Do you ever dream about moving?

I did - DH, the kids and I put our house in Chicago on the market with plans to move to Orlando. We went down in August, 2003 (in between Hurricanes Charlie and Frances) hoping to find a nice house in a decent neighborhood and a good ped-GI for our daughter and came up empty-handed. Since then we've been to Charlotte, NC and Rock Hill, SC hoping that they might be our "dream" place, but decided that we are better off in Chicago, all things considered. I really HATE the winters here, but this past winter was pretty mild. I'm hoping that it will be a trend and, before we know it, Chicago winters will be as mild as Orlando winters ;). We still vacation in Orlando 2-3x a year, and I still sometimes look up homes near Olrando on realtor.com, but we are staying put for now. Many things would have to "fall into place" before we'd consider actually moving there again.

I did it when I was 20. From Australia to the UK.

I was bored with life and decided about 4 weeks before I left to just do it.

It was very scary to do. After all its a 10 000 miles to "run home to mummy". I would never do it again by myself. But I am loving every minute since I have been here (almost 4 years). So much so I am applying for citizenship in the next few weeks.

I mean, just picking everything up and MOVING far away from where you are. No family, no friends just a totally fresh start. I am at the point in my life where the Maine weather just makes me dread about 6 months of the year. I would love to move to a warmer climate- my dh would NEVER leave Maine though. I dream about it- look up homes online- jobs even.

Every day :wave2: We'll probably sit tight for another 5yrs, until DD12 gets out of HS.

Now we are at a time when retirement is looming, DHs health is gradually failing and we need to make some life-style changes while we can. We have talked about several places and we are planning a long road trip for next summer. After we get done, we'll make some decisions about our retirment home.

DH & I moved 400 miles away from his crazy family to Georgia right after we got married and it's been wedded bliss ever since--best decision we ever made! We will NOT be returning to Florida :sunny:

Look at the suburbs of Atlanta. We have two of the best children's hospitals in the country with more pediatric specialists than you can shake a stick at. Schools are decent. Plus the climate is good, not too cold, not too hot. The traffic sucks, but you get used to it. the best part-- less than 8hrs to Disney World. :car:

Yes, but I just dream of moving closer to the beach in Florida. :sunny:

tinaluis: there's much more to Florida than Orlando! There are many places much more beautiful & affordable, especially if you head north a bit. The Jacksonville area has gorgeous beaches (Fernandina, St Augustine, etc.), reasonable real estate, and is within 2-3 hours of WDW. The Mayo Clinic is in Jax and yor daughter would have easy access to a peds GI specialist.

I would love to move to NC. My company has an office in Charlotte and I watch our internal postings constantly. My immediate family (except for my Dad) is here in Michigan so it would be a tough decision if that job posted, but gosh... I'm soooo done with having leaves on the trees for only 4-5 months each year.

Now I just have to find a nice DISguy that lives there or will be willing to move too! :cloud9:

Susan - what do you do for a living? My company has offices in Tampa.... what made you decide to move? I'm soooo jealous!

We have for a long time...cold winters, yuk! About 3 mos ago DH got totally sick of his job, said he couldn't stand another 13 yrs there til retirement (he's only 40 now, that would make 20 yrs there) so he put his resume on-line at several websites, many recruiters and companies called him, but one stood out the first week.
Just a 2 weeks ago he went to NC for the interview and got the job. Our house is being painted this week, on the market by weeks end, and DH will be in NC to start work Aug 7! We all go down in 3 weeks to visit my parents in SC and then to drive to NC and look for houses! We'll be able to pay off all our debt plus this house, put a big downpayment on a new house AND have money in the bank!

Best of all, we'll be able to DRIVE to WDW for vacation!

We would love to move to NC but DH is a teacher. NC schools don't pay as well plus it is hard to walk away from him geeting full benefits at age 55.

Like others here, I do all the time. But I'm just the opposite of everyone else weather wise-it's too hot here. Whenever we go to WDW, it's actually cooler (or I guess you'd say "less hot" in the summertime) there. Once I was in the BCV Marketplace, and said to the CM, "I'm probably the only tourist coming here to cool down". It turned out she was from the same city as me, and she agreed. Although I don't want to go back to the cold winters of Massachusetts or where DH's from, Chicago, I'd love to see some seasons again. Only a few more years til DH retires, then we're outta here!

My wife and I did it twice. Very happy we did it, but we've found "home" and plan never to move again.

We were both born, raised and married in Philadelphia. We've no close family beyond the Philly suburbs. Starting about a year before my wife graduated medical school she had to start planning where she hoped to do her three-year residency. She got to rank a list of options, and hospitals also rank their list of options (that is, people), and the best matches win. We decided to explore the country beyond Philly. We had a great 6 months touring every major region in the country while she interviewed at residency programs. Based solely on the quality of the residency programs (with strong preference for those outside the Philly area), her/our top ranked place was Cleveland, followed by Chicago, Tucson, San Antonio, and the list goes on. We got our first choice! We moved to a Cleveland suburb and lived there very happily for three years. She had a job lined up, obviously, but we didn't know a soul there. We loved the Cleveland area, made some life-long friends, and look back at those three years with incredible fondness.

Two years into her three-year commitment, we looked at our future options. Alaska for a coupla years? An Indian reservation in New Mexico? We decided that at the end of her three-year commitment we'd have been married seven years and would be having kids and it'd be nice if the kids could know their relatives, so we decided to move back East, but not back to Philly.

We decided on one of several small beach towns near Atlantic City. We LOVE the beach, and liked the idea of being 90-120 minutes away from family. So when we moved here 8 years ago, we didn't know a soul, again. Now we have 2 great kids who aren't total strangers to their grandparents and cousins, and plus we have some great friends here.

Two moves to "alien" places where we didn't know anyone, two success stories.

It's an adventure. GO FOR IT.

Yep.........about a year ago I felt like I was going to bust if I did not do something exciting.......I planned, searched.........etc. then reality kicked in.
My husband is on disability and brings home piddily squat money and I have 9 years history with the state(employment).....I have to stay to get any kind of retirement. Maybe when I am 65 (15 years from now) I will move. :confused3

I would love to move to Colorado to be closer to my DSis and the much better weather. DH would like to move to New Zealand! We are here for now but life is an adventure and if the opportuniy arises, I think we would go.

We often dream of moving! DH would like to move to southern Missouri so he can fish at Table Rock Lake every day! Not my idea of fun!! :teeth: I love a place with history!! I would love to move to Savannah GA!!
We've up and moved before, I think we will do it again!! :teeth:

And here I thought I was the only one who felt this way. Glad to know I am not. I absolutly hate it here. There is nothing for my kids. The school system is awful. My job is the worst. Matter of fact in 2 months I think I am going to quit. Don't know how we will survive till I find something else, but we will manage I guess. My DH loves it here. I have told him as soon as the kids are grown, I will be packing up and going. He tells me Go On!! I hope by then he changes his mind and comes along. Even my kids have begged him to move somewhere else. So you know it is bad. I would love to move close to the beach or the mountains. I love both. Just anywhere but here!!

I want to move across the country to somewhere like Georgia, NC, TN, KY. I don't know why, I just feel a pull to the south. Besides my only family being here I'm single and in my late 20s, and while that's the norm here and it would be so easy to pack up and move, I know I'd be an "old maid" there and while there are a ton of single guys here most guys my age there are married and it'd be much harder when I want to find someone to date seriously and settle down. So ya, I doubt I'll move there until I get married.

When I was a kid, we lived in Wichita Falls Texas for a year.... maybe that is why I am drawn to the south.

We have friends who picked up and moved to Florida- my dh's friend tells him that he will hire him ANYTIME. Dh will not even THINK about it seriously. "Too hot" in Florida. Baby. :guilty:

UHOH! This post is actually HonestAbe. I didnt realize DW had her login cached!!!

But Colorado sucks. We live in Aurora (burb of Denver) but DW is a native and I have been here most of my life. I'm not saying the weather is bad, but if you arent into outdoor or professional sports you are a social pariah here. But if you decide to move this way and want to be in the Denver area, let us know. We talk ALL The time about moving but like everyone else too much fear of the unknown keeps us here. I keep hearing that California sun calling me and the wife needs to be near the water to snorkle!
