - we do not take Cesar Chavez day. I get 17 holidays per year.

It's Remembrance Day up here in Canada and as far as I can tell, government, banks and schools are closed on Monday but other small businesses have chosen to close. Our company has chosen to stay open but since DS is off school and his out of school care is closed, I am taking the day off. one of the perks of owning the company I guess.

It varies province to province whether or not there is school, I grew up in Ontario and we were never off school on Nov 11 but here in BC they are. Caused no end to headaches this week trying to figure out whether or not we should close!

You go to the school websites of posters to check their calendars? Maybe I misunderstood what you meant.

Our schools are out on Monday. After Tuesday comes two weeks of early release until Thanksgiving. They used to just be off a week. Now it's almost two weeks of having them home at 11.

I checked Los Rios Community college district, which is the district I live in.
They don't take Cesar Chavez Day, however they take Lincoln's birthday off, which not only isn't a State holiday, it isn't even a Federal holiday. Go figure.

Most said their schools or schools in their area or schools in their district. Not sure why you felt the need to confirm or dispute such a thing.
