do the plant watering globes really work?

They had a garden guru two different types of plants: a mum and a lilly(I think). They had three of each. The first one wasn't watered at all for 2 weeks. The second was watered by hand and the third was watered by these things.

The garden guru said these water globes did almost as good as hand watering.

2 things they said to watch out for:

A) they are fragile. The box didn't say it, but the instructions said to make sure you poke a hole in the soil first before inserting. The garden guru broke one.

B) They are top heavy so you may need to support them somehow.

I bought a box of 2 of them and I think they are working well. I use them for 2 indoor plants, and they last about 2 - 4 weeks before they need refilling. I agree about the need to be careful with them - they do seem kind of fragile.

Hmmm, maybe I should try them. I kill everything around the house (plant wise). I even killed one of those worms you put into the plant telling you it needs water. Everyone got a kick out of that one...

It isn't as pretty, but some garden centers and Lowe's, Home Depot garden centers sell a device that allows you to use a plastic soda bottle to water. The gadget looks a little like a tent spike and twists onto the neck of the bottle. I've used both the 2 liter and 16oz bottles and they work well. I only use them when we vacation. I have one huge peace lily that I used two 2 liter bottles when we were gone for a 2 week vacation.

OP there was a thread a few weeks ago about people not liking these. I have two however, and really like them. I even have them on my wish list again so I can have them for all my plants. There are several manufactures for them, some make a heavier glass and others are not so sturdy. The ones I have a really heavy, I am not worried about breaking them unless I drop it. The bulb part is also a little larger. I do not know the brand. I have seen some other ones that are a little smaller and seem really fragile.

the homemade one looks good saves money and put an old soda bottle to another use...but do you think that would work good for an outside plant during the summer months??

I have one and it works great when I remember to fill it up. The only problem I have seen is tryign to put water in it, you need a small stream of water.

not realy,especialy outdoors,they empty fast,so they're pointless- indoors, they're not bad- my ds gave them to me as a gift , so I use them, but don't love them,and they're pain to refill

Is there anywhere you can purchase them other than mail order? I know sometimes the "only seen on tv" items show up in various stores including Bed Bath and Beyond.
