Do I understand this.... (Newbie wanting to buy DVC)

Just want to make sure I have this right.... I can buy any DVC Home Resort and any month but can book to any resort and any time?

I am flexible on where we stay and have about a 3-month window that I would visit. But the OKW seems to be a much better deal than the other places, but I would prefer to stay at WLV while the kids are little...... Is the only difference 11-month vs 7-month advance reservation? Is preference given to folks at their Home Resort/Month?

The general feeling here is to purchace where you wish to stay. The 11-month home resort booking advantage can be a big factor in getting the exact dates you want.

You may be flexible on when you can visit, but if everything is booked at the 7-month window you'll be out of luck.

Yes, you can become a member at any DVC resort...either by purchasing directly from Disney or through resale. Use years are not available for every month...I believe there are use years for only eight months of the year.

If you like OKW, then buy a resale - the price is competitive and the maintenance fees at OKW are the lowest at this point and it requires the fewest points to stay. If you like OKW and are ok with staying there if VLW is not available at 7 month window then go with OKW

You're on the right track! If you buy resale at OKW then you could book your vacation there at the 11 month window; then try and book at VWL at the 7 month window. If VWL is not available, you can waitlist to see if it becomes available.
Whatever you do, I think you'll be happy with DVC!

A lot of people have a lot of success with the seven month window, but certain times are significantly tougher. VWL is (apprently) particularly tough around Christmas time (which is anytime in November and December) due to the wonderful theming.

OKW is the easiest resort to book into at seven months. It has the most rooms. Although it also has the most and cheapest GVs - which can be hard to book at seven months.
