Do you have to wait at the red light as described in this post?

Do you have a local news station that takes traffic questions? We have one. People call in situations like this. The news station takes the questions to FDOT. Sometimes, nothing happens, but there have been situations where FDOT has taken action to rectify the situation.

The bridge closure has already been the focus of several of Metro Atlanta's TV news shows.

The temporary traffic lights (never knew they had lights on a trailer they could just roll in and set up) setup on the detour route have totally destroyed traffic. What was a 5 minute trip is now a 45 minute trip at the wrong time of day.

There has been little focus on this one part of the detour but it was mentioned.

The GADOTs response was to be patient and kind.

7 months, well I guess we are down to 6 and a half at this point.

There is such a thing as turn right on a red light, but there is NO such thing about turn left on a red light/restricted movement. Turn left ONLY when you are signalled to do so!!!!

Left turns are more dangerous, that's why UPS always turns Right.

Actually it is legal to turn left on red when going from a one way street to another one way street in PA.

Yeah, our local newspaper has "The Road Warrior".

A similar situation occurred near me some years back. After about a week, the DOT changed the light to flashing red for both directions for the duration of the project. Come to a stop, then proceed if safe.

It is going to be a long 7 months.

My wife stopped at the light last night and the person behind her blew their horn the entire time the light was red.

I just don't understand why they don't turn off the light, cover it with a trash bag, and treat it like the 90 degree bend in the road it will be for the next 7 months

Or call the in charge of the department and tell them you'd like it changed to blinking red given the circumstances. That way, it's stop, look, and go.

I sat there until it turned green but wondered the whole time if i needed to.
Yes, you do. You don't know if someone headed from your left is going to decide to go straight (in spite of the closure), or if there's construction traffic coming the other way.

If someone goes straight, it won’t be far. The bridge has been mostly removed.

In Texas, a left turn between two one-way streets is handled just like a right turn at a red light, which basically means you can treat the light like a stop sign. So yes, I'd stop at the light and then proceed if it were clear

But this isn't two one way streets. It's two two ways.

I know you can turn left from a two way onto a one way on a red in the state of Oregon as long as you have made a complete stop and looked for oncoming traffic. Seems crazy to me, but I've double checked it. There is only one place in my parent's town where I will do that and even then I'm uncomfortable doing so. I don't want to form a habit because I'd be in trouble anywhere else I drive.

I think the question here is does the area still consider this a 2-way street with the one side closed to normal traffic or does the area consider it a 1-way.

I would abide by normal traffic laws unless I knew the area was being treated as a 1-way street (as it's been advised that is ok for the OP's particular state).

If it's not being treated as a 1-way street then I would say a push for traffic signal adjustments is warranted. Doesn't mean it would happen as there could be reasons they don't want to but that there should be a push for it. If nothing happened I would still wait for the light IMO.

I am a rule follower. A red light means stop. It doesn't mean it's up to interpretation at every interesection. The person can honk all they want behind me put it won't make a difference. I will stop until it changes.

The honking is so darn obnoxious though isn't it?

We have red light cameras at many intersections in NY and if you don't fully stop before turning on red, you'll get a ticket that costs just as much as one for completely running straight through a red light. There is one light that notoriously tickets red light turners no matter how long you wait before turning, so many people (including me) don't chance it.

There are some people that pull up behind you and lay on that horn and don't let up. I'm with you though- I don't want to pay the ticket, so I just sit there and wait for green.

I was in an accident due to a horn blower. Bless this little old lady. She stopped at a stop sign and was waiting for a clear opportunity to cross traffic, straight across. The person behind her was impatient and was honking the horn. She got nervous and pulled out and I hit her. The responding police officer was so sweet to her and told her to just ignore a honking horn next time and proceed when it was safe. I will never forget his compassion.

Unfortunately, those sort of aggressive drivers are likely the cause of many of the accidents that officer responds to each day. When I see those drivers on the road, weaving in and out of traffic, honking at everyone, and trying to push people out of the way with their car my first thought is always "they're going to cause an accident".

Is there a cross walk at this light? And/or bike lanes nearby? Maybe the light is still running to allow pedestrians a safe way to cross over to then take sidewalks on the other side of the road to get to their destinations? Traffic patterns are about more than motor vehicles.

In any event, I agree with most that if the light is running, you have to stop and remain stopped when it is red.
