when renting a car? This trip will be our 1st time renting a car and I thought I read somewhere that you need a current copy of your car insurance. Anyone know the answer? Sorry if this is a stupid question! TIA Patty

I always take a copy of mine in case I get an agent who hassles me about buying their coverage.

Never had to show it though.

It depends who you are renting from. It is also a good idea to join their preferred club and then they won't ask you about buying extra insurance and usually you can skip the rental counter.

I always bring the Declarations page from one of our vehicles and have never been asked to show it in 16+ trips. We've rented from all the onsite agencies and Hertz offsite.

We've never needed proof. By waiving their insurance you agree to pay for any damage. And you're liable for your deductible. Just read the info on the places you initial on the rental agreement. They care more about you being able to pay for the damages than anything else. Driving any car, you are the one insured for any liability by your policy. You do have to insure the cars you own, but anyone else's you drive is covered under your policy for liability and the other company will come after yours for payment of damages. Just check your policy and check your coverage for a rental car.

Rental car companies offer insurance, but they cannot, by law, make you buy theirs. Don't let them bully you. I'd only do it if you don't own a car and have no other auto insurance. Once again, (like on extended warranties), the car rental companies make a lot of money on the policies they sell since very few of their cars ever have claims filed against them.

We belong to Hertz Gold and we have to do very little when renting a car. It's waiting for us when we get there.

30 plus rentals and asked last week by off site no name place. Took it for the first time as I never heard of EZ Rental but half off price vs. all others. They tried big time to get more out of us but in the end it was fine. Actually took us to the car from **** and said check it out is it OK> It was not, filthy, old , smelly etc. so for a $3 upgrade got a nice new car. It had a dented fender and as they couldn't find my original paperwork gave me a hassle at return and I had written at signing about the damage and saved the day. It was a holiday trip last minute too, so 200 for a week vs. 500 was worth the hassle. Next week - Emerald Aisle for us!

Be sure to bring your ID card just in case there would be an accident, you would have you give your policy # on the accident report.

I would take it for yourself, but they didnt ask for it, nor did Alamo ask me to but extra... was easy dealing with them at airport ....

We always, always, always bring our insurance cards, even though we have never been asked for proof. We occasionally use L & M, and I have heard that they sometimes ask. So far they never have asked us, but I like to be prepared just in case.
