Just curious to see if there is a correlation between those of us that just can't let go of our 50 or 55 fast lens and coming from a film background

Not sure if there's a correlation, but my 50mm f/1.8 is always in my bag and ready to go should I need her. As good as the new zooms are, I sill don't think you can beat the image quality of a good prime.

You really were a question short. Yes I do and I am so old I used them on film and digital!

Well,,,,, I shot film and never used a prime lens on my film bodies. I did have an opportunity about 16 years ago to buy a 50mm f/1.8 as back then it was even cheeper than it is now, but I was stuck on zoom lenses and didn't have the knowledge I have today. So I passed. I actually had some gift certificates for a local photo shop so for my out of pocket expence would have been next to nothing.

Once I went digital and started gaining knowledge from boards like this one I went out and bought the 50mm f/1.8. Now I have a total of 3 prime lenses.

So I guess I would be in another category.

If only I knew then what I know now. :)

I have a 50mm f/1.8 and used to use film but the two have little to do with each other. The 50 was purchased after I went digital, as my low cost, low light lens. It is also good for portraits with it's shallow depth of field.

I keep looking at a 28mm f/1.8 but don't know if I would use it enough to be worthwhile.

I love my primes. The 50mm f1.4 is standard and I absolutely love my 85mm f1.4 too!

"None of the above"... I shot film on my K1000 for many years (and still do) but until I got my DSLR, only had three lenses - two cheapie zooms (35-70mm and 70-210mm) and one prime (Sigma 28mm F2.8, which is probably going up for sale any day now.) Now in the 50/55mm range, I have four of 'em... my usual FA 50mm F1.4, an M 50mm F1.7, an M 50mm F2.0, and an M42-mount Takumar 55mm F1.8. Oh, and a quite nice M42 Vivitar 55mm F2.8 1:1 macro, made by Komine.

The "M"s came in collections bought recently off Craigslist and will also be going up for sale very soon; I just don't need 'em all! And I need to raise money for future lens buys...

Yes, and I shot film.

When I bought my old Minolta X700 I had the 50mm 1.7 that came with the camera and also purchased a long zoom. Within a year or so I added another smaller zoom and used that the majority of the time. Then, in the last 2-3 years of shooting with that camera I placed the 50mm on and hardly ever took it off. After buying my Sony A700 the first extra lens I bought was a 50mm 1.7!

I have one that was my on my dad's old Nikon film camera. Don't know how old it is but I used it on his film camera in the 80's. I don't use it nearly as much as I probably should. It is a little noisy when it focuses- maybe age?

Carry a 50mm? Yes. the 50mm f1.8. Use the 50mm? Hardly ever, but it weighs only a few ounces and takes up almost no room, so I still carry it with me just in case.

started in the digital era but have since bought into film as well own a Takumar 50mm f1.4 an F50mm f1.7 and Takumar 55mm F1.9 use all of them between my digital and film cameras. Still have not decided which of these or the 43mm F1.9 to bring down to disney next month

Yes--started as a film guy, but those are days long gone for me. I carry the 50mm 1.4 now.

Yep, started with film. Still love my old Nikkor 50mm 1.2 (takes a beautiful pic) and use it with my digital D200. Also have a new Nikkor 50mm 1.8 which is great for travel, nice and light weight:)
