Do I need to fax room request?

We are staying at Poly LVC. I submitted my room request and information regarding birthday celebration to the concierge a few months back when they sent me my itinerary. I keep reading tips that it is a good idea to fax the hotel a few days prior to check in with any requests that you may have. Is this a good idea or overkill? Thank you!!

Many of the resorts are ignoring faxes now. You have a better chance of getting your requests if you call central reservations and have your requests added to your reservation.
