Do you bring your own bedding?

Cookingmomma--As for some reason I can't reply to your PM in kind, I will post my thoughts here.

I wasn't trying to be hurtful by saying I felt sorry for you. But I do feel sorry for you. Yes, it is normal (and smart!) to check your room for bedbugs. It is not, however, normal to make your kids hipbump thru the turnstyles so that they don't touch them. It is not normal (and even a little gross) to use your own utensils to get food at the buffets. Who is to know if you have used that ustensil to eat with, besides you? If I saw someone stick their own fork in a serving dish I would demand that that whole dish be replaced. I have no ay of knowing if it has been in your mouth or not.

I feel sorry for you because if your family catches any kind of bug, it is bound to be worse. You have not built up your immune system with normal germs, so it will not know what to do.

I can't imagine living my life being so afraid of germs. It has to be a lot of work, as well as not a healthy way to live. And that is why I said I felt sorry for you. If this somehow offends you, well, I can only say I'm sorry for that too.

Omigawd. NOBODY said, or implied, dumb. It's too bad you inferred that from what you've read here. Overdoing things, sure. But that's got NOTHING to do with anyone's intelligence!!!

Excuse me, honey. I'm not the one-- trust me on that. First of all, my comments were in general and I don't think I specified you or anyone specifically. Furthermore, I just chimed in because yes we're all entitled to our opinions but ,my gosh, I'm sure CookingMama wasn't expecting to be basically insulted when she submitted her post. It's not my place to defend her, and I'm not trying to; but it amazes me the things people will find the nerve to say behind the cover of the internet.

And yes, when someone makes condescending, sarcastic comments as though they are teaching a pre-schooler the basics of the immune system, I find that to be insulting one's intelligence.

I don't bring my own sheets and I just don't even think about it. But I do bring my own pillow case (I have to have a satin pillow case or my hair is crazy in the morning) and a small blanket (fleece 2 yards). We will be driving this time so I will probably even bring my own pillows but I am not going to bring sheets (I would have to buy them anyways since I have a Q-waterbed)

And yes, when someone makes condescending, sarcastic comments as though they are teaching a pre-schooler the basics of the immune system, I find that to be insulting one's intelligence.

And I find the following comment insulting:

For someone to walk barefoot in a hotel room where the floors and carpet have been cleaned God knows when is just plain NASTY--in my opinion. Then again, thats your prerogative.

I walk barefoot in a hotel and even walk (gasp!) outside in bare feet. Since my feet aren't going in my mouth, I'm not too concerned about it. I don't think it's NASTY at all--but I do think this is nasty because your average person will flush with their hand:

Yes, I flush with my foot. Why would I use my hand when I know that so many people(even non-germphobes) have used their foot?

Luckily, I wash my hands after using the bathroom. I'd also like to state for the record that I HATE women who hover. Sit down--no one wants to use that stall after you when you hover. (Not directed to the person I quoted but just a general request!)

No one has insulted your intelligence although many of us think some of the things folks have mentioned doing are over the top. But if that person wants to do those things--have at it. Until it affects me--as in the foot used to flush and using one's own fork to help themselves to all the items on the buffet. Then I get annoyed.

But you do not have any way of knowing who is allergic to what. By serving yourself out of multiple containers using one fork, you are introducing ingredients from the first tray into the second, and ingredients from the second (and possibly the first as well) into the third, and ingredients from the third (and maybe the second, and perhaps traces of the first) into the fourth...

This is true! Shellfish allergies, dairy, egg, peanuts! Some of these things can result in life-threatening anaphylaxic rxns for which people carry emergency meds at all times. This is not right. Since you have the first ADR, the x-contamination is guaranteed from the start.

Why do people use their foot to flush the toilet instead of their hand? Isn't there a sink to wash with after you leave the toilet stall???

Because they are so worried about germs they think its acceptable that everyone else should put up with muck from the floors being on the handles.

I must say I thought I was a germaphobe until I read this post! There's nothing worse than not being able to sleep because of a funky-feeling or smelling pillow or scratchy blanket. If driving, we always bring our own pillows and blanket, but not sheets. So, not just for the germ-factor, but also for the comfort factor. I get the heebie-jeebies from seeing something gross or filthy in hotel rooms, too. There should be a federal law against unclean temporary housing, with strict fines for violation, irregardless of price level.

On a somewhat related note, when getting a rental car, I always wipe down the steering wheel, door handle, radio/climate knobs, etc. Why? How many times have you driven down the road only to see a fellow motorist with their finger almost first or second knuckle deep in their nose? If they didn't have a tissue or handkerchief to do it in the first place, I doubt they're cleaning said finger with one.

Oh, and BTW. Never bring along a black-light to a hotel room...

Regarding the barefeet, notice the words "in my opinion". I'm not telling anyone not to do it, or calling them nasty. I'm stating that I find it to be nasty.

I don't know how it is in your area but around here the general person does not flush the toliet with their hands. You can tell when someone uses their foot to flush the toliet. I'm observant to what goes on around me, and I see it all the time in various places. Not to mention that I work in an office with hundreds of employees and see it day in and day out.

I do agree that hovering is gross because the woman usually ends up making a disgusting mess. Generally, a lot of women do this which leds other women to hover.

By the way, you can get parasites by walking barefooted. But just for the people are that going to point it out--I know that parasites are everywhere and you can pick them up anywhere.

because i dont want to touch a surface that was just touched by your hand on your bottom....thats why.....
and like you said there is a sink to wash after you leave to wash off your hand from my foot.......

I'm a foot flusher. Not because of germs though (I do wash my hands after using the bathroom.) It's just one of those things I've always done. Don't know why I started (back when I was in elementary school probably) but it's just a habit now.

Well that is gross everyone else has to put up with what is on you shoe! How about flushing it with a piece of toilet paper then your skin doesn't touch it and no one else has to put up with floor muck you leave behind. When you over sanitise your room it doesn't affect others using your foot to flush the toilet does and is rude.

I'm not sure about you, but most people are capable of wiping themselves with tissue WITHOUT their hand actually touching their bottom. Additionally, by using your foot you are putting MORE germs on the handle than those located on a human posterior. Isn't that lovely for the person who is going to flush after you? :flower3:

I do feel that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. However, in reference to those that say they travel a lot and frequently encounter bed bugs/fleas....i think you just have bad luck.

My family & I stay in hotels for a cumulative total of about 2 months each year. We have not encountered bed bugs and have stayed in hotels across Canada, the US & Europe. These hotels have ranged from Holiday Inn Express to 5 star.

Like several others on this thread, I do feel sorry for those of you that are afraid of common germs. Our bodies are built with certain natural immunities, but we also need to build up immunities by exposure to germs! If you don't you are seriously damaging your body and exposing yourself to lengthier and more complicated illnesses.

I think the original poster asked if you brought your own bedding. So this thread is getting completely off topic. Also, people can have their own reasons for bringing bedding from home. We are not germaphobes if we choose to do so. Sometimes it is purely for comfort, others suffer allergies and have special hypoallergenic pillows.

Most of the toilets in WDW are the automatic flush toilets so I don't understand how flushing with your foot is relevant. When you use a public bathroom the best thing to do is not think about what the person in there before you did! Use the bathroom wash your hands, our health department recommends that you use paper towels to turn off the water and open the door when you leave.

I think you're confusing me with other people in this thread. I don't oversanitize my room.

I'm sorry but I've been using my foot to flush toilets for at least 15 years now (not because of germs though...I am not afraid of germs.) It's a habit I don't intend to stop. And besides, I'm just one of the many who does it so whether or not I do it or don't do it, isn't going to make much of a difference in the big scheme of things. And I don't think it's affecting you directly since I doubt we're ever at any of the same places. I don't see any reason to get worked up over such a topic. It's just a toilet afterall.

I bring my own pillow (extra firm) since I had a previous neck injury and soft squishy ones just don't work for me. Plus to get a good night sleep I must have my cotton quilt, can't blame that one on any old injury ;)

Or they simply don't know how to identify an actual infestation, or they are carrying it from place to place themselves. For all the media coverage of bed bugs, I find it incredibly difficult to believe that one family has had so many infestations in one year.

In the last 18 months I have been all over India, all over China, all over North America, all over Europe. I have stayed in hotels in America and France where I knew for certain that there were bed bugs. I had some very interesting bugs in my rooms in India and America. Never once did I become infested.

Again, I have no issue with people's personal issues or problems which lead them to oversanitize a guest room, so long as they do not damage the room. However when they bring those issues into public by cross contaminating food, or flushing with their feet, I do feel that they are impacting others in a very negative fashion, and thus we should be able to speak up and defend our rights here or in person.

And I for the record do not 'hide undercover of the internet' - I told the person contaminating the buffet food that if I ever encounter her in a restaurant performing her dangerous habits, I would report her right away.

If we drove to DL/WDW, I'd bring my own pillow for comfort reasons. But since we fly, I don't. I just suffer with the hotel pillows (which tend to be too flat or way too soft.)

I still don't understand the big deal with how people flush the toilet. With a foot or with a hand, either way we're all washing our hands afterwards anyway, right?
