I was wondering how you prevent them from getting taken. Is there a key or a lock? If I rent one from off site I would be concerned. I wouln't want to pay for it.

Yes, there are keys! :thumbsup2

The first time we went (2007) I rented daily from WDW Parks and had no problem. The second time (2008) we went I rented from an outside rental company, but again, had no problems.

You see ECV's everywhere parked and unattended! I even left (easily replaceable) items in my basket like drink holders, my cane pouch, hand wipes, ect... and they were not touched! I think you will be just fine! :goodvibes

I did get rental insurance BTW for the outside rental (did not cost much) because it would cover any potential damage to the ECV (and believe you me, I was challenged backing/manuvering into the spots on the bus so I was glad to have that piece of mind, and not worry about scratches and such)! :rotfl:

I have never heard of an ECV stolen. The key is a common one that can start almost any scooter. The secret is to make your rented or own scooter unique so that people do not hop on your scooter and for you to find your scooter if it is moved. CMs sometimes are sent out to tidy up stroller parking and to clear sidewalks and doorways. It can be a t-shirt worn on the seat back, a towel on the seat, or in my case I have key chains dangling from the front, lime green mickeys on the front and rear plus a scarf.

I have in the past even left my purse at DLR on the loading dock. CMs only let a few disabled guests on the loading dock at one time. They watch the dock and if someone were to take a scooter they would know.

Each scooter has a freewheel lever that allows it to be pushed but I will not say as I do not know about WDW scooters and if I did I would not tell. Freewheeling lets the CM move the scooter without the key. Mine is damaged so I just leave the key in mine. There is nothing to fear.

Just do not leave expensive stuff in the scooter or stroller. The parks are safe but with 10000+ people in a park the odds are that one of them guests is a kleptomaniac or a petty thief. Ooh look pretty precious object and it is gone. I see the expensive purses, clothes, and stuff in parks but thieves want stuff they can resell easily and take easily.

I never worry about any possibility of my personal ECV being stolen. Of course it is primarily bright (Figment) purple with an orange rear end and large Cheshire Cat decals on both sides.

And I never leave anything of value in the basket.

The key is the "key"--so that I don't forget and leave it in the scooter (easy to do) I use one of those stretchy cord like thingies (like you get at a casino to put your players' club card on) and put the key on that--and attach it to my purse or belt loop. That way the key is always remembered!

I was just going to say that. :cutie:

ive never had it stolen, but i have had it moved before without my knowledge. I apparently parked it in the wrong spot at the animation studio in hollywood studios, and when we left, I noticed it was gone. I went over to where the regular stroller parking was, and there was the scooter - they do this just to keep everything from being cluttered, but just be aware of it if you have to transfer somewhere that someone might move it for you to the exit.

We just got back from DL, and at least two cast-members suggested we take the key with along with us (while on rides), hmm wonder why ? You never know who's out there so if your scooter has a key bring it onto the rides with you, it can still be pushed around but not driven so don't worry about the cast members not being able to move it out of the way.

And yes, do not leave any valuables or merchandise no matter how secure the dock seems or number of staff are around. Hard for them to keep track of what belongs to whom so I don't think they would question if someone took something from your scooter.
