Just got back from a stay on points at the Disneyland Hotel to enjoy some of the 50th Anniversary festivities. We had exactly enough points left from the 2004 UY to stay 3 nights in a standard room at DLH. When I checked in I was pleasantly surprised to received a "Welcome Home" and the familiar DVC folder with all our info. DH and I also noticed lots of others folks with the folders over the course of the weekend so the lower points promotion must be having some effect.

We were upgraded to a "premium" view which meant looking out over the pool. We were on the 8th floor. Our room was in good condition and we enjoyed the Disney decor especially the bedspread with the attraction motif. Dh was trying to figure out a way to stuff it in our suitcase. Some parts of the hotel are very dated, reminded us of the Contemporary with it's 70's decor but other parts look to have been recently updated. One small annoyance was the Sundries and Souvenir shops closed at 10 and 9pm which I thought was really odd since the park was open until midnight each night of our trip.

We had breakfast one morning at Granville's which was really good and very fast. We ate at the IHOP later in the weekend and commented Granville's was only a few bucks more expensive for a much nicer atmosphere.

Lots of DVC promotion all around the resort. There were several kiosks at the hotel, in DTD and in the parks. Also the DVC channel on the hotel TV. They also have a special edition of Member Perks for the DL resort. Make sure to carry it with you. We had lunch at Pacific Wharf at DCA and the CM didn't know there was a discount when I asked so I showed him it in the book.

Now for DL, DCA and the 50th anniversary celebrations. DH and I have been to DL a few times now but we are always struck by how small it seems compared to WDW. DL always seems crowded around the walkways and attractions even where the line ups weren't very long and this past weekend was no exception. We also noticed on this trip though that they seem to have a few kinks in their system that WDW has long since resolved. For example every day we went to DL they maybe only had half the entry gates open. And at the gates the CM had to manually scan and sometimes date stamp your ticket. This was so time consuming. The finger scan is so much quicker but I understand that many people are probably only on 1 day tickets so it's not worthwhile. Also we had charging privileges back to the DL but rather than tied to your room card you had a separate paper card and had to show photo ID. Took extra long at the merchandise shops and food stops. Also really made us appreciate how almost all the quick serve carts at WDW now take a room charge.

We loved all the new 50th anniversary attractions. I particularly liked looking for the 50 hidden gold Mickey ears and loved the photo collages at the various attractions. The Block Party at DCA is awesome. Super high energy and colourful. We saw the parade at DL twice once in the afternoon and once in the evening. It was also fantastic. We did the new Monsters Inc which is really cute. Basically a dark ride but well done. Saw 'Turtle Talk' at DCA. Same basic attraction as at Epcot but in a bigger and more comfortable setting. I would guess it holds twice as many people as in 'The Living Seas'. Also the movie about the history of DL hosted by Steve Martin was great. There are also some great displays of artefacts in the Opera Hall where the movie plays.

The highlight for both DH and I was probably the fireworks at DL. Due to high winds they were cancelled both Fri and Sat night but Sunday night we were able to see them right in front of the castle. Probably the first 20 rows of people were seated in front of the castle and out on the road. We were worried people would start standing but I think everyone was in awe. They use a lot of attraction music and special effects like fire balls. Tinkerbell also makes several passes by the castle.

I am 6 months pregnant and therefore didn't get to do my faves like Indiana Jones or the new Space Mountain but seemed to find lots of other stuff to do. Unfortunately the weather was miserable. It was warmer at home in Toronto than in LA and was drizzling at some points. The first night there I think it was only 40 degrees.

I'd be happy to answer any questions.

Thanks for your report on DL! My DH wants to go there in Sept. instead of our usual WDW trip, and I have to admit I haven't been too excited. But, we have a new baby and DH hates the flight from Salt Lake to Orlando...Your report made me more excited for the 50th stuff!

Great report! I was lucky enough to see the fireworks in DL in Dec and loved some of the effects, especially the Haunted Mansion ones.

we were there almost five years ago. My son's Godmother invited us and her kids/grandkids for a big trip and I know she paid a lot for the rooms and they were really sub-par. I was really surprised and disappointed. The Grand Californian was brand new at the time and it sure looked nice in comparison!

We will be there for Easter, staying at the DLH using points for a standard room. How did you get a upgrade, did you ask or DLH just gave it to you ?
Was the hotel, park crowed? did you visit DTD, did you eat there ? I know you said the weather was not very good, were you still able to swim?

Thanks for the report.

I have a question about tickets. I know you can use wdw parkhoppers at DL. Do they let you use WDW annual passes there? This is definitely wishful thinking on my part...............but it would be nice!

Warmer in Toronto? I believe it! Toronto can have some beautiful weather at times.

That I think is a hidden treasure of DLH! Note that no where does it even mention Granville's is open for breakfast. It's great and fast, and sometimes you might even get the place to yourself!

If Ashley is serving, she's fantastic. She can identify all the 1940's stars in the photos decorating the restuarant's walls.

Nope - no WDW annual passes! Although if you are going for 2 trips in 12 months, the DL AP can make sense. You can upgrade your multi-day ticket to one up until the last day.

You can use WDW tickets, but only because a day at WDW is more than DL!

Another great option is the So Cal City Pass - 5 atttractions (3 day DL/DCA, 1 day Universal, Sea World, either San Diego Zoo or Wild Animal Park) - about $200 for adults.

I had called MS a few days before and asked for the Marina tower and a higher floor. She said that there was no guarantees.

We didn't swim but saw people who were so I'm assuming the pool was well heated. In the afternoons it was only in the mid 50s and in the 40s at night so there was no way I was swimming.

The parks seemed crowded because everything at DL is so much smaller so there's not as much room to move around. I only saw waits of about 30-40 min on the most popular attractions (like Indy, SM).

We walked through DTD every day between the hotel and the parks. Took our time and browsed lots of shops. We ate at Catal which had a 10% DVC discount. It was alright but a bit overpriced for what you got we thought.

We had a 3 day hopper. There was a promotion buy an adult hopper for kid's price.

We also just returned from a 2 night stay at the DLH on points. I booked two standard rooms and made no requests other than asking for the rooms to be near to each other.

We were upgraded to connecting pool view rooms - the CM just told us that we were upgraded, we didn't have to ask. This was for March 3 & March 4. The CM also gave us a big "Welcome Home" and I was surprised to get the same DVC folder as we do at WDW. Found out the CM used to work at WDW so he knew all about the DVC. As an added bonus, the rooms were ready. We checked in between 1 and 1:30 pm. I suspect the resort was not full the previous evening though, so that probably made a difference. It did appear to be full for the weekend, but I have no way of knowing for sure.

When I asked the CM checking us in for some restaurant recommendations because it was my DH's birthday that day, he excused himself and came back with an autographed picture from Mickey and the gang, as well as a birthday button. To my surprise, my DH actually wore it and he did get some special treatment from other CMs during the day. The highlight was a "free" birthday dessert at Granvilles - our waiter had almost the same name as my DH - first and last. BTW, Granvilles was very good both for dinner and breakfast. Impressed with food and service.

Best wishes -

Thanks for the report. Are the DVC standard rooms better than a standard room you would book through Disney? Can you elaborate on the rooms a little? Also - does anyone know about haunted mansion being redecorated for halloween? And how is the weather in the middle of Decemer generally speaking. Thank you.

I don't think there was any difference in room for DVC members. The room had 2 beds (I think Queen) and a couch that could probably be used as a day bed for a small 5th person. We were in a handicapped room so the bathroom was a little different lay out.

I forgot to add in my review, normally the DLH charges a "resort fee" but this was included when using points. So we had a newspaper in the morning, free parking and internet access included.

We have been to DL before in Oct and the Halloween layover at HM was amazing, I think it is an annual thing. As for Dec weather I have no idea. We have been to Cali in June, Feb, March and Oct and only had nice weather once so we have terrible luck.

You guys are really making me excited for my August trip to DL!! Does anyone know how much lower the points were? I looked on the website and can't find any info!! I really can't wait!!!

My understanding is that the reduction was 25%. After you sign on to the members' website, click on the link for "View Point Charts" (right side of the web page under Member Resoures). The chart you want will be under the Disney Collection - Disneyland Resort in California.

You'll see that standard view rooms in August at the DLH are 29 points per night and at the Grand Californian, they are 37.

Best wishes -
