We probably do need new toilets. I think the builder put in the cheapest ones that he could find. There are 4 of us and have never had this issue with any other toilets, ever. To the other comments about us eating McDonalds and pooping bricks, come on. That is just a jerk thing to say. The toilets are the obvious issue.

That probably is it... but it is just like anything else, if you buy the cheapest possible option you're probably not going to get optimal function. And yeah, as with a lot of things, builder-grade toilets are crap (pun intended) because they go with those cheap options. My husband made a lot of money during the housing boom replacing almost-new but barely-working toilets in new subdivisions.

I wonder if anyone really had to flush 15 times. Where does he get his statistics?

We have pressure assist toilets that use little water but work very efficiently. You would be familiar with them if you have stayed at any moderate or value Disney hotel. In fact, we got the same ones they initially installed at Port Orleans when it opened and they have worked great. I would like to replace one with a gravity toilet though as the pressure assist toilets don’t work if there’s no water, so I get nervous during hurricane season.

We don’t have great water pressure in our neighborhood, so all our faucets and showers have low flow fixtures.

Those things scare me. I'd hate to be sitting there if one ever decided it was time to blow up.

Our City Water comes from a well. No problems other than mineral deposits.

We installed new, water saving toilets with our remodel 3 years ago. My DH did all kinds os research and found a video of a new toilet that was able to flush 20 hot dogs with one flush. That was it - we were on the trail of the hot dog flushers!

Installed them and they are fantastic. My boys have never clogged them - and that is a Christmas miracle.

Hot dogs don’t stick to the bowl/trap though. The magic solution was to find a testing solution that was close enough to the real thing without the obvious gross factor.

Not for us. We have a drilled well and get tons of water. Our toilets are all the newer kind that don't take a lot of water to flush.

I’ve been on the road for a few days, and we’re staying at various hotels and motels. So far all of them have older toilets, even the rooms that have been updated with the latest amenities. They certainly use a lot of water, but it seems like it swirls around with less force than my 1.28 gpf toilets, and I’ve even needed to flush two or three times because TP or other solids just float at the top without being drawn into the trap.

A good design overcomes efficiency limitations.
