Do you HATE cats!?!?

I don't hate cats (and I'm fascinated by them for the most part - the agility and craziness and stuff) but I don't get any kind of 'bond' with them that I do with dogs.

Of course, I've never had a cat as a pet, so that's probably part of the reason. I'm sure I'd feel differently if I had my own cat.

My BF feels pretty much the same, but he doesn't seem to be able to discpline a dog (I think he's a bit nervous - and they don't listen to him!).

Don't understand what the point of this thread was though. Anyone who's been around here for a while knows that many many posters here have cats and would get defensive.
Reminds me very much of a post on the Resorts Board last year entitled 'Who else finds the value resorts completely unnappealing?', and started with the line 'I know I know...MANY of you simply love those resorts, so this thread isn't for you (I can just see the angry throngs rushing to post in "defense" of these resorts).' - much like this thread does. Of course, many people did rush in and got extremely annoyed - much like this thread (from what I can gather - haven't read it all!).

The only thing I hate is HATE...

I didn't like cats until I was 21 and my Dad brought one into my house. I never understood the appeal.

Once you have one that loves you, you will never dislike them again. They love unconditionally, and like some people they direct that love almost completely on that person. If you are not that person there is no way to understand.

BTW I love dogs and children, too... you don't have to divide love, you multiply it.

I am another one who thinks that people who don't like animals can't be trusted.

because someone doesn't like animals means they can't be trusted??????? :confused3 :confused3 why can't they be trusted? i don't understand that statement. the statement "people who don't like animals can't be trusted" is an offensive statement imho & lumps all non animal lovers together suggesting they would harm animals, again imho. kind of like someone stated that all cats homes are stinky, furry and so on (again a generalization lumping all cat lovers together). :sad2: :sad2: :sad2:

Not a hater, but not overly found of them....(don't tell my cat that...she thinks I like her!)

I'll vote straight "no I don't like cats."

I had one that peed all over my house. We were nice and generous for many years, but I never want a cat again.

You are right it could have been a thread about Do you hate the Yankees.......Do you hate George Bush instead of Do you hate cats......and yes each and every one of them would have brought people out from both sides, but then she (or he) had to reinerate the statement by saying that people who have cats live in DIRTY, SMELLY and HAIRY households, that kinda generalizes that people who live with pets, especially cats are pigs and yes that does rub me the wrong way........Sorry I am so insensative, but I will take my pets anyday over a lot of people and I am another one who thinks that people who don't like animals can't be trusted. I guess the saying is "if you don't like cats you must have been a rat in a previous life!"

I like big cats at the zoo if that makes you feel any better. I think lions, tigers, panthers etc. are amazing animals. The Lion King is also my favorite Disney movie too. Yes I did generalize. GENERALLY (as in not in all cases) cats shed much hair and it gets over many things, and generally litter boxes smell and can easily stink up a room or portion of the house. Yes, I also realize dogs shed and poop too. I just don't like household cats is all. And what does not liking animals (in my case cats) have to do with trusting someone? Some people hate snakes, bugs, birds etc. so can they not be trusted either? :)

If you're talking about phobias I think that's very different from what the OP was saying (at least that's how I read it).

A phobia is a fear, not a hate.

I'm phobic of spiders, but they still kind of fascinate me. And I don't hate them, I just don't want them anywhere near me.

I hate liver and onions. My mother made me sit and look at a plate of liver and onions for four hours when I was a child because I refused to take just one bite. If the OP had asked "Who here hates liver and onions?!?!" there would have been people offering a passionate defense of the merits of liver and onions as an entree versus those of us who think it is just vile. But (I know I risk being accused of taking this too seriously ;) ) claiming to hate animals (especially companion animals) is different. I believe the best measure of our humanity is how we treat other people as well as how humane we are to animals. I don't think that anyone here on the Disboards is planning to kick a cat or set one on fire or drown a bag full of kittens in a creek, but unfortunately that is the type of behavior I imagine when I hear the word hate used when talking about cats. Cats have taken a lot of abuse because of superstition and hate throughout history. There are still millions of companion animals who could use homes. So as I step off my soap box, I will have to say... No, I don't hate cats. But man, do I hate liver and onions!

I love my 3 "babies", but DH can't stand them. He'd love this thread! :rotfl: Thankfully, he loves me so he puts up with them.

Shedding annoys the crap out of me too, and so I got one of those undercoat combs and that does the trick. You can get them at Wal-Mart in the pet section, but they are with the dog stuff. Works the same. The first time I used it, I got half a grocery bag of hair off of them!

I love my baby kittys. They are no more hairy, smelly, or annoying then the family who lives across the street from me. And also I must put in that my new kitten just jumped up on my lap to take a nap and is purring :teeth: :cat:

:rotfl2: I think we've all had one of those at one time or another!

I don't hate cats at all- actually I wish I wasn't allergic so I could have one. I just wanted to say that I had an Aunt (she died in April) who was scared of cats like other people are scared of snakes (ME!) or mice and rats. I found it totally bizarre..... but they scared the heck out of her. :confused3

I don't really understand your comment (I did not pick Thomas O'Malley as a screen name), but The Fox and the Hound is a movie that had a very special meaning for me about friendship. I don't see how that should imply I'm a cat lover.

I'm sorry you misunderstood my post. As mushymusy nicely pointed out, I was not saying anything negative at all to or about you. That's why I used the smilies, and Winky in particular.

I also like The Fox and the Hound, and was just saying that your user name automatically implies that you love doggies :dog:. I've noticed it before because it's a great userID for someone who loves that movie and dogs :thumbsup2.

I didn't say anything about your being a cat lover, though. I put the dog and cat smilies at the end of the post to suggest that we should just all get along, and not HATE any of the animals. That's what it sounded like you were saying originally, and I was basically agreeing with you. Here's my original post:

I'm sorry that you got confused.

There are way too many people generalizing on this thread IMO. It's like saying that all who post pointless threads are trolls or all of those who have dogs have stinky yards. I don't think that any of those are necessarily true.

By the way, there are plenty of dogs that shed like crazy too. All of these critters just need to be brushed and no more problems. Well, at least not that many. ;)

I for one LOVE cats and much prefer them to dogs. But I don't hate any animals as a matter of fact I am an animal lover. I will have to admit that I really don't care too much for dogs but I have a dog. She is 13 years old and I kind of got "stuck" with her when my sister and her dh decided they wanted to bread their chow chow's - well we got rid of 5 of the 7 puppies and so I took one and my sister kept one. I already had one cat. Now I will admit that cat was a "dirty" cat he constantly cleaned himself and was always dirty and was a huge flea magnet. He died last August at 2 months shy of 14. Meanwhile I end up taking care of my dog's sister (the one my sister was keeping) and their father (also my sister's dog) About 8 years ago I got another cat (as a kitten) and also a no tailed kitten from my mom in NC. Well things ended tragically when the cat from NC got outside where the dogs stayed and they killed him. I really wanted to hate them and I really don't care for dogs but I still took care of them because I couldn't hate them. I got really attached to the kitten I first got 8 years ago and he is even human like - he is my big fur belly - his name is Shanghi. I eventually got another no tailed kitten and she was my Shanghi's best friend but she tragically died in March from a seziure at only 5 years old. As far as the dogs the father dog died a few years ago and the sister dog died last year so I brought my dog in the house (they all stayed outside before) now I am "stuck" with my semi-blind, crippled, stinky, shedding, peeing on the floor 13 year old dog (who by the way stinks way more and is more of a hassle than my 3 cats ever were!!) and I have my Shanghi.

I've decided that I'd actually like to get a cat (not right now, when my BF and I move in together!). He was a little horrified a first. Then he kind of agreed. I pointed out that neither of us have ever owned a cat and that's probably why we don't feel as 'connected' with them.

I want dogs and a cat. I'm going to be looking into it a lot more though before I get one, and spend some time around cats (to adapt a little) before making a final decision.

I have nine cats and three dogs. Actually, I have all hardwood/ceramic floors, and I vacuum frequently. My dogs are much worse shedders than the cats. The dogs, furthermore, won't sit still to be groomed like my cats do, who really enjoy the attention. I am still cleaning dog hair out of my car from a long-haired border collie who died six years ago. It's not that I don't clean out the car--I do. It's that dog hair is pernicious. I know it's not cat hair--it is too long and coarse. Cat hair is hard to clean, too, but my cats don't throw their fur like porcupine quills over the furniture like dogs do. Dogs in general smell much worse than cats, even though dogs are bathed regularly. I can smell a doggy odor when I enter a house, but rarely can smell cats themselves, unless the litter box is untidy.

I love cats. I wish we could have one. I had a siamese that I had to give to my mother years ago because two of my kids were asthmatic. We could visit him. Cats are dignified, aloof creatures if they want to be but can be very dog like as well.

:lmao:
I have had many cats over my life. Now I have 2 dogs. There is just no comparison....
Dogs are gross, destructive, hairy, slobbering, beasts...and they really SMELL. (At least mine are )
Not too mention they are so much more WORK, they need 100% of your attention, they BARK, they need to be walked and seem to have to go to the VET all the time.
(At least Butter's does..he is a mess.:sad2:)

Now I love my dogs...but I like all animals, includes spiders and snakes. I catch the Wolf spiders alive in the house and set them free.:rotfl:
Although cockroaches and mice must die...:scared1:
