Resort Thread Disney's GRAND FLORIDIAN Resort & Spa + Construction Updates!!

I’m here now and everything is great! I will post more info and pics (probably not until after my trip), but wanted to pop on and see if anyone had any questions while I’m still here? We are much busier this trip than usual but I will try my best to pop back on and see if anyone needs anything!

Glad you’re having a great trip! Hope you get some time to relax tho. 😂

Any pictures of construction, or anything you think we need to see that hasn’t been noted, would be great! Thanks and hope you’re having a great time!

Grand Floridian Lobby Reimagining Update: Staircase Unveiled, New Wallpaper, Birdcage Bar Theming, and More

Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort has been a construction zone for months as Disney works to reimagine the space, but we’re starting to turn a corner and see some projects wrap up. During a recent visit to Magic Kingdom, we stopped by the Grand Floridian to get an updated look at the latest work, including some areas that are now complete. Here’s a look around!

The Grand (Staircase) Reveal

Early last month, we brought you a first look at a new mural that would preside over the grand staircase. Now, work has wrapped up on not only the new mural, but also a recarpeting of the staircase to give it a fresh new look.

Wallpaper Upgrades

One aspect of the project that has gone a little bit under the radar is the wallpaper upgrades taking place throughout the lobby area. First, here’s a look back at the old wallpaper design. Vertical lines were prevalent throughout the lobby, but they have been replaced.

We’ll start with a look at the elevator foyer areas. The photos below are of the second-floor elevator bank area. As you can see, the vertical line wallpaper has been replaced with designs that feature tree branches and birds. This wallpaper is similar to the wallpaper that you’ll find in the other Grand Floridian campus-style buildings.

Other wallpaper updates include the transition areas between the first-floor main entrance and the monorail egress. Here’s a look at that wallpaper design.

Bell Services & Check-In Areas

The Bell Services area has relocated to the “left” side of the lobby as it relates to the main entrance from the porte cochere. This area was previously underutilized, at least in recent years.

Construction continues on the main check-in area. As we can see, there is still work to be done on the desks, while new lighting fixtures and wallpaper have been installed. Construction walls have been removed from this area, and only curtains are in place right now. To me, that suggests that this area will open soon.

Birdcage Bar Update

Last, but not least, we have an updated look at the lobby birdcage bar, which is making some wonderful progress. More than just a skeleton frame, the birdcage bar now has theming elements, including some wood grain panels that give it a warm, elevated look. Here are a number of photos of the bar from different angles around the lobby.

Newly construction of a themed Disney bar area with Disney employees working on furniture and decor.

As a reminder, here’s the previously released concept art for the Grand Floridian lobby reimagining project. The work is expected to be completed early next year.

I am going to break up what would be a long post into multiple posts since I know myself well enough to know that I’ll never get it all typed in one sitting! I will start with construction photos first. I don’t think mine offer any additional detail besides what has already been posted from other sources, but I know that some on this thread have a more discerning eye for subtle differences so I will post them just in case they interest anyone.

Mon, Tues, and today (Wed) were very noisy starting around 9:30 am. Not sure how long the noise lasted as we left around 10:30 each day. The noise sounded like drilling. There was no noise in the evenings, and we did spend a lot of time at the lounge. Our rooms were on the second floor far from the lobby so I can’t say for sure whether noise was audible from the rooms around the atrium. On Friday and today we were in then lounge at midday and there was no noise at that time, either.

All photos except the first one of the check in desks (yesterday) are from today. Garden View Tea Room has had a lot going on. Birdcage elevator has been being painted. Lots of work being done on the bar but I didn’t try to discern exactly what.

I love the reports from actual guests and not just the bloggers!

It looks like the one picture you captured has the wall detail behind the front desk backlit. I've never seen that in any of the other photos and this area wasn't included in the proposed rendering so it's exciting to see!

Next up I will talk about the CL lounge/ food a bit. I'll post this on the CL thread also. I didn't take a ton of pics and the ones I took aren't great. @focusondisney 's photos were much better.

They still have self pour until 10 pm. I am not 100% sure what time it starts, but I believe that the one day that I got there around 4, it was already set out. It was not out any of the days that we were there for midday offerings, so definitely not an all day thing.

Food was very good. I want to first give my disclaimer. I am normally a HUGE lover of RPC food. All of it. My stomach was "off" this whole trip (even before arriving at the resort), so this definitely may have affected my opinion, but I didn't find as many of their offerings as delicious as I usually do. Many of them were just ok, and that surprised me. But again, maybe it was just because I didn't feel quite right. One concern that I had was that the one night, the salmon was cold. I mean, stone cold, not even slightly warm. And it had been sitting out a long time at that point. I immediately told the staff, who didn't seem concerned? I saw them go over there but didn't see them remove it, and a few minutes later we left so I am not entirely sure how it was handled. It felt like a food safety issue to me.

The food was not on its usual three day rotation this week, neither breakfast nor dinner. We ate both every single day. It seemed sort of random, and one night you might have one combo of hors d'oeuvres, and another night they'd combine some foods from one night with other foods from a different night. A couple of times they only had three hors d'oeuvres out and then maybe around 6:15 they would put out an additional one or two. One night they ran out of one item, left it empty for a while, then later brought out a totally different item to replace it. Most evenings they were not fully ready by 5 pm. Sausage only made an appearance on our fifth day, as did the breakfast pizza. There were no interesting egg dishes/ casseroles, only scrambled eggs, thought the quality of the eggs was much better. It seemed more disorganized overall than usual but it may just have been that they were intentionally doing things differently. Mickey waffles were still every day. :)

The CL staff did a MUCH better job clearing tables this time than our last trip. A complete 180. Almost clearing excessively, if that's possible, lol. And many more of the CL staff were much more personable and engaging this trip. I saw a huge positive difference overall in staff. We were also asked multiple times every day how we enjoyed our food.

We only ever saw the cucumber sandwich and the chicken noodle soup for midday offerings, not the tomato soup or pimento sandwiches, BUT, we were not there every single day. They had a really delicious chicken salad midday every day that we were there.

They had one evening offering that I don't recall seeing posted before. It was Tonkatsu, and it was actually my favorite RPC offering. Oh! And shrimp and grits was fantastic and I think that one may also be new. Both of those offerings only were served on our fourth night. Also shoutout to their meat and cheese selections each evening, which did change, my dh was thrilled with the selection every evening.

I'm so sorry the photos ended up so out of order. I have nearly lost this whole post about ten times and at this point I just want to get it posted before the site eats it. Edited because I typed out what each photo was but then it posted them in completely different order than what they were in before I hit post so my post made no sense. I give up, lol. Most of it is self explanatory. The plate with three things (sorry that is a little gross looking) has the Tonkatsu on the right and the Asian slaw on the right. The two pink drinks were new welcome drinks.

Also wanted to add, they seem to be focusing on the "Royal Plan Club" verbiage right now. Previously, a lot of items were just embellished with "GF." But now they have RPC napkins, some of the slippers say RPC, the toilet paper and tissue embosser says "RPC" etc.

Nice! I remember the embossed stuff & we had a printed welcome page on the dresser. But we didn’t have any slippers in the room. We had brought them from YC & have a lot of pairs at home, so,I didn’t bother asking. I would have asked if I knew they might have said RPC. ☹️
