I'll be taking my Mom to the HDDR in October. She can walk short distances with a cane. She will be renting a scooter for the week. We will be staying at Wilderness Lodge. I'm trying to figure out if we need to take a cab to HDDR or if the bus drops you off close to the entrance. We're trying to avoid taking the scooter ( & dealing with the loading/unloading hassle). Also, how close is the campfire/movie to the HDDR? If it's a very short distance, we may go there after the HDDR (5PM dinner).
Any help from you experienced campers would be greatly appreciated. I'm afraid we'll get there on the bus & she'll have trouble getting around if she has to walk very far.

It isn't too far from the bus station to the HDDR, so you should be ok there. You can take a bus from pioneer hall to the loop where the campfire is, but it is from the bus stop to the campfire is a bit of a walk. So I would say you'd be ok without the scooter getting from the bus to the HDDR, but not to the campfire, to do the campfire it would be better for her to have the scooter. Those are my thoughts, hope they help.

Distance from HDDR to the campfire is a little less than 1/2 mile. You can take the Orange bus from the Settlement Depot to the Meadows trading post, then it is a short walk over to the campfire.

The WL bus will let you off at the Settlement depot, which is maybe 100 yards from Pioneer Hall where the HDDR is.

Taking a cab will be worse - it will let you off at the Outpost, then you will have to take a bus to the Settlement anyway.

Also, the sidewalks at Ft. Wilderness are very scooter friendly. There is also a scooter friendly trail between Wilderness Lodge and Ft. Wilderness. You might enjoy the evening walk/ride!!

:woohoo: Its a strole around 1.0 mi I'd say. If budget can stand it golf cart is the way... pricey but worth it. Need to reserve in advance though.

Golf carts cannot go on the trail between Ft. Wilderness and Wilderness Lodge, however, only ECVs, bicycles, and on foot.
