Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge Resort Frequently Asked Questions (slight update 5/14)

Phew! Just finished the thread... luckily it's not too long... yet!

I do have a few questions still:
*The menu on WDWIG says room service is until midnight but I know I read somewhere in this thread that it's 24 hours... anyone know which is correct?
*Are all king bed rooms handicapped accessable? If so, I think we'll just do 2 queens because we prefer a tub and 2 sinks.
*Is the ENTIRE 5th floor concierge only?

Thanks :)

We just stayed at AKL in May and our King bed room was not handicap accessable. We had a tub/shower combo just like the regular rooms. We absolutely loved having the sofa to relax on when we got back from busy days at the parks.

Is the ENTIRE 5th floor concierge only?

We stayed on the 5th floor and we were not concierge, that floor just have all deluxe rooms which just mean they are a little bigger than standard.

We never use room service so I can answer that one.

No. The fifth floor is where all of the deluxe size rooms are. They are bigger then the standard sized rooms on floors 1 - 4 so they sleep 5 people instead of four. Concierge guests also stay on the 5th floor.

Only the 6th floor is Concierge only and you need your room key to access it via elevator.

Thanks for answering those questions! - anyone else know about the room service?

According to the In Room Dining Menu I have from our Feb 2003 trip it is only until Midnight and then breakfast starts up again at 6am.

Thanks for the room service info! :)

Has anyone been able to upgrade at check in to concierge? I'd like to have that AND a savanna view room, but I really don't want to risk not having a view since that is our whole purpose of staying there.

Yes... it's me again! LOL!

Has anyone noticed if the Giraffes or Zebras tend to stay near the Kudu or Zebra trail? Or do they wander all over?

Does anyone have any good pictures of a deluxe bunk room?

Is it worth it to upgrade to a "Deluxe Savanna Bunk Room"? It is the only way to guarantee a bunk bed, or would I have a good enough chance of getting them with either a standard, pool, or regular savanna view room?

Thanks. :)

My understanding is that bunk beds are only a request regardless of the room type booked. The rooms types are as follows;

Standard view Regular Size
Pool view Regular Size
Savanna view Regular Size

And then you have Standard view, Pool view and Savanna view deluxe size.

All the room type come in three different configurations.

King Bed and a day bed
Two Queens and a day bed
Two Queens
One Queen and a set of bunk beds

I guess in a long winded way I am saying that it is my understanding that Bunk Beds are only considered a request and therefore might not be granted. Hope this helps.

I called CRO about rates for my dates next year, and they want $340 a night for the deluxe savanna bunk room (guaranteed queen/bunk/daybed) or $199/standard, $220 standard pool, or $275 standard savanna with queen/bunk beds on a request basis.

Also, btw, there are no rooms with 2 queens and a daybed. The standard rooms come with one king & twin sleeper, two queens, or one queen & bunks. The deluxe rooms come with one king & daybed, two queens, or one queen & bunks & daybed (for savanna view, it is a seperate category).

Hi everyone!
This is a great FAQ. After reading it all it seems theres not much on the restaurants. So I thought that our Jiko review of last August might be helpful. Here you go:

"Dinner – Jiko
4 stars! This was fabulous, once again. We arrived at sunset Sun. evening by car from PO-FQ. You do have to pay $6 for valet here. The resort is as beautiful as ever and the lobby was very busy, as was Boma. However, Jiko was quiet. We asked the CM if we could spend time looking around the resort first, as our friends were new to the place. The animals were mostly very hidden or quiet. Only saw 1 giraffe. Anyway, we took our time getting to the restaurant, but were seated immediately. Tommi was our server and she was great! Been there since the restaurant opened (when we visited the first week they were open). Tommi was very helpful and informative with the wine and menu items. She told us that some items like the marinated Ahi tuna appetizer have been altered slightly because they have a new chef (see Disney Magazine fall 2002 article). Anyway, we were somewhat disappointed in the tuna as a result. Previously it was marinated in a vinaigrette, much more Asian flavors and tangy. Not anymore. It now has barley and beans and hummus. Unusual, still good, but not as good as the first version. DH had the smoked bacon and onion flatbread. Yummy. For entrees we chose the pan roasted monkfish and the Duck Confit and grilled Duck Sausage. The duck is unchanged, and still fantastic. The monkfish is a huge portion, pan fried (not roasted) and the vegetables and butter sauce were better than the fish. Parsnips were a nice addition. We split a bottle of wine with the entrees. Tommi let us taste a number of wines while selecting, made suggestions, described South African varieties, and even gave us phone numbers and web sites for ordering the wines we tasted. She encouraged us to share the tastes, passing around each glass, and made sure to remind us not to leave any unfinished glass on the table, as it is bad luck. Also, the last glass of our bottle was full of sediment. Not only did she notice when she removed or friend's glass, but she appeared later with a fresh glass from a new bottle. Very nice! We finished the meal with the Walt’s Gala Apple crumble and Black mission fig napoleon. The figs dish is VERY strong in flavors. The apple dish is very good. DH also had a glass of sambuca. For 2 appetizers, 2 entrees, 2 deserts, ½ bottle wine and 1 sambuca the total was around $100 (lost receipt, sorry)."

Along those same lines, I would LOVE to hear a review of Boma's breakfast buffet. I've got it booked for us early in the week, and then again the morning we depart (in case we LOVE it and want to do it twice, which probably isn't too far fetched).

Still, I would love to hear others' experiences with the morning buffet @ Boma. :)

Thanks!
Jon

We just ate there on Friday morning. I don't think you'll be disappointed. They have all the standard breakfast items, including made to order omelettes, plus some different things. There was a type of curry and along with oatmeal, there was quinoa and another type of hot cereal (I can't recall the name of it). The French toast was very good. A good variety of fresh fruit and pastries, even cornbread. I guess that goes along with the African theme. There was a juice they give you first thing which, if I remember correctly, was a mixture of orange juice, mango, and pineapple juices. It was very good.

We had PSA's for yesterday at 10:30, our last day there, but we didn't keep them because the kids went off to do their own thing in the morning. If I were to do it over again, I would have made the breakfast reservations early on the last day because I would have liked to have eaten there again.

We ate dinner at Boma on Sunday and it was one of the best meals we had all week long.

Just go there hungry!:p

I am soooooo siked! Just booked 2 nights at AKL Deluxe Savanna! I am toying with the idea of bumping us up to COncierige but concerned they wont have a Savanna view, since that cant be garenteed (sp sorry)

Sooooooo do you think I should just keep the reservation as it is.... then when we check in, see if there are any savanna views concierge level and upgrade on the spot.... or rebook now and hope for the best??

We really want the best of both worlds..... Concierge and Views since we are not planning on leaving the resort at all!

What to do........... what to do..........

laurabearz,

If you request a concierge non-smoking room you are pretty much guaranteed to get a savannah view room. The concierge staff does a lot to make sure you get the savannah view room. I haven't read about anyone not getting a savannah view room that requested non-smoking.

I would change to concierge now and request non-smoking/savannah view. (provided you actually want a non-smoking room)
:D

Thanks for the tip..... of course now I am second guessing the whole Savanna view thing..... and thinking a main pool view would be sweet also, since chances are I will be in the room a lot with baby Charlie and would then be able to at least wave at my girls and DH down at the pool, from time to time!

what to do......... what to do.......... lol

Welp....... I solve my "I really want a Savanna View andConcierge garenteed" problem this morning......

I changed our reservation to a 1 bedroom Suite!

Last night as I was rocking Charlie (at 130 am and 330 am and 530 am) I kept thinking how in the heck will I be able to allow the others to sleep, all while sharing one room.... I kept picturing Charlie and I hanging out in the bathroom all night....... not good.

Soooooooo, I called first thing this morning and they had availiblity for the 1 bedroom suite! Problem solved. Of course it is a bit more money (okay a lot more money lol) but we are not doing the parks this trip and plan on using our room a lot, I think it is worth the splurge.

We are super duper totally siked now!

Still havent told the kids.....

Thanks everyone for your help!!!
