Do you eat food that has been left out?

I assume you are talking about perishables. If a perishable has been out over 2 hours I will not touch it.

I took a food handling class to work in a deli many years ago and the things I learned still weigh in my mind. I fully admit I am anal about food safety but I am fully content being so uptight about it.

I don't waste food because of it..I just put it away before it hits 2 hours..it's really not that hard to do.

Ita! I am always the first one up bundling the food up and putting it away. I actually enjoy left overs as I feel the flavors have time to "marry". However, I had a nasty bout of food poisioning when I was a teen, and I swore then, no food costs so much that I will risk going thru food poisioning again. And while I try to make sure food isput away so the left overs CAN be enjoyed, my personal motto is if in doubt, throw it out.

:thumbsup2 agree!! I am the same way:rolleyes1

I know why the "rules" are, so no need to repost them. I have family members that leave holiday meals out all day so everyone can easily graze through at dinner time. I've seen others eat pizza that sat out all night. Maybe the preservatives, etc in our foods keep them from getting sick?

Do you eat/leave out food for long periods of time and still eat it?

Eating food that is left out too long is a risk. There is no guarantee you'll catch something and get sick from it. Just that the risk is considerably higher. As such, I do not eat food that we leave out too long by accident and we don't leave holiday food out all day.

I'd rather eat something left out on the counter for a week than eat something prepared by a toddler. :scared1: :lmao:

:worship: I still am grossed out by the memory of the Irish potatoes my kids brought home from preschool. "Mommy we made these for you in school." "Try one they are good." I could only imagine all the germs from the kids' hands. I was afraid to even ask if they rolled them on the tables in their classroom.

(me) Thanks honey, I'll have one later with my Irish coffee. ;)

I have no problem eating food that has been sitting around. At holidays we graze all day long. None of us have every became ill from it.

LOL---don't like toddler boogers and whatever else their hands were in??

Somethings you can leave out and eat later, some things you can't. Cheese, for example, tastes miles better at room temperature than refrigerated and won't spoil. (It will grow mold faster at room temp than in a fridge, but if you buy it and eat it within a week, it's not a problem.) Some cooked and preserved meats will stay good for quite a while. Most baked things will stay good a long time. Pizza is fine overnight. It's bread and melted cheese and cooked preserved meats and tomato sauce. Nothing in it will spoil if.

I worked at a pizza place- we made a pizza for a "slice pie" and it sat out until it was gone...some days it was hours and hours and it was fine.

Yes but it would have been under a heat lamp..keeping at the proper temperature. If not they were likely violating health code if they just left it sitting at room temp for hours and hours. (if it was at room temperature..unless you went home with the people that ate it and know they never got sick you can't reasonably say it was "fine" because you don't know that someone didn't get sick from it on one or more occasions).

No heat lamp - no place i ever have been to has a slice pie under heat lamp.

We have always left pizza out overnight and have never had a problem. I do not like cold pizza (like refrigerated), so I've never done it. We've been doing this for years and not once has anyone in my family gotten sick from it.

On the other hand, DH is notorious (and it drives me crazy) for leaving meat out for hours after dinner. When he grills, he doesn't put the meat away after we've eaten. In fact, he'll often not put it away until just before he goes to bed, way after the 2 hours. Drives me crazy, but our agreement is that when he cooks, he cleans up, and on the rare occasions when I cook, I clean up. I'm not doing his job for him, so the meat sits there. Luckily, he usually just grills enough for the 4 of us and maybe an extra burger or hot dog. I don't eat the leftovers nor do I give them to the kids. DH usually eats them. A few times he has developed an upset stomach and can't figure out why. "Must be something I ate." Well, duh, I think I know what it was! But for some reason, he just doesn't make that connection.

I do put the meat away, though, if we have a lot of leftovers. I don't want it to go to waste and I know it will if I wait for DH to put them away.

I was just going to say..I went and got pizza Friday, the place I went to had all kinds of pies out for a slice...no heat lamps

No heat lamps here in the pizza capital of America!!

I do not eat food that has been left out. My gusband thinks I'm crazy but I don't care.

I have never been to a place where it isn't under a heat lamp. Pizza Hut, Peter Piper, CiCi's..etc. Anytime I have been to any pizza place with pizzas out in a buffet type setting (what I assuming you are talking about) the pizza has always been under a heat lamp type thing..not just sitting out at room temp (because frankly how crappy is that..here is your room temp pizza? Even if it isn't a health standard it's good service to offer your customers warm pizza for goodness sake).

the pizza places that i have seen that do not have heat lamps are not buffet style. they are the type where you buy by the slice then they throw it in the oven to reheat.

No-we are talking about real pizza places- not those chain things! At a real pizza place you walk in and order a slice or two--there is a pie made already that they grab how many you want off from and then throw them in the over for a minute or 2 to heat it up.

Ah...that is different from a chain/buffet situation like I was thinking of but I haven't seen a place where they have it pre made and then warm it..of course I likely don't see what they do in the kitchen and don't know about it.

Of course I eat food that's been left out. That's why I have an immune system. What's a little salmonella between friends anyway?

When we get pizza, I will put the leftovers still in the box in the oven. DD or I will usually eat it the next day. I have always done that, never a problem. We do heat it up though.

I know several women that used to cook their nightly meals in the mornings when it was cooler (so as not to heat up the house), cover it and leave it on the stove. Then they just reheated it for supper. These were older ladies that did things a little more "old fashioned" and cooked huge meals each day.

Or others that cooked a huge meal at noon and then just left the leftovers out for everyone to eat for supper that night. Everyone just reheated what they wanted to eat.

Not wanting to start any more phobias about food but I took the ServSafe course for working anywhere that serves food (had to have it for the kitchen in a child care center). The biggest thing that the instructor pointed out was that a lot of food poisoning comes from tea and soft drinks, especially the self serve soft drink things in fast food places, he said that he always asks them to get his drinks from the drive thru drink machine. The tea can come from the tea itself being left out, the soft drinks from the machines not being completely cleaned and from the way people use them.
