DME tag ripped off

How common is this? On one of our heavier bags, I assume someone (between our home airport and MCO) lifted the bag using our yellow MDE tags.. Which was then placed on a stranger's bag, because the strange bag arrived with our other luggage. Amazingly, someone figured out that the luggage with the ripped off tag was ours, because it had a replacement tag and arrived with our other luggage. But I feel bad for whoever is wondering where their one bag is. Bell services came by to pick it up, so I hope they figure out who it belongs to. It didn't even have another yellow MDE tag (except for ours which was obviously ripped and stuck back on this unknown bag). So maybe they weren't even a WDW guest. This was our first experience using DME and luggage service.

And this is why you should always have ID in your bags. I put a paper with my email on it, as well as where my bag is supposed to go. I put an identical one in an outside pocket of the bag.
Hope that bag gets to its owner!!

Even with a Magical Express tag, you should still have a regular ID on the outside of the bag. Just one of those metal ID tags that are for sale for 50 cents from machines in Wal Marts (the kind kids ear as "military tags"). My father-in-law always placed ID inside his bags but with today's searches of bags, the only thing to do would be to have a permanent label inside the suitcase but you would have to be careful of what information you put on that.

Yes, I also have a regular luggage tag. It has my last name and my email address on it...nothing else. Same on my various slips of paper. They do have where I'm traveling to in addition to my email address though. And yes, with all the bag searches going on, it does make it more difficult to put something inside the bag. That's why I put them in several places.

I will say that I've never had a dme tag come off. They are pretty much the same as the tags the airlines put on your bag. Perhaps it hadn't been affixed very well...who knows. But to think that the handlers assumed they knew which bag it was from and stuck it back on? That's pretty strange.

THIS is exactly what WE have done for over 10 years. Those chunks of paper show our trip dates, airline Res numbers, Trip Res number, Home address, and both home and cell numbers.

We do one other thing. For each bag, we SCAN the ME tag - and print an image of it on the bag inserts. Yup, the BAR CODE is dead clear - and can be scanned.

What about the ME tags? These NEVER go on a bag handle - we modified our bags with riveted strips to hold the tag on the bag face. When we use an ME tag? We re-enforce the fold point with clear strapping tape - so it must be CUT off, yet the upper bar code may be scanned.

When done - we PHOTOGRAPH the bags, and keep those photos on our cell phones. When something gets lost in transit, those photos allow Bell Services to go to war :).

It could have even happened before the DME guys got a hold of it. The things the bags go through before being loaded on the plane can pull tags - even the airline printed destination tags - off of suitcases. Happened to my sister twice flying out of MCO.

So it's possible it happened even before and the airport loaders randomly put it on a bag that apparently happened to be going to Disney anyway.

I once was picking up my luggage at the baggage claim area. I saw my bag before it got to me. A lady picked it up, and started to walk off with it. I caught up with her luckily, and said it was my bag. She checked the i.d., and sure enough it was mine. She said sorry, and went back to the luggage carousal.

Here is something else to watch out for - On our last trip DME mailed us someone else's tags. I called up DME and they sent us new tags. Our original tags must have been sent to someone else who did not even bother to check them because when we got to our resort their was luggage already waiting in our room. When I first walked into the dark room I was excited thinking our luggage actually did the impossible and beat us to the resort LOL! Then I remembered the mix up when DME mailed the original tags. Sure enough whoever received our tags just put them on their luggage without even seeing our names on them. When we called bell services they said they had been looking for this luggage all day! Our luggage showed up a few hours later with no problems. Who knows where my luggage would have ended up had I not bothered to check the tags in the first place. Make sure you check the information on the tags is correct when you get the tags in the mail!

I'm not so sure that's a great idea! Do you really want all that info out there? Now, anyone can see how long you'll be gone, where you live....almost asking for trouble.
Nope, I like the email address and last name only...sometimes the resort destination. But never anything else.
