Diuretics?

For anybody who takes a diuretic, natural or prescription. Can you please let me know what it is and if it works etc. I am having real problems with retaining fluid on my lower legs, ankles and feet. I have been taking a natural diuretic since Sat. but so far I haven't seen any real difference. I am seriously considering going to see my doctor to ask about a prescription diuretic, but I just hate to take medications.

I would recommend going to see your Dr. You need to find out why you are retaining water in your legs.

My DH takes Lasix and it definitely works.

Lisa the water retention runs in my family. My mom suffered from it, I've got it and now my niece who is only 19 has developed it. I saw the practice nurse about it a while ago, she took my blood pressure, and did some other test, I think for the kidneys, but never mentioned giving me anything for it. So I am wondering whether to go and ask the doc. if he'll give me a prescription for some type of diuretic, but I don't know whether there are side effects or not.

HI Catherine. Please see your doctor about the fluid retention. Over the counter drugs can be dangerous if not needed.
Also, fluid could be related to your heart or lungs.

Catherine, please see your doctor. Ankle edema can be caused by a variety of medical conditions. Use of a diuretic may be one form of therapy the doctor may choose. There are several diuretics that can be prescribed that are very effective and have few side effects. I'm a pharmacist and have dispensed many diuretic prescriptions.

I have a prescription for Lasix but I take it very rarely. I worry that someday I might have a medical condition that seriously needs the help of a diuretic (for example congestive heart disease) and if my body is used to taking Lasix then I won't see good results.
