Disney World with Autism Trip report! We survived

Finally finishing this!

Our last day was good. It started with a promise from the night before. During EMH the wait for Splash Mountain was 40 minutes. My son can't wait 40 minutes not even at the beginning of a day, so that late at night forget it, and they were not letting us use the GAC. My son started crying so we told him it was closed and that tomorrow after breakfast it would be our first ride. He calmed down and a meltdown was avoided.

He woke up on day 8 asking for Splash Mountain. Our plan for the day was breakfast at CP then spend the rest of the day at MK before heading to the airport.

Breakfast at CP was great as usual. Off to Splash Mountain. As we headed over that bridge where you can stand to get splashed I realized the logs were all coming down empty. My husband checked his watch and the park had been open for about 15 minutes. I knew this wasn't good. We got to the entrance and my son is bouncing with excitement. A CM told us the ride was down right now but you could still get a FP. FP doesn't help a kid who doesn't understand why he couldn't ride last night and now after being promised for hours, he can't ride it now. So we managed to coax him away and got out of that area in general. We went over to HM and then back over to POTC. I asked one of the friendlier pirates there if there was anyway they could find out if Splash was running yet and explained the situation. She made a call and found out yes it was running. WOO HOO

We went and got the poor kid on Splash, did BTMRR, then Splash again.

We headed back into Adventureland. My son is not high functioning, probably somewhere between low and moderate. His focus and attention are severely lacking, but he has come so far. This was the first time we ever considered letting him in shows and the big challenge was the Pirate Tutorial. Was it too long and too much direction to follow??? Guess who was the first kid picked? I was so excited I was shaking. He did just as well as 2 of the kids who go picked with him. They didn't speak English so they didn't get some of the directions either. Had Jack told him "run away" he would have but he said "flee" and my poor boy has no idea what that word means. But he did great. It was one of my favorite parts of the trip.

After that we had a Dole Whip Float and my son asked to go "on the guitar ride." Hey, it's his trip right? So we left MK and headed over to DHS and got in 2 rides each on RNRC and ToT, had lunch and headed to the airport.

Trip over :sad1:

I really only took pictures during the pirate tutorial. I was actually tired of taking them by then and just wanted to enjoy our last hours.

Thanks for reading!

I just found your trip report, and glad I did, enjoyed reading it. Good to see you had a great time at Disney!

Thanks for the great encouraging trip report! My oldest son Caleb sounds much like your cute guy. We are having our third trip in Feb and WDW is one of the first places that the four of us can enjoy 100% together. Did I understand that there are characters around the countries at Epcot we have yet to make it pass mexico:).

Just read your TR today....read it all!! :goodvibes I got sucked in lol I loved all the pictures, especially all of those great character pics!!! Looks like you guys had a great time. I think we might try hoop de doo next time after reading over your report and seeing some pictures of the show/dinner

Great TR!

Your son is a little cutey! I love that picture of him showing his smile to Mary Poppins. Sounds like your son has made a lot of strides, and it sounds like you had a terrific trip.

Hi there! This is Marc from Facebook. I just finished reading your Trip Report at work. I laughed out loud when I got to the picture of Paul drinking the Beverly. Everyone looked at me wondering what I was laughing at.

As I told you on Facebook, last week was the first visit to WDW for my 2 autistic nieces Sarah and Megan. It was definitely a learning experience and stressful at times, but I can't wait to take them again. I hope to go back with them in the Spring.

I live on Long Island too and I'm familiar with the Long Island Ducks and Quackerjack. I love going to those games, it's such a family oriented atmosphere, affordable, and close by.

Thanks for sharing your trip with us. I'm going to show this thread to my sister as well as your YouTube video of the trip.
