Disney's Carousel of Progress

It is my understanding they are going to fix Dads hand, make each of them look a little older and the big change... the dog will now be a walking skeleton, after all the dog is over 90 human yrs old and that is 630 yrs in dog years...

Just kidding. :duck: We love CoP. It is a nice simple attraction and one of the few times you can spend a few minutes with Walt.

I remember "hearing" that CoP could be moved to the Walt Disney Museum in San Francisco. Personally, I hope not .

I would be devastated. That ride means a lot to many people and needs to stay exactly where it is.

I don't see anyway for this to happen. The building the museum is housed in is not nearly big enough, even if it didn't have the museum in it. The museum is in a former barracks located on the old Presidio army base. From the locals that I had talked to when I was there last Sept., the people that are in control of the land aren't allowing anything to be built that doesn't fit with the existing structures. So if thats true then I serious doubt that a giant round building to house CoP would be allowed.

I thought the museum was wonderful, made even better by he fact that Diane Disney Miller was there that day, my only regret was that I didn't speak to her. I also enjoy CoP and visit at least once every trip and agree with others, it could use some repairs and upgrades, but it needs to stay where it is.

The WDFM could not hold this show, nor could they afford to run/maintain it. Besides, the museum is not owned or operated by Disney. I don't think WDW would just give it to the museum.

Yep this too, in fact these are even bigger reasons than the ones I gave why this wouldn't happen.

I read that Disney has approached Garrison Keillor (A Prairie Home Companion) to record a new soundtrack for Carousel of Progress, but that he has so far either said no or been unavailable. I think he would be great. Of course, this may be just a rumor....:confused3

I love the Carousel of Progress. It is a Family favorite and the first thing we go to when entering the Magic Kingdom (believe it or not). Wif and 2 kids 21 & 19 usually go to fast pass at Buzz Lightyear, then CoP, then the People Mover, then either fast pass return or space mountain.
But this year in Aug will be our first trip with the NEW FantasyLand so we may alter our plan MAYBE, But I doubt it. The ages of my kids dont really have alot of interest in The new Fantasy land. But I am glad I have kids at the ages they are that still transform themselves back to childhood and play and sing and basically have fun.
That is why CoP is our favorite, we go on it first then cant get that song out of our heads and sing it the rest of the day. Along with all of the Corny lines that they have on that attraction. BUT we love it it is pure Disney!! We love the nostalga and the classic touch that Walt himself gave to this ride or attraction. Not alot of attractions that Walt created that have been un-altered over the years and this is the best. The fact that it was created for the World Fair and its history sold me on it years ago. I may seem to be barking alot about it that is how much we love it. This attraction should be celebrated and NEVER Changed!!

Well said and my family agree's 100%!!:thumbsup2
Every trip my family takes to Disney our trip to the airport starts with "What a great big beautiful tomorrow......." and it to, is our first ride of our MK day! LOVE IT!!!

I wish they would change it back to the original version, prior to the 80's renovation.

I agree that the last scene could use a bit of a tweak, and the dog's ribbon needs to be fixed! I've been there several times over the last few months, and the bow is falling apart; several loops are on the floor. I don't want to see the ride gone, certainly - it's a family favorite, and even my 16-year-old daughter insists we ride on it once a visit because "it's a tradition!". :goodvibes

In the third scene the narrators " neck skin" is popping out from his collar.

I don't think there's ever a reason to become concerned that any ride closes down for a couple of days. All of the rides need maintenance, touch-ups, fresh paint, etc., and sometimes it's the sort of thing that you can't do overnight. I'd only be worried if it was taken offline for an "indeterminate" amount of time without a stated reason.

Would you be so kind as to elaborate? I did not get to experience Disney until April 1990. How was it different? I am very interested in old or discontinued attractions (be sure to check out my friend Alison's Walt Dated World). Thank you in advance for your time.

I remember it prior to the 80's, barely. They added the technology and changed the music. The song used to be "Now is the Time"

I remember COP at Disneyland in the 70's, and the song was "It's A Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow". I don't recall a song called "Now Is The Time".

I only really know it from the last few trips going back to 2008 or so, but I wouldn't think they'd ever go back to an original version, especially as the last scene has seemed intended to reflect a future date from the time of viewing. If they were to make any larger changes, I'd think they'd start with the last scene being updated to be more futuristic than it is now.

It is the Carousel of Progress after all. . .;)

Looks like it was "It's a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow" originally, then in the mid-late 70s when it moved to FL it was changed to "Now Is The Time" to help push the GE products from the sponsor. In the mid-90s (1996 according to wiki) it was changed back to "It's a ..." as tribute to the original show.

It's wiki, but it's good enough for this stuff :p

Thanks for the input . I think the general consensus is the Love for this attraction AND Walts own love for it too. That is why I think it will never move. And I hope it does not. NOW I am pumped and want to see the Great Big Beautiful tomorrow" Today!!!

People have been, and still are, quite vocal about a number of attractions that have been moved. Carousel of Progress was already moved from its original home, and you can find plenty of people to lament the changing or closure of a number of past rides. The ultimate measuring stick for Disney in terms of guest love for an attraction is foot traffic. And as much as I love Carousel of Progress, it's not been a heavily attended attraction any of my past trips to the park. But for now it is hanging on, and so long as it is, well. . . .it's a big, bright, beautiful tomo-orrow. . . :rolleyes2

Wiki gets a bad rap. It's solid more often than not.

so I really like this ride. I need to know because this thread keeps going on. I assume the ride is back open since the original post was in April and it was supposed to be closed for two days. The ride is back open correct? are there any changes?
