Do you drink V-8 juice (or similar)?

I got a lecture from my doctor, I need more vegetables. My problem is a lot of vegetables upset my stomach, as do certain fruits.

Fruits I can eat - melons, blueberries, grapefruit, tomatoes (fruit/veggie/eh), and not much else without an upset stomach.

Vegetables - green beans, spinach - sparingly, and quite frankly I don't like many others!:rotfl:

I've been told to take a daily multi-vitamin with iron, and try to up my vegetable/fruit intake. This isn't a weight loss thing, so I'm not worried about calories, but I don't want to feel sick all the time from eating things that bother my stomach.

anyways, long story short, I have 8 ounces of V-8 juice a day (along with another serving of fruit and green beans with dinner). That's not enough, right? Or yes, yes it is?

Am I taking a shortcut, or does V-8 really have two servings of vegetables in each glass?:rotfl:

Yes, I can ask my doctor, but I want to see what others do. It's way better than I was doing before though....;)

Original V8 = 1 serving of fruit + 1 serving of veggies

This means you're still short of the daily recommendation, but it's a step in the right direction, especially combined with the multi-vitamin.

The thing about v8 is it's pretty high in sodium, so you may feel bloated and start to retain water after drinking it everyday. It's also high in high-fructose corn syrup.

I would ditch the drink and stock up on the veggies you do like, personally. But it's up to you. :)

Ugh, that's disheartening. Every stupid vegetable makes me bloat!:rotfl:

I'll try to eat more vegetables rather than the juice, but I get kind of tired of beans....this blows.:lmao:

thanks for replying!:)

Like the pp said, V8 has mega sodium in it and that is not good for your health.

You should get at least 5 fruit and veg a day and so your regimen is not enough.

Have you really tried EVERY vegetable several times, and they ALL make you feel sick? If so, I would talk to your Dr about that!

Sometimes you have to eat stuff that you don't like just because it is good for you.

Have you tried roasted squash? Adding cheese to brocolli or cauliflower?

Tomato sauce (like pasta sauce) is way healthier than raw tomato (according to Dr Oz) and you can puree all kinds of veg into the sauce and not even taste it.

Good luck! It's hard to get them all in sometimes.

I'll be honest with you, there's no way I'm going to get all 5 servings a day, but I'm trying for 3. (trust me, better than I was doing!)

Yes, I've tried to eat the fruits/vegetables that bother me numerous times, I just can't. I know why it happens, just don't want to get into it on here.:)

But I haven't tried asparagus lately, I can try that I guess. I can do seedless cucumbers, I can work those in somehow.

It's much easier in the summer when melons/berries are cheaper!

Thank you for your advice! I'll try the tomato sauce idea.

What about tomato juice? They do make "low" sodium tomato juice. I love an ice cold tomato juice MIXED with V8. It's good with celery or broccoli on the side.

There are so many different vegetables you can eat without having V-8 (which is not good for you), or multivitimins.

Also if your body is not used to vegetables it can cause an upset stomach. It will also happen if you eat too many!! Your body will get used to it after a few days.

If it is root vegetables that is upsetting you all the time, try for vine vegetables. Or start looking at different hybrid veg.

If you really can not eat vege without it upsetting you - try adding things to it. Does cauliflower cheese make you ill? Is it a mental block? (you think it will make you ill and therefore you get ill). There is no reason why someone gets ill from all veg and I really would be seeing your doc about that.

I just made my kids smoothies with frozen berries - they sell this awesome bag at costco! I buy low sodium v8. I also make a delicious cream of broccoli soup with broth, broccoli, fat free condensed milk, onion, and garlic (boil onions and garlic in 1/4 cup water, add broccoli, puree when cooked, add the milk).

V-8 doesn't have HFCS

I wish I could choke that stuff down.

There is a vitamin drink it's called Vemma it's supposed to be really healthy. I love the idea but when I tried it, ugh I wanted to shave my tongue!

I drink V8 most days because I, too, have trouble eating all those veggies. I like the Spicy version. I eat it really well-chilled and with a bagel, so it cuts the risk of heartburn, and it tastes the least gross possible.

That said, I do know that when you start eating lots of veggies after not eating a lot, your body revolts and gets all yucky bloaty sicky, but after a little while it does adjust. It just ain't easy getting it there!

Well, there is a reason, I guess I can say I have IBS and I can not eat certain vegetables. Doctor does know this, he wants me to eat more of what I can and it's just hard because it's only a few things and who wants that all the time. Green beans from the can don't bother me, broccoli does. I can't help it. If I peel apples I can eat them sometimes, bananas bother me all the time.

I will try asparagus again, I used to eat it, I liked it wrapped in proscuitto!

I do frozen berry smoothies and throw in some spinach, kale or romaine lettuce.
It's a great way to add to some veggies provided it doesn't mess with your stomach.

Good luck.

The regular V8 drinks do not contain HFCS. The V8 Splash drinks do. Low Sodium V8 only has 140mg sodium per serving.

Personally, OP, I think you should invest in a juicer and make your own fruit and vegetable juice blends. You'll be able to use vegetables you normally do not consume, as the juice will be kinder to your stomach.

OP, I feel your pain, although my issue is mainly with fruits and nuts.

While you may/do have IBS, some people have the inability to digest fructose and many fruits and some veggies have a high fructose-to-glucose ratio which causes I problem.

I suspect this is part of my issue. I absolutely cannot eat more than one or two slices of an apple or I am having cramps and IBS. I can eat a bit more of a pear. I can't drink any sort of juices anymore, even orange juice because the fructose is so high. I seem to be safe with any citrus in whole form, mangos, bananas, and melon.

Eating nuts gives me pain and certain types of fiber keep me in the bathroom way too often. The worst part is that I ate all this stuff up until my 30s and then it changed so it wasn't like I wasn't used to the stuff and didn't have it. I've eaten all these things all my life except for the last 10 years.

I love V8 but it's too high in carbs for me anymore. They DO make a low sodium V8 now OP.

Why would original V8 count as a serving of fruit? Are you thinking of V8 Splash, maybe? According to their website, original V8 is 100% vegetable juice (no HFCS) and contains tomatoes, carrots, celery, beets, parsley, lettuce, watercress and spinach, and 8 oz is the equivalent of 2 vegetable servings.

I am a huge veggie lover. There isn't one I won't eat! But, I still do my low sodium V-8 each morning.

While I like the taste of most fruits, they are way too sweet for me to eat more than once every few days. So I get all my nutrition, mainly, from veggies.

I would get yourself a V-8 with breakfast (I have this, a Fage/honey yogurt and a slice of cheddar cheese most mornings), and then have one at lunch with like a turkey sandwich, and sliced cucumbers with some italian dressing or so to dip.

Dinner = have your protein and the veggies (not out of a can...fresh are SO much better!! And better for you.).
