Disney's HHI vs. Marriott's Grande Ocean

I own Disney's HHI. I would love to hear some thoughts/opinions on the Marriott timeshares in Hilton Head. Is the Grande Ocean the nicest beachfront property? How does it compare to HHI? Our family loves HHI, but I'm starting to think I want the beach front/ocean view.

Would love some thoughts.

I've stayed at a number of places on the island. IMO, GO is the nicest timeshare in the best location. Monarch actually has the best location but certainly is not as nice as GO. The other two beach front Marriott's, Surfwatch and Barony Beach, are also very nice though I don't feel their locations is as good as GO nor do I think their resort layout is as good, especially if one exchanges in. All are 2 BR NON lockoff units ALL Marriott's on HH with two exceptions. Monarch has an owners 3 BR unit which they have sold (I almost bought it for Xmas resale) and Surfwatch has 3 BR units. Given the exchange is significantly less points than a 2 or 3 BR at DVC HH and barely more than a 1 BR for SUMMER, I'm surprised we don't see more people trying to do just that. It is interesting that DVC does not allow other HH resorts to trade in to the resort there but Marriott will.

My opinion of the best timeshares on HH to use:
  1. GO OF
  2. Barony OF
  3. SW Ocean Vista
  4. GO Ocean Side
  5. Barony OS
  6. SW OS
  7. SW Garden View
  8. Barony GV
  9. DVC HH
  10. Monarch mostly due to location.
A similar list with location as the only criteria would put DVC mid-pack at best for all the 50 or so timeshares on the island. DVC moves up so much simply due to the resort quality compared to many.

My order of preference to exchange in to Marriott's:
  1. GO (doesn't have garden view)
  2. SW (GV units are better than at Barony and there's a good chance that's what you'll get on exchange).
  3. BB (GV across the road but has 2 master suites).
  4. Monarch (location)
  5. Heritage (free golf for each day even for non Marriott exchangers)

This is a great thread. Nice info, Dean. I'm printing it since we own Marriott, too.

We actually just got an exchange into a grand villa at Disney's Hilton Head resort for late fall and I want to go over and take a look at Surfwatch, Barony, and Grande Ocean while we're there.

Why not do the tour at SW and ask for a day pass in addition to your dining dollars or reward points. As a Marriott owner, one only has day pass privileges into the home resort but often they will allow it anyway for slower times. Call GO and ask if you can come by and look around and spend a couple of hours at the pool.

Dean,
This is very helpful, thanks much. We will be in HHI at DVC the first week of August. Would it be helpful for us to do a tour of Grande Ocean while we are there?

Thanks again.

SW is the only resort in active sales and that is where the sales center is. Last I knew, the resale center was still at GO though. I think doing a sales tour is a personal thing, I think it would be helpful and educational but some find it stressful. If you do decide to tour at SW, they can give you info & prices on any resort in active sales as well as developer resales. But I would never direct you to buy retail, I don't think it's a wise move to throw away that type of money. They will try to convince you of the benefits of the reward points but the numbers just don't add up IMO. So if you do tour, promise me you won't buy until you've looked at resale for what you're interested in.

LOL, promise Dean! I likely will not do the tour. I don't like thumb screws much!!

Maybe we'll try to bike around and get a look...worth a try.

Thanks for the advice tho, Diane

I love to do the tours to get any tidbits and learn about things/resorts/systems I might not know as much about, my wife, not so much. While I'd never do the tour just for the perks, I likely wouldn't get my wife to do it without them.

My parents are wanting an ocean view unit at Hilton Head the week we are there. So based on the info you posted, Dean, I booked them a week at Grande Ocean instead of Surfwatch. I booked Grande Ocean with a bonus week (November 15th check-in). What kind of request should I make to get them a decent ocean view that week and what are my chances for a nice view for them? I'll be there at check-in, so it will be under my name (hopefully it helps being a Marriott owner). I could have gotten a 3 bedroom at Surfwatch, but views of the ocean are really important to mom and dad.

Also, how far away is Grande Ocean from Disney's Hilton Head resort, since we'll be driving back and forth between the two resorts?

GO is several miles, SW is actually closer It's been a while but I'm guessing about 5-6 miles, SW maybe 2 miles. Have them list you in the unit as well so you can get a parking pass and have access to the pools, etc. For requests, I'd ask for OF and highest floor possible and hope for the best. Given the time of year and order of preference GO gives to Marriott exchangers, they likely will not be disappointed. It'd be hard to pass up the 3 BR though.

Thanks, Dean. Since it's a slower season, like you said, hopefully that will help. Ocean view is really important to mom and dad as they like to sit on the balcony. My husband and I actually are going to stay the first night with them because the Disney exchange doesn't start until Sunday.

I figure the Disney Grand Villa should be great no matter what building I get put in (I think there's only 5 of those at Hilton Head).
