Do certain Captains not like the horns?

Respectfully, that is a very one sided view as to your enjoyment of your cruise vs. the disturbance caused to residents.
I live near a small airport that was only ever allowed to have prop planes fly from there. Slowly they started to creep in the occasional jet plane. They waited to see if people complained enough before applying for jet planes to be allowed. They were unfortunately, but only small private twin jet engines. Then they started testing commercial twin jet planes.
The local authorities were petitioned to stop the growth, but they saw the additional income and jobs worth the additional disturbance to residents regardless.
You cannot stop change where money is being thrown around, but sorry, blowing the ships horns for 2400 or 4000 pax in port if it is causing a disturbance to residents is a very self centered view.

I'll take the blame for that; I certainly didn't mean to come off self-centered about the horns, it was just strange to have such different experiences on two different cruises.

I used to live just behind Magic Kingdom, so I'd get a nightly awakening from thousands of dollars worth of fireworks, with a dose of steam train and steam boat whistles thrown in for good measure during the day. To me it always made me smile to think what was causing the noise, so I unfairly assumed people at PC would feel the same about a few minutes of Disney ship horns. I can also understand how it may get old.

Maybe that is why the Fantasy's maiden voyage was such a dud with the horn. We heard about the horn war between the Magic & the Fantasy the day before when the Magic set sail. We did hear them all going down the channel, but honestly the thing I looked forward to was a horn war with the Magic when we were in port together. We even left dinner midway to watch the Magic sail away. Talk about a dud! It was a special voyage and it seemed fitting that the two DCL ships would have let the horns loose.

Sorry, I was too harsh with saying self centered.

I'm just trying to be on the fence as it were and try to offer an opposing opinion as to why.

Depending on wind, direction, etc. they can be pretty hard to hear actually. That's why I always go to Deck 11 or 12 forward to hear them.

In this YouTube clip, you can hardly hear the horn, at the very beginning. Like I said earlier when we were by señor frogs in Nassau it was very muted compared to what I was expecting. My girlfriend and I both looked at each other and said "was that it?"

Yeah, the wind direction does make it travel over water!

In this video the air horn and speakers seem fairly matched in their power!

I've found this thread and the dream and fantasy do not have the air horns to play the tunes like the magic and wonder, so maybe they do not point forward enough for you to hear them?

Yeah the first time I heard the Dream horn in person I could tell right away it was "synthetic" versus the Magic/Wonder's legitimate horns. I actually prefer the sound of the older ships, but the variety of the newer.

:) Actually C6PT7, if you read my entire post again you will see that I make a case for both sides. I just do not totally agree with you that just because you live somewhere and growth brings in added congestion, noise or what-have-you, that the rights of a few override the rights of many. And I ain't talking' 'bout just ship's horns. :flower:

Lisa David and I were at Fish lips with several others. We could hear the Magic and Fantasy go at it from where we were. I agree that the little one we had was nothing to write home about. Even when the Magic was in Port in 13 from her drydock she didn't mix it up with the Fantasy.

@truck1,

do you think that the calming down of the additional regular horn blowing when leaving PC could be because of noise complaints from residents in the condo's?

Could be but..... at the same time they will use the horns more often and others once or twice. I've seen/heard one of the ships hit it at each rest and the pier and later just leaving PC. Just doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason.

So it's not a constant, middle of the night disturbance.

Except that PC isn't just DCL. There are other cruiseships leaving and arriving, and if they have container ships as well, it could very well be something that goes on often. Can't tell if there is already rail there. If so, the noise can be overwhelming. Even just unloading container ships is a noisy business.

Trust me on this. It's difficult enough living up the hill and across from a typical port. Add in cruiseships and a person could lose their mind. And I don't care if someone moved in once it was there or not; there's no need for *excess* noise.

Times the horn is not being used so often maybe because of traffic in the channel and the Master and Pilot does not want to have any confusion. Traffic can be anything, from other cruise ship, commercial freighters and tankers, fishing to small pleasure boats. There could also be fog or rain, anything that reduces visibility.

or the Captain had a headache that day!

AKK

I know in certain ports its banned, they actually blew a window out in a European port of call.

Same as restrictions on chemicals so they can clean verandahs or windows in some ports.

Theres a standard on how far away a ships horn can be heard, so at least 1 horn on the ship has to meet that standard. The speakers on the Dream class are in the same locations as the horns on the Magic class. Aft funnel facing foward. I forgot to look that last time if theres an actual horn on the Fantasy, or if they use the speakers instead.
