Disney's Price Increases are obscene....

Not everyone has a union dictating their salary, or their salary increases. In fact, most of us don't -- believe it or not. Nobody at my company has seen a raise in at least 3 years. We don't stay here because we love it, but because there's not exactly a lot of jobs out there, so employers have NO incentive to increase paychecks unless there is a union holding their feet to the fire.

theaslip: Thank you for your scorn. I hope you and your family have a wonderful time at Universal, and that you feel at least some sense of gratitude at making more in a month than people with equally important jobs make in a year. Have a magical day.

cyrano: I think this thread is getting rather nasty. Might it be time to close it?

Likewise nonsense! Have you ever worked at the same job for years for the same pay? I've never known ANYONE to do so, and I certainly never would have. Some jobs require more knowledge as you go along, but I know plenty of people that do nothing different today than they did when hired (and have gotten steady raises) except they have proven loyalty, honesty and dependability. Those qualities in themselves, irrespective of additional duties, makes them owed pay raises.

"Loyalty, honesty and dependability" are qualities enough in and of themselves to demand merit raises? Really? You actually believe this? Bless your heart.

You say something nasty then ask a mod to close the thread as it's getting nasty? Maybe you should send the mod a PM.

?

You are correct, regarding unions. They've held many feet to the fire. Many companies have closed up shop, and left the country....never to return.

I don't think that what I said was nasty, though certainly to the point.

PM... Certainly.

I don't feel any sense of gratitude at my salary. I feel I have earned every penny, and my employer is very fortunate to have me. I decided early on to pursue a career that I would both love and which be specialized and differentiate me to make my skills extremely valuable. I studied hard, worked hard, became a US Naval Officer and Naval Aviator. I have flown in combat. I have a job that requires I maintain excellent physical health, high moral standards, and am re-trained and tested several times each year to ensure I am capable of handling catastrophic situations so as to minimize harm to person and property. I have tremendous, incredible respet for every worker, in every job. I do not share the belief that all jobs are equal. I know they are not. I've heard much on this thread about paying what the market will bear (or demands). If my employer could get away with paying me less, I'm sure they would. Believe this - you are much safer in an airplane today because of unions, then you ever would be without them. Airlines with weak or no unions have higher incidents and safety issues, skimp on training, push the envelope in every way they can. In the name of profit. You can thank unions for more mandatory crew rest, better training, better maintenance standars for airplanes, and for promoting a culture where whistle-blowing is encouraged in the name of safety. Google comtinental 3407 if you believe all unions are bad. This one had a non-existent union, skimped on training and safety, and looked the other way when problems come up. I hope none of your kids are on the next continental 3407.

Actually, some have had the same job for years, but make less (or have no job at all). Many have reduced profits or have gone out of business.

I'm happy you know plenty, who have not been affected in this economy.

I was not being snide or malicious when I made this statement, and it wasn't meant in the context that I don't know some that have lost their jobs. We live in the Triangle area of NC and there are many that have had merit raises as I stated. I wasn't actually singling out the down turn of the economy - was responding to a pp about people not deserving raises after being with a place of business for several years with the qualities I mentioned versus someone just being hired on for the same job/work that would deserve the same pay. These are two different topics and I was not addressing the economy - hope this is clearer.

My brother is an avionics tech/engineer and would agree with you 100%. :thumbsup2 I have heard these same words come from his mouth - he has been on both sides.

I speak from what I've seen in my friends, family and myself. You may be as sarcastic as you want, but my answer to a pp was not meant that way at all - it has proved true. It matters not what you believe or think :confused3 Even as child on our farm, I can remember my dad raising the pay for those working for us longer - even though their job description/duties remained the same.

Thank you very much for understanding the importance of unions for American consumers and American workers.

You are correct, regarding unions. They've held many feet to the fire. Many companies have closed up shop, and left the country....never to return.

Many companies left the US to replace American workers with slave-wage workers in China. Thank people in Washington for allowing wholesale outsourcing of American jobs. It was nothing to be proud of. Just plain ole' corporate greed.

Would you rather pay a lot for hockey tickets or 10-day Disney Tickets? Point proven.

You seem to have a reading comprehension problem. I'll repeat - YOU ARE NOT OWED A RAISE.

Whether you get one or not is a business decision. Why? Because YOU ARE NOT OWED A RAISE.

While, loyalty and competence are valued, it doesn't necessarily translate into "deserving of a raise". This mindset has forced many good and capable employees into early retirement..or put them on the unemployment rolls. Quite often, the "less experienced" are better educated and surpass "their seniors" in many areas.

I seem to pay a lot for both of these things. Hmmm. Perhaps I should find some new hobbies/interests. ;)

The price increase is what it is. To me, Disney is still worth it. That being said, Disney is expensive and I definitely need to save up to be able to afford to go. If price increases mean I have to save longer and not go as often, then that is what I will do. Not ideal, to be sure.. but I would rather save and go once than not be able to go at all.

Because it would cost more to train new people.
