Disney World Credit Card Fraud has happened to me

I now call Chase when I am headed for Disney and tell them the dates of travel and general location. This last trip was both Disney and the Tampa area to visit friends. My son has a card on my account and he would still be using the card in RI so I asked that they put that information on the account. It saved having the account shut down which they have done in the past. A quick call reversed it but it is still a nuisance. They called and emailed about a fraud alert when someone tried to use the card for purchases in PA and Calif. the same day. I thanked the person and got the same response Chuck S did that many people are upset when they call and say it is an invasion of their privace :confused3 I will be heading to Alaska on a cruise next month and Chase will get the call before I go.

I find it interesting when people think a company actually protecting them is a pain when they lock out your card. But after being a victom of identity theft believe me this is not a pain. Trying to get collection agencies to stop calling, getting credit agencies to clean up your credit, trying to get police departments to actually make you a police report, etc. etc. etc. is worse than having to call the credit card company when you want to make a big charge.

I think it will actually get worse the more the banks have to pay out because of identity theft.

I noticed some fraudulent charges on my CHase Disney Visa card a few years ago. Someone had gotten my number somehow (can't remember if it was following a trip to WDW or not) and made some charges to on-line dating services or matchmaking services, mostly from the Seattle area. I'm from the midwest. Wow, did I have some explaining to do to my husband! Anyway, I called Chase and they took the charges right off and went after whoever was doing the charging.

I just found a CC fraud charge on my Canadian TD VISA card. I have called the CC company and reported the fraud, and yes, the charge was to Kissimmee. They went on a shopping spree of about $500. I think they made a copy.

I got the charges reversed.

So who can I report to at Disney? I went in December. It looks like these folks waited until I might not notice. Of course, I haven't checked my card on-line for months, and but I just shopped for Oct. and wanted to check my airfare. I really only left my CC at the desk at SSR. How could they possibly make a copy?!

Well.... The CC company is not looking out for YOU. They are looking out for THEMSELVES. They are liable for fraudulent charges, with the possible exception of the first $50, but even that can be argued away.

As far as identity theft, we joined Life Lock. That just may be the best $220/year we ever spent. :smokin:

With all the international visitors at WDW that wouldn't really be all that helpful.

Ask a Canadian for their ZIP code next time your talking to one...
(Be warned, you'll probably hear them muttering as you walk away 'stupid American')... :lmao:

Personally the ZIP code thing is a HUGE pain for Canadians - anytime I buy gas in the states I have to go into the store - delaying everyone else looking to buy gas.

True we have the same problem being from the UK! Also if we do not tell some CC companies that we are going on vacation then they block our card as the US does not use the chip and pin system for sales, ie entering the 4 digit code, which is personal to each user and card.

Claire ;)

It is quite possible that there are organized groups stealing numbers at Disney.

I think it might also be just as possible that a lot more people, in "vacation mode", are a little too relaxed about security at big vacation places like Disney.

If I could have a dime for every person I have seen walking away from a purchase and tossing their credit card transaction receipt in the nearest garbage can, I would be a wealthy man. :)

Not true. The CC companies have no incentive to reduce fraud. Actually the more fraud there is the more money they make. They have the ability to stop fraud but as long as it adds to their bottom line, why would they. They don't pay a penny for a fraudulent charge, the merchant who accepted the fraudulent charge pays. On top of that the merchant pays the CC company a fee for each reversed charge. Those fees add up to millions and millions of dollars per year for the CC company.

I was informed before the trip and am never relaxed when it comes to my credit cards. As for the receipts, they no longer can include the CC number so they are worthless.

Total bogus charges $600, all have been reversed. Most were gas station charges, one was Walmart and one was a nice dinner at an Italian restaurant. Chase did a great job handling this situation, cancelling my card and getting me a new one.

Sorry to correct you but the Merchant does not pay for a fradulent charge unless the card was not swiped and the proper percautions were not taken which are the security code an imprint and a signiture or some other means of proving you had the card in your hand. If the merchant does not do one of these than IMOP they deserve the charge-back. But in most cases even with all of this missing you can still get paid if it has not happened before and you have a fair volume. As far as fees paid by the merchant and to the credit card company there are anywhere from 4-5 different companies that get a piece... small idea Visa gets .25 per transaction just for their logo being on the card the rest is complicated as it depends on the banks it goes through the volume of the store and the type of card, if it has rewards and what type of rewards.
And yes the merchant will pay the fees on a fradulant charge.

I'm glad to hear that for you. My CC company seems to be the same. They told me not to pay the fraudulent charges, and they would be sending me new cards.

Having read the issues from these boards, I was very careful with my CC, stored them in the safe, and only swiped at the hotel. This past trip I stayed at SSR, and BCV. The only places I presented the CC's. So, I know it came from my Disney stay.

It's disheartening to find this happening, but I'm glad there are checks to protect the unsuspecting.

We had our CCs that we used for our rooms copied during 2 WDW trips last year. During the process of cleaning up our account we were told by Chase that Wal-Mart and Raceway gas stations would be picking up the charge backs. The Chase rep told me that it doesn't cost Chase a penny. She said that Wal-Mart considers it the cost of doing business and that very few of the hundreds of thousands of CC fraud reports are investigated.

Two days ago, when I opened my statement I found 5 fraudulent charges all on the same day all at gas stations near Orlando. $310 worth! :headache: Called Chase right away and girl told me that the day after the 5 charges, there were 2 more attempts to use the card again at gas stations. Chase declined those 2 as suspicious. Funny thing is I bought groceries 5 days after that and that charge went through. I agree with the poster who said they don't consider locking your card an inconvenience. Had they declined my grocery purchase, I would have known something was fishy weeks before I got my bill.:sad2:

I too was at Disney in January and asked the girl I spoke to at Chase, why now? It's almost 4 months later? Our cards were not stolen or lost? How do they do this? She said they wait and steal lots of numbers and then have cards made. Yes...they have that capability! Only thing she did not know was HOW they steal the number. I would like to know so I can be more careful if anyone has a clue.

Anyway, she felt they were probably through with my card since the 2 declines but she still had to close the account and open another one. Really, really ironic thing is that we are going to Disney on Saturday. :lmao: I told her our dates so we don't have any problems with our new cards. She even express mailed the cards to us so we would have them in time. I like Chase! :thumbsup2

I was told that the crook has the ability to swipe the card on a electronic device that stores the info. and it is not very big.

I saw a story once were they placed a device at an ATM and made it look like part of the setup. It was installed on a friday night and picked up before monday morning. Not only did they get a lot of cc# but also lots of pin #s.

Has anyone seen the commercial where the waiter is bringing back the cc to the customer he passes it off to the guy sitting behind the customer and he swipes the card and hands it back to the waiter. I understand it happens that fast.

I am almost tempted to hand my card to the waiter and then follow him to the register.

Can you look on your Jan. Statement and see where you used the card? Perhaps if we find a common location we can provide that info to Disney.
Mine was used at the following:

SSR front desk
RESTAURANTOSAURUS
PLAZA ICE CREAM PAR
PINOCCHIO VILLAGE H

That was it, they grabbed my info at one of those 4 places.

My sister had her CHASE visa hijacked at Disney in the first week of Feb.
She used her card only at:

BCV
Alamo

Am I getting paranoid or am I starting to see a pattern on these boards with credit card theft in the Disney area and Chase visa :confused3

Just out of curiosity, are these the new cards with the chip in them, or the regular cards that have a mag stripe, only?
