No! DLR is way more easy than WDW in this regard. And believe it or not some WDW vets visiting DLR see this as a bad thing!

You can book dining 2 months in advance but even then it fills slowly.

While I personally wouldn't recommend any character meals, rest assured that don't need to book reservations at any of DLR's restaurants - unless you want a character dining experience, or if you want to go to The Blue Bayou.

Yup. I've never had to use reservations :) We tried once for Blue bayou (and I'd recommend them there or character places too) but BB was closed for referb.

Blue Bayou (esp for the 11:30am reservation for waterside seating) and Napa Rose are the only reservations I'll make more than a month in advance. We have called in the morning for same day lunch and dinner reservations, once we have our general plan for the day. It never hurts to put your name in.

what great news!!!!!!! hydro guy, i have NO IDEA why someone would think this is bad!

In WDW, I went CRAZY trying to pick times, meals etc WAY in advance. One reservation time had to be changed b/c my daughter needed a respitory treatment. The only other time they had was 10pm!!!!!!!! My husband said "who cares? we will eat someplace else." I said, "NO, there is NO PLACE else if you don't have reservations!!!!":)

thanks to all for the feedback!

I like the Minnie and Friends character breakfast. There's usually a lot of characters, and I actually really like the food there. Especially the omelets.

brer cameron,

where is the minnie & friends breakfast? thanks for the feedback.

Minnies is in Disneyland Park, past the end of Main Street, to the right off the Hub at the Plaza Pavillion. It is the only character dining in Disneyland park itself.

It is breakfast only. We love it. It is the cheapest of the breakfast buffets, though it also has the most basic spread (biscuits and gravy, made to order omletts, sausage, bacon, pancakes, oatmeal, scrambled eggs, waffles) are the warm items, plus fruit and pastry bar, plus cold cereals, etc. It's not a *fancy* spread like at GOofy's but the food is self serve all you can eat buffet and is always left us very happy. Plus you are right there in DL.

We make reservations at all the places we want to eat that is sit down. We do call and cancel if we change our mind. I have seen many a person turned away at BB and CO during the August time we go.

I would think you need reservations for Minnie's, especially if you are trying to go there before park opening, so your name is on the list to get into the park before everyone else. Same is true for breakfast at Ariel's grotto.

I've only ever tried Storyteller's for breakfast and Ariel's for lunch as far as the character meals go. I thought the food was excellent at Storyteller's, but there weren't that many characters. We saw the bears from brother bear, Meeko the raccoon and chip and dale. The buffet had tons of fresh fruit, make your omelets, salmon and bagels, eggs benedict, banana stuffed french toast, etc. You could also order off of the menu.

Ariel's was all princesses, and I liked the set up as the characters came through during the ordering and appetizer part of the meal, and you were left alone after that to eat. Food was decent with shared appetizer and dessert tray with each diner receiving their own entree.

We're also WDW veterans, and recently visited DL over Easter weekend and the week after. We did make dining reservations. They were probably not needed for anything except Blue Bayou and the Fantasmic premium viewing, but I'm used to WDW and like having things planned out. We also did the WOC viewing package and made reservations for that. However, when we decided to add Goofy's Kitchen one morning, there was absolutely no problem getting a reservation the day before. And this was during a very busy spring break time period, so I wouldn't stress too much. However, if you want BB or Fantasmic PV, then definitely make reservations. I'm sure Napa Rose would require them too.

As for character meals, we liked Goofy's the best. Minnie's was fine, but chaotic. Characters everywhere! Not that this is really a complaint, it was just a lot of picture taking, autograph book-signing and not much actual eating. Ariel's Grotto was fun, too. They had some openings, but not at the usual times (so a walk-in could get a 2:30pm lunch or something).

Coming from a WDW veteran, you will be pleasantly surprised with the ease of getting dining reservations. But if there is something you must-do, I'd still make the reservation. You can always call and change it later!

Mary -

You don't necessarily have to have a reservation for the character meals. While it does help and it wouldn't hurt to have one, it's not mandatory at DLR. You will still get seated. You may have to wait a while, but you will get a table. My friends and I have gone to both Goofy's Kitchen and the Critter Breakfast with reservations and without, and it was fine no matter which way we did it.

The restaurants where you really need or should have reservations are Blue Bayou, as previously mentioned, and, in my opinion, Carnation Cafe because the seating is so limited there and the tables fill up fast.

Now, as for which character meal is best for your 4-year-old son....You will get many opinions on this topic, as it is very subjective. All of the meals have their pros and cons, all of the restaurants have their 'off days,' and you will find some people who say that one character meal is awful, terrible, they'll never go back, etc., while other people will say that the same exact meal is their absolute favorite and they will always go back!:rotfl2::rotfl2:

So how do you choose? There's no right or wrong opinion.

Basically it boils down to this:

1. Ariel's Grotto's breakfast and lunch in DCA is all Princesses, so I would imagine that your 4-year old is not interested in that?

2. Surf's Up with Mickey's breakfast at the Paradise Pier is gaining a lot of steam in the character meal realm. This meal is quickly becoming a new favorite. This is the only character meal in DLR where you will find Mickey. You can also sometimes find Daisy Duck and usually Stitch, along with Minnie, Pluto, etc. Usually, there are around 4 or 5 characters there at a time, and the restaurant is not always that busy! The characters wear fun, beach-y garb and supposedly the actual character interaction with guests is excellent. The buffet has a few interesting items (at one point there were flautas - not sure if those are still there?), but it is not too large in general. Still, most people seem to really enjoy the food. This meal opens at 7:00 a.m.

3. Minnie & Friends' breakfast in DL, hands down, has the most characters out of all the meals. So if it is a matter of seeing the most characters, this is the place to go. You may see anywhere from 8 - 14 characters, and they run the gamut from Minnie to the Pooh characters to Chip and Dale, the Mad Hatter, Captain Hook, etc., etc. Some folks say that the characters come too fast and furiously to be able to get a bite of food. Some say the food is not good. Others say it's great. It's a buffeteria-style set-up. This meal is actually a bit less expensive than the others, if I'm not mistaken.

4. Goofy's Kitchen in the DLH (my personal favorite), along with Ariel's Grotto, is the most expensive of the character meals. It's considered "premium" dining. What you are essentially paying for is the size of the buffet, which is huge. It's the largest selection of food out of all the meals. There are lots of choices for even the pickiest of eaters. My friends and I love the food and have rarely had meals that were 'off,' but again, it's all a matter of opinion and others feel differently. The number characters usually ranges from 5-8. I usually see Goofy, Pluto, Baloo, Chip and Dale and a couple of Princesses, but Minnie appears here, as does Captain Hook, the Genie, Alice and the Mad Hatter, Aladdin, Honest John, Gideon, etc. This meal is open for breakfast/brunch (but not lunch) and dinner. It opens at 7 a.m.

5. Storytellers Cafe Critter Breakfast in the GCH is the only character meal that offers a (small) buffet or menu orders (which are not cheap). There are typically 4-6 characters, and they are mostly the "woodsy and jungly" Disney characters, including the ever-present Chip and Dale, Koda and Kenai, Terk, sometimes Meeko, sometimes Rafiki, sometimes a Brer character or two, etc. Some people love this meal because of its laid-back, calm environment (unlike the high octane fun of Goofy's or Minnie & Friends). For that same reason I also kind of found it dull and blah!:rotfl2: I guess I like high octane character fun at the character meals! People also rave about the food, but I find the food to really be no different than what I've had at Goofy's, honestly. It's buffet food, but there is less of it at the Critter Breakfast. On the menu you can order a full-siized Mickey waffle, but they will also bring out some mini-waffles if you ask for them. This meal also opens at 7 a.m.

My friends from out of town are visiting DLR later this year. They have a 4-year-old son and we are definitely going to Goofy's, possibly going to Surf's Up and maybe Minnie & Friends. They don't want to overwhelm their son with so many characters right off the bat so that's why Minnie & Friends is only a maybe right now. They want to see how he handles just a few furry characters before introducing a bunch of them to him at one time. I've had enough of the Critter Breakfast to last me a while, so that's why we're not doing that one!

There are a lot of WDW vets who are ingrained with thinking that they need to make dining ressies 6 months in advance. When they come to DLR and cannot make them until two months in advance or see the entertainment schedule until one month in advance, they have withdrawal-like symptons and get really agitated. Trying to convince them this is a good thing and not a bad thing is a challenge!

So true Hydroguy - this is a good thing. It's just a little disorienting for us WDW vets. I have reservations for Blue Bayou, Napa Rose and WOC package at Wine Country Trattoria and I still think I need to make more. I'm going to restrain myself! Remember the good old days when you could make reservations at WDW restaurants the morning of? The screens at Epcot where you talked face to face with a reservation agent were the coolest!

wow, what fabulous info!!!!!!!!!! thank you sooo much. you all are great!

sherry e - thanks for the details about each plan. i really appreciate the clarity. i think (like your friend's 4 year old) we will make reservations for goofy. my son is 4 and LOVESSSS goofy!

thank you all!!!!!1
