Do I need to bring dishwasher detergent?

It's been a while since we stayed in a 1 or 2BR, as it's just my husband and myself, so we usually stay in studios. We were in a 1BR in May for a few days, and for the life of me I can't remember how much dishwasher detergent was provided. Actually I don't think we ever used the dishwasher.

We have a family trip coming up in Jan and will be in a 2BR at VWL for a full week. We plan to eat breakfast in every day. Mostly cereal, but a few days we'll have a full breakfast. I know we'll run the dishwasher a few times with this group during our stay. Do they only provide one load's worth of detergent or do I need to bring some?

Thanks!

Hi
I just came back from a 4-night stay in a 2-bedroom. They left me with 6 individual packs of dishwasher detergent and a small bottle of Palmolive dishwashing liquid. It was more than enough. Just a note-if you want to make eggs or grilled cheese, there is no frying pan. You might want to bring one!
Have fun.

If you run out of dishwater detergent, you can just call housekeeping - they will bring you more. No charge.

Best wishes -

There should be a frying pan - just call housekeeping if it's missing. :D

We brought some dishwasher tablets, as well as tablets for the washing machine and softener sheets. (We hate to travel with powders.)

Thanks for that! I read there wasn't a frying pan and almost had a heart attack. How was I going to make pancakes for dd with no frying pan?! So, there should be one, if not call housekeeping. Thanks.

Here's a list of all of the things in one of the kitchens (courtesy of AllEars.Net). If it's not in the room. Call housekeeping and they will bring it to you.

Thanks everyone. I won't pack extra dishwasher detergent. I do plan to bring a nonstick skillet, as I've heard the one they provide is NOT nonstick. Correct?

We just returned from OKW - all new cookware, ALL non-stick! Must be a recent change - they weren't there in February.

I see that dish drainer is one of the items mentioned in the villa inventory. Is this the same as a UK dish drainer?!! Is it somewhere to stack plates etc to dry them when they have been washed in the sink rather than the dishwasher?

Sorry is this seems like a really dumb question!!

Hi Bexx! That is how I would describe a dish drainer also:D Only thing is, I don't remember seeing one in my 2br ten days ago. It could have been there, I didn't open every cabinet.

HTH,
Lisa:sunny:

Thanks for the confirmation Lisa!

On the list HBC posted above, it says it's on the kitchen counter. If they are supposed to be there, I wouldn't have thought you could miss it!!! Hope they haven't got rid of them - I find them very useful.

The dish drainer in our 2 Bedroom at OKW this June was in the cabinet under the sink.

::yes::
We've stayed at OKW many times, SSR, BCV and VWL. The dish drainer has always been under the sink.
You won't find any ice cube trays at OKW. The freezers there have ice makers (unlike the ones at the other DVCs).
Also, the diswashing soap and dishwasher soap may be in an upper cabinet near the sink or under the sink with the dish drainer. Our last stay was at SSR in July. We had a box of dishwasher detergent. We have never had dishwasher tablets on any stay.
There should be a list on the inside of one of the cabinets that tells everything you should have.

I'd read a lot on these boards about how lousy the cookware was. We were traveling with someone doing Atkins, which meant cooking eggs every morning - and flying - I wasn't going to haul my frying pan - so we'd just deal.

The frying pan we had was really nice. In great shape. Definately non-stick. Cleaned like a dream.

I wouldn't want to do Christmas dinner with the small amount of cookware in that little kitchen. But it was better stocked than my first apartment.

DO bring salt and pepper, coffee and coffee filters, sugar and cream or creamer, and extra laundry detergent (if you even THINK you might do some laundry).

I cook a lot in OKWest - think I even use the OVEN! I have never made any meal that I lacked for the right item to prepare, cook or serve it.

Is it me or is it just ironic how we all gripe about the $1.00/box of laundry detergent/softener when we will more than happily pay 2-3 times as much for some things like clothing, simply because it's got Mickey ears on it.

No, I'm not picking on anyone...we bring our own detergent and dryer sheets and we'll drive to save 5 pennies per gallon on gas and complain about the price of milk while drinking a coffee that cost more than the gallon of milk, then go spend big bucks on a hockey sweater at Disney simply because it has my old hockey number and the team name happens to be the english translation of my last name. :cool2:

Our last trip Home to OKW in October 2003 we were pleasantly surprised to see not only newish non-stick cookware but new, flat topped radiant type ranges in the villa. I still used our cast iron for some of the cooking, but for things like eggs and pancakes/hotcakes/flapjacks/griddlecakes/death-by-carb-and-fat cakes, the non-stick is very convenient. I never could get a handle on cooking on the old Stainless.

Actually, it isn't the cost of laundry detergent at the Screen Door that concerns me. We will buy it if we need it. The problem is the trip down to get it. With time being such a factor - there are so many things I'd rather do than swing by the Screen Door for laundry detergent and then it doesn't get done unless its an absolute must.

But yep, you are right. I hate paying a lot for something like laundry detergent. Cut my dryer sheets in half because a box shouldn't cost $3. Color my own hair because $100 at a salon is too much. But I'm not always so frugal - I'll spend it if its something I really want. We have a book budget that is about the GNP of a small Central American country because we don't "like" the library.

Good news about the dish drainer - thanks everyone! Amazing how excited you get about such little things!!!! :teeth:

Just another note on the dishwasher detergent - in 2002 we stayed in a one bedroom at BCV and there was no dishwasher detergent. I called to request it and they kept bringing me Palmolive (There was also a little bit of a language barrier.) I had to bring the housekeeping person who brought it in and point to the dishwasher. He came back with 2 little packets of dishwasher detergent but since we were there for 8 days that didn't take us too far and I had to call again for more and was again brought Palmolive and went through the same thing all over again. It was just very frustrating so since that time I always bring some with me although it has not happened again since. We usually stay at OKW and they give you a full container of dishwasher detergent. On our last visit to OKW earlier this month there was a full box of Cascade and we also visited Hilton Head on that same trip and there we got the packets but they left at least a half dozen for us.
