Disneyland Reopening Speculation Superthread

More ongoing work at DL:

I wonder if this means the green spaces around the DLH (and the others?) will be converted to fake grass (“green carpet”) or landscaped differently entirely... I always loved how lush and tropical DLH felt. I know California is pretty brutal to anything requiring water, but the hotels did an amazing job making you feel like you were in a lush tropical paradise or northern forest :-/

I called Disney Travel this morning and the CM told me that Disney is currently taking reservations for Paradise Pier and GCH starting on 9/16. The Disneyland Hotel is taking reservations starting 10/1. No guarantee of the resorts opening (of course) but you can make a hotel only reservation for those dates.
That was the case prior to today. Did you try to make a res at GCH/PPH for the last two weeks of Sept? I think your CM would have been in for a surprise if they tried.

Local radio last night was speculating that the State wants to wait until a couple weeks after Labor Day weekend to see if there is a spike. They don't want to allow a bunch of things to open and have the holiday all at the same time because then they would be unable to determine what led to the increase in cases (if there is one). While that seems overly cautious, that also seems like a good thing for the parks. You don't want to see the state close down the parks if the holiday is what caused the increase. That still puts an opening towards the end of the month - fingers crossed the numbers don't spike.

I work for a hospital system about 25 miles from DLR. We are hearing the exact same thing and following similar guidance from the CDPH and county DPH. Our COVID numbers are waaaay down but we are worried about this weekend and the 2 week incubation to follow. I think more things will open mid to late September based on this assessment.

understandable but then there's columbus day wknd, then veterans day & the big thanksgiving week..at that point, one can argue nothing can or should open...which SUCKS!

Exactly. I've also never known Labor Day to be this big "gathering" type holiday anyway. Do people typically do that? For us growing up it was always the last day before school started so we were at home or out doing last minute school shopping. Now, it's like 2 weeks into the school year so it's just a "Monday off." We used to go to DL but the last couple years have just been too crowded.

We are also expecting a MAJOR heat wave state wide this weekend which I presume will keep most people at home, in the AC. I think the worry about this weekend is super overblown.

...

We never do anything over Labor Day.... although last year we were at Disneyland! We checked in Saturday and left Monday night. It was packed on Saturday, Sunday was lighter and Monday was a dream. We were supposed to be there this weekend- Sunday through Tuesday. I hate you covid! Blah!

So in regards fo Disneyland, if I want to book a room, there are currently no discounts correct? So it’s rack rate or bust?

Bars are not supposed to be open yet in SD county. Are they open?

I've been checking daily -- I guess no word yet about reservation through the end of September? I checked the Disneyland website and tried to see if they are allowing bookings at the GCH for this weekend and it looks like these dates are blocked out

I'll wait for DVC to cancel my room, because if by some miracle they open the resort DH and I would go just to have a vacation and I have banked points I'm looking to use.

Turning my sights to Columbus Day weekend now.
Just looked, my Sept 24th reservation looks like it wont be happening. Next up, Oct 1....

We have always gone Labor Day weekend. It has always been super busy. I think a lot of people take it as an end of the summer vacation.

When we have seen that sign in the past, they have been reseeding grass areas.

No longer can book hotels for Sept....

Obviously not DL. But maybe Newsom didn't want this? But not sure what he will do when it comes to Christmas when people are known to travel...

Some (slightly) promising news from this article in the SF Chronicle, which is discussing Bay Area counties, but I assume would apply to all counties in California:
Orange County met all Red criteria before the switch to the color coding. I could speculate as to why they were assigned purple, but it would only be just that - speculation. It's tempting to think it has something to do with the ongoing discussions with the theme parks, but San Diego County is Red and Legoland and Sea World are not allowed to open right now either.

I just rebooked for the following weekend 9/26-27 (these are using DVC points which will expire at end of January). And I'll waitlist some October weekends just in case.
I just took my points from my cancelled Labor Day booking and booked the same weekend (25-27) on the off chance they open. I've been waitlisted for Columbus Day weekend and Halloween since my Spring Break reservation was cancelled. Even if the parks open, given that they weren't going to open the hotels til a few weeks after the parks in July, I don't expect to actually be able to stay at the VGC, but tying up those points while I wait for any kind of real news is a low-cost-opportunity gambit.

it was explained why OC was initially assigned purple - they did not have the two weeks of red metrics to be assigned red. They will move to red on Tuesday.
