As some of you may already know, one LA Councilman is trying to get all the elephants taken permanently away from the LA Zoo. Time is running out and it is pretty desparate, so I wanted to ask for your help. As Los Angeles locals, we have a chance to help stop this. I know it's important for our kids to be able to see real elephants and not just have the closest thing they can relate to being the Dumbo ride. I know this isn't the best forum to put this on, but the final hearings are next week.

The Zoo is asking folks to send emails to the City Councilmen or Council President (if you are outside the immediate county). The Council President's email is Councilmember.Garcetti@lacity.org .

I can send anyone the letter I received from the Zoo the other day, if you PM me. It has links on the new Pachyderm Forest exhibit that is already 30% completed. They are set to move their elephant into that area next month. If this measure passes, the project will be abandoned and no elephants will ever be allowed to be kept at the zoo again. That means thousands of city children will never see a live elephant.

I just thought some of our local DIS folks could help. I'm also going to post this on the community board, too.

We went to the LA zoo in Oct and thought the elephant looked sad in his very small cage. Are they working on his area? It was not very big and I was very disappointed on the exhibit.

They have an absolutely huge area that they are building for the elephants. Think of it on the order of the new gorilla area they have.

They are almost done with the new home for their current bull elephant -moving him in next month, in fact. Then they will be opening the new sections in 2 more phases, with the final phase done in 2010.

That is, if this current legal situation led by 1 city councilman doesn't remove him altogether to a sanctuary that no Los Angeles child will easily be able to get to.....
