Disneyland Reopening Speculation Superthread

How early are they normally sending out cancellations on Thursdays?
Anytime from now through the end of the afternoon is when Thurs cancellation news drops. Actually cancellationing of the affected reservations can occur today out to a couple weeks from today.

I’m going to be super mad if Newsom miraculously gives them the green light to open, and they do before 9/30, and I could’ve moved my promotional rate from early September to late September. The cast member who called me strongly insinuated they wouldn’t be open before 9/30. Yes, I know they don’t know anything, but still. 😡

Sorry I’m just super frustrated they wouldn’t honor the promotional rate after 9/30..... two trips rescheduled and they couldn’t even do that. I just don’t agree with how they’ve handled this.

Yea, I'm with you on that one. I have been carrying over 2 reservations from the middle of March and late April on the promotional rate. So they've had over $1200 of my money interest-free for about 9 months now. I figured they would throw those in that same boat a bone.

Executives from Disney, Universal and SeaWorld said California theme parks were 'ready to roll' during a theme park roundtable in Orlando on Wednesday, Aug. 26 led by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

I hadn't seen this coverage posted from yesterday, but I may have missed it. Posting a couple extra links since they have different quotes and OCR has a free article limit. I'm speculating, but I wonder if roundtable was timed to coincide with a possible Friday guidance release mentioned upthread.

Some interesting news. The Governor is being ordered to respond to the lawsuit against him re: school closures.

He must respond by Friday.

This could have interesting implications with other business sectors if the courts rule in favor of the parents/schools on this one.

ETA: They are finally calling him out on his "science and data" stance on all the closures and asking him to justify the decision, since it goes against the actual science and data.

That was an interesting read... Fri will be a busy day...

I logged in to check my bookings for September to find my Jet Blue flight from PDX to LGB was canceled. I never even got any notification! I'm waiting until Thursday to see about rebooking. I figure I have 24 hours to cancel and I am worried if they announce an opening of the park ticket prices will shoot up.
Then again I hate the idea of booking yet another flight that will likely be cancelled. So torn!

When they announced the opening that never happened, how much lead time was there?

P.S. I accidentally put this on the Hawaii closure thread last night. I am such a dork and they probably think I am crazy. LOL.

I bet there is some scrambling going on in Sacramento today. I wouldn't be surprised if he drops the 14 day requirement to reopen schools once counties come off the watchlist, and he may be rethinking some of the reopening guidelines set to be released tomorrow in light of the threat of more lawsuits from other business sectors.

I had mentioned a few posts ago. I wonder if sectors such as theme parks decide to fight the closures if they have to still be closed. Especially now since the numbers are getting under control. Plus theme parks in other states that are open have shown that it can be done safely.

Well, DVC cancelled my VGC reservation for 9/17 - 9/18. I was expecting it and not surprised at all. These are 2018 banked points that expire 11/30. I am hoping I can find a way to use these points before they expire.

Re: Hawaii closure thread. It's all good. I accidentally put a "speculation" on the main "we only take facts here" thread a couple of days ago. You are not at all crazy! Have a fantastic day linzjane88!!:wave2:

Haha, OK. I guess nobody has voted us off the island yet! 😁

As crazy as it may sound I think Theme Parks following all the current Safety Protocols (distancing, mask wearing, sanitation, outdoor dining, etc) are probably safer than schools opening. On the other hand I firmly believe that schools opening are more important than Theme Parks and other entertainment venues.

That week sounds donezo then. (I sincerely hope DVC does something for you about that expiration 😔)

That’s how I feel as well! We for sure need to be focusing on getting the virus under control enough so kids can get back to school (in person). But with that said, school can be so much more complex and can take longer to get safety precautions in place. Theme parks not so much.

That's pretty much what I was thinking. I'm the wife of a teacher, so I know how detailed it's been to get our district going on our in-school plan. Schools vs Theme Parks.....yeah, those are two different things run by two different groups of people. Can't the school people work on reopening up at the same time the theme park people work on their reopening? I don't know if school re openings really need to be in the same category as theme parks. :)

Not to stress you out, but with JetBlue both discontinuing the PDX route and also leaving Long Beach in October, I might suggest not waiting too long to rebook. It's very possible flight options for LGB will be scarce for September, if not already unavailable.

Oh yeah, schools and theme parks are in whole other categories. Most school openings have been a mess already. I think logically we all know how different these scenarios are.

I worry more about Newsom is concerned more with appearances than reality on that front. “Disneyland opens before schools” isn’t a good headline but we all know that it’s much easier to open up DL than an elementary school right now.

Using the model that is WDW, I think DL could absolutely be opened right now and the schools could apply a lot of the measures there to get them open too. Unfortunately, in CA, it seems like we are being driven a lot more than FL by a "misery loves company" approach. The thinking goes, how can you even think about going to an amusement park during a GLOBAL PANDEMIC? Well, we did. It was safe, Covid did not spread, and mentally we are in a much better place now.

Notice I said WDW is a MODEL, not lessons learned. "Lessons learned" implies that there was some Covid spread, WDW made adjustments and moved on. That's not what happened. The measures implemented in WDW go well beyond what it takes to contain Covid and it works. There will need to be some differences in CA due to the make up of the typical guest. WDW has a lot more vacationers that spend the whole week there while DL is nearly entirely locals coming for the day. Different, yes, but I am confident Disney has already thought this through.

And I'll shy away from discussing schools, but shame on CA for not taking what WE KNOW works at WDW and applying it here. We sat indoors and ate in two restaurants - that can be done safely, we sat in several theaters and watched shows, that can be done safely. Do you really think getting a haircut is riskier than either of those things? No way. Schools are not much different either. You just have to see the safety measures as your ticket to getting back to normal and be diligent about doing it. Wear the masks, use the hand sanitizer, keep your distance, wash your hands, get your temperature checked daily, etc. Do those things or STAY HOME. It's simple and it works. There is no need to argue about it or live in fear.
