Do you guys think this is gross?

I can't stop thinking about something that happened on a trip last year.

I was in the concierge lounge and a housekeeping manager came in to ask one of the CM's if she wanted to clean rooms. She said sure and they continued the conversation to include where.

It didn't seem to bother the manager that she was talking kind of loudly about how slow they were and that they were gonna leave some of the rooms uncleaned (people were checked out) because they were short on staff.

It seemed like the idea was to leave them go for several days. I don't know why this bothered me I know they would eventually have been disinfected for the next guest but it just did.

I think I might have a germ phobia too much purell for me

It should bother you, also if I was paying that kind of money for a room, I'd make sure at least mine got clean, but paying that money and getting a dirty room when you returned from the parks would pretty much turn me off to concierge forever.

No I don't think it is gross.

Where the rooms not cleaned after someone checked out and they were going to wait several days? It couldn't get any dirtier if someone wasn't in the room.

I am sorry, they were checked out.

I try to forget about it but everytime I think about a future stay somewhere I think about it. All those germs growing and growing LOL

I still think the hotel rooms (even the ones not cleaned for days) can be cleaner then the average persons house

I know in my house I don't do all that cleaning everyday. I figure if the germs haven't gotten me yet I am not going to worry about it.

Isn't that the truth!

Safetymom, they keep telling us that we need contact with some germs. Antibiotics won't work etc. I just can't help myself, I am a sanitizing nut!!

There is definitely some truth behind the story that we need contact with germs. Think about all the anti-bacterial stuff we use these days. Unfortunately, what we are doing is killing off both the good and bad bacteria, and then we start getting drug-resistant bacteria. So, actually a little bacteria is good for all of us.

My parents ran a resort for 25 years, and there were many times we had to leave cottages uncleaned due to staff shortage. The first priority was to make sure current guests got their clean towels, then make sure that the cottages were clean for those checking in that day, and then clean what we could for future check-ins. This happened often during the summer when we were busy. The room wasn't going to get any dirtier, and usually the housekeepers would go in and get the wet/dirty towels so they could be washed. This made sure there wasn't anything else that needed attention before they got back to clean, like an overflowing toilet or something.

Did you thoroughly clean your house and change all the sheets before you left for vacation? You left it unclean for a week or more?

That's really all the housekeeping staff was talking about. They let a few rooms go today that wouldn't be needed so that they could get the occuppied and check-in rooms done in a timely fashion. The next day they'd pick up the slack.

I do think that maybe housekeeping discussions could be held somewhere besides the lounge where folks are eating. Who knows what else they could have discussed that might have really set the germ-o-meter to tilt?

As long as wet towels and dirty food/garbage were out I would say fine.

But to discuss in front of other guests? Now that is gross. That is the stuff the customer is NOT supposed to hear about.

Yep, I clean the house before I leave the DH thinks I am nuts!

I guess more than anything I felt like you all and thought it was an odd place to be having that discussion. It was VERY slow and I could definately see the reason for letting the rooms go, BUT I still think about it.

My MIL cleaned our old house from top to bottom as we were moving out!
I just wouldnt have time to clean before we left on vacation. I change our bedding when we return, and make sure the bathroom and kitchen is clean, and floors swept and vacuumed as normal and thats about it. As per my tag - I need a housekeeper!!!

Don't feel bad LvsTnk cause I wash our sheets, clean bathrooms, vacuum, dust and anything else I can come up with before we leave too. Just can't stand coming home to anything dirty. I don't really worry about germs so much though - the clutter/mess just get to me (why did I have 2 boys????)

As a nurse I prioritize on the job everyday. No it wouldn't/doesn't bother me that an empty room may set. It is more important that the rooms with guests get done properly.

I do think a conversation like this should never take place "on stage".

We read the stateroom list on a Disney Magic cruise, and it had codes for vacant rooms that were dirty. Hotels have limited time and help to get rooms cleaned. It is standard in the industry to leave a late checkout room dirty if there is not an anticipated need for that room. That room would then be one of the first rooms cleaned the next day.
