Jessica,

I wasn't seriously suggesting Legoland. I believe it's truly geared for kids under about 12. We have annual passes simply because they're cheap, we live nearby, and have a 3 year old. However, they do have pretzel breadsticks.

When we meet, I need to pick your brain about DVC. I've done the presentation, am interested, but still on the fence. Of course, the current cruise incentive makes the proposition that much more appealing.

Now if we could just get the WDW meal plan in CA I'd be happy.

Cari:

I think those sound like fun ideas, but who would be the judges and would there be a prize? I don't know if this would be too difficult. What does everyone think?

Regarding your comment for the logo vote - let me see what I can do and I will get back to you. If it's something I can do I will stop the vote, add your idea, and then re-start the vote. If I can't do it though, then the voting will go on as-is (unless you are able to create your logo idea yourself). Let me see what I can do, I should get back to you tomorrow night! :thumbsup2

Attention Everyone: Whether you're brand new to the board or have been participating from the beginning - we want to hear from you! Private Reception Info:
I have spoken with a wonderful group gathering's cast member at Disney, and this is the information I have so-far for a private reception. Also, I have some personal opinion's I will share below. I'd like to also hear what everyone else thinks. If a bunch of people want to do something and some people don't, then I will just start a running list and we would split the costs by the number of people actually participating.

Two of the things I requested she will not have pricing on until it gets closer to the sailing. They are: a private movie showing inside the Buena Vista Theater for our group, and a private bingo session for our group. When I get the pricing info on these I will let everyone know. Of these two I think the private movie showing would be better as we would have to provide our own prizes for bingo. But again, I will post the pricing when I find out.

What I do have pricing on are these things:

  • Retaining a room at a specific time/day for our group - $0
  • Disney photographer on-hand for a private photo session - $85 Note that photos would be purchased separately, so you would not be obligated to buy a picture.
  • Characters for our private reception (to take photos with and interact with) - $550 per character per 30 minute session.
  • The only "food option" that is at all affordable is cake. With the number of people we currently have, we would be looking at $3.50 per person for cake for our private reception. (No drinks included, drink packages are really expensive).
  • I'm not going to list all of the food options and pricing, but I will say they have everything from hot hourderves to "deluxe hourderves", seafood platters, cheese/fruit/veggie platters, various desserts, wine/beer, premium bar, and soda/juice packages. These packages range from $13-$18 per person all the way up to $89 per platter.

With all of that said, this is my opinion:
I think that the reception stuff is WAY too expensive - and a bit maddening considering you could otherwise have free soda and food on board the ship. I get that they would have to staff your party which would cost them money, but the prices they are wanting to charge are OUTRAGEOUS. I would be up for a private movie showing, depending on what they say the cost is. I would also be up for a private photo session with a character, depending on how much it turned out to be per person (how many people wanted to do it, how many characters, and how long we wanted each character). However, my husband and I are only 2 people - families of 4 or 5 would end up paying a lot more. For instance, doing a private party with cake (bring your own drink) including a private photo session and 1 hour with a character (or 30 mins with 2 characters) would be about $16 per person. For families like ours that's not so bad, but for larger families you'd be paying $65 - $80+!

So, I think other people should voice there opinions to see what we think about this.

That said, we have done a lot of research on other people's boards and it says that most DISboards groups unofficially meet in one of the lounges the day of boarding the ship. No matter what happens with doing a private reception or not, I think this is a good idea for us because it will give us an opportunity to meet and exchange room numbers for anyone on a guarantee status or that was upgraded last minute. Considering a private reception would be an additional (and unnecessary) cost, I don't think it's something we should try and make happen. If everyone is off the bat 100% wanting to do something like this, then no biggie. But I don't know that it's an issue we should push.

Anyhow, if as many people as possible could voice their (your) opinions on this, that would be great! Again, I will let everyone know when I get the rest of the pricing - this is just the info I have right now.

Ditto. I can't see paying for something we could otherwise get elsewhere without an additional charge (I'm not allowed to say "free" as DW will remind me that we are already paying for it in ur cruise fare).

I'm up for meeting on the first day informally in a lounge.

Sue - Thanks for the recipe! What kind of Cabo Wabo do you use? I've only tried the stuff in the blue bottle but I don't recall what it was. This sounds like something good to try on our next campout. Let me know if you ever find a good Lava Flow recipe. It's my favorite drink but I only get it on cruise ships. I've found a few recipes but they always turn out lousy at home so I've given up.

Pam - Hello and welcome to the group. It looks like we'll be neighbors on the ship. Happy planning! :thumbsup2

Tonya - That is a really cool looking FE. Great job! Did you just cut the fabric to size and tape it in the back? Were the letters iron-on? We have one of the original basic store-bought FE's but I'd love to plus it. We have no sewing skills either. I'm not even sure we could safely handle scissors. :headache:

Cari - What about putting our eventual logo on Cafepress or Zazzle? Has anyone here done that? Someone set this up for us on a past cruise. That way we could get the logo on shirts, bags, mugs, or whatever. I was told you are required to make a profit but the people who set it up only added $1 to each sale so they could put the items up there. That way we would only have to pay a dollar more than the product costs. Just a thought.

I don't know if there is another meet planned but we were going to have one in September when we go down the week after Labor Day after the Half Marathon. We haven't ironed out any details yet but we will be in the parks September 7 - 10 and were going to try to meet up with some of the locals one day.

Kris - I used to work for GIA in Carlsbad, right across the street from Legoland. Some of our offices had views of the rides so I always got a kick out of peeking out the window at them. I really miss it down there. You live in a beautiful area. We are also DVC members living in CA so let me know if there are any questions I can answer for you too.

Jessica - What? No love for Legoland? I'm crushed! I've been there three times and all visits were before we even had a child. I LOVE this park. Maybe most of it is nostalgia for me since I played with Legos as a kid. I really love the attention to detail in the recreated cities and landmarks. They also have Dragon, my favorite kiddie roller coaster. The price makes it nearly impossible to justify adults going by themselves though so I can understand you having never been there. If I wasn't such a geek who is desperate to ride every roller coaster I can, I probably wouldn't have been there yet either.

Another fan of Le Cellier's pretzel bread here. I also love the pretzel bread at Biergarten.

I agree with Cathy, I think the prices are a bit high for a lot of the private reception options. Thank you so much for looking into this. If the group wants to do something, we would most likely participate as long as it doesn't break us. I think it's great that they let us reserve a room for a specific date/time for free. I like the idea of a character at our reception. At the hefty $550, we would need a lot of people to make it affordable and with only 30 minutes, I don't know if we are going to have much time for that many people to meet the character for photos. What do you think?

I wonder if they would let us reserve a section or large group of tables for a buffet or dining room breakfast meet one morning.

Tonya, I hadn't added you to page 2 yet, so I added you there as well. :thumbsup2 Also - Ryan and I have photoshop & GIMP (graphic design programs), but we are not able to change the words. I recommend that you post on the Creative DISigns board (http://www.disboards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=105) and ask if they can help. There are professional graphic design people who do stuff for free because they love Disney so much! It's work a shot ;)

Thanks.. I just posted there. :)

I know exactly where you're talking about. And I agree with it being a beautiful area, which is why I can't get my wife to move anywhere else. She was born here and won't leave the area.

I may need to pick your brain in the near future. I'm just trying to figure out the economic advantages of being DVC members. We do a couple of Thursday, Friday, Saturday trips a year so I have to figure out the points and the nightly cost breakdown to determine if there will be any savings.

Being a DVC member is more about the long term rather than the short term, and it's "worth" in the examples you're giving would be based on long term as well (and whether or not you've done a payment plan for the purchase price or paid it all at the time of purchase). For instance...

Ryan and I are in in for the long-term, and that's how/why it makes sense to us. Our ownership is almost 50 years and we did a payment plan for the purchase amount. After our purchase price is paid off, we will get to stay about a week and a half a year at Animal Kingdom Lodge in a savannah view room for only the cost of annual dues (about $700/yr). Who can say for the next 50 years that they'll be able to stay at Animal Kingdom for a week and a half for only $700?!?!? You couldn't stay there in that type of room for that amount of time (only 2 people) for under $4K - $5K! On top of that, there are so many other options and things you can do with the membership. Included in those things is the fact that it is deedable/transferable, so you can live it to your kids/grandkids etc. in your will. You could also gift it to someone. For instance, if your daughter gets married and wants her honeymoon to be at WDW but she can't afford it, you could gift her your points that year and she could have her resort room FREE! There are so many options and so many reasons to have it that I couldn't say enough good things about it.

With that said, it is expensive in the short term. For instance, Ryan and I have monthly payments for the purchase price, so technically for these first few years while we're paying that, we are technically paying more per year that it would cost to just book the trip at a moderate resort or something using cash. But again - we are not looking at it that way, we look at the benefit of being able to go for only $700/yr for the next 45+ years.

As far as incentives - they are nice, aren't they?!?!? When Ryan and I purchased we got "developer points" which we used to take a cruise for FREE! Everything also depends on the way you use your points. For instance, Ryan and I were able to go to WDW 4 times in 2008 because of our DVC ownership! With the membership you get a discount on annual passes, and with an annual pass you can get a food discount card. So, we purchased annual passes - combine the annual pass with the food discount with the "free" resort stay and it made it 100% possible! We had to pay for airfare each time, but found good airfare deals. In the end, we could NEVER have done that if we weren't DVC members!

If you purchase, tell your guide you're being referred by Ryan and Jessica McIntosh from Riverside, CA. If you have a referral, generally both the new member and the existing member get something! In the past it's been developer points for the new member and $200+ for the existing member! (That's how Ryan and I got the developer points when we signed up, we got a free cruise from developer points and the person that referred us got like $250 or so!!!!)

Others will probably have more input, but there's a start of an explanation for you. Hope it helps! :thumbsup2

P.S. Remember that where you purchase will make a difference in what your incentives are. Also, where you purchase is where you get an 11 month booking window at. If you are wanting to go a few times a year to Disneyland as opposed to WDW and your DL trips will not be decided 11 month prior to your travel date, then it would probably make more sense for you to purchase at one of the cheapest DVC resorts and just use your 7 month booking window for DGC. Does that make sense? For instance, if DGC is $130 per point and Saratoga is only $85 per point purchase price, it is only worth paying the $130 to actually own at DGC if you NEED the 11 month booking window. If you go last minute, then it doesn't matter where you own, you could use your Saratoga points to book at Grand Californian 7 months prior to your trip date.

if this is too confusing let me know; I'm sure someone else can help explain!

It sounds like you are considering using DVC at DLR rather than WDW which are two very different situations. Booking villas at the Grand Californian (VGC), on the weekends, with short notice, is (reportedly) pretty difficult. It will depend a lot of what type of room you want (studio, 1 bedroom, 2 bedroom). VGC has a limited number of rooms, around 50 2 bedroom lock-offs (1 bedroom + studio), which means that the actual number of rooms/configurations is constantly changing. It sounds like one bedroom villas are the easiest to get and that the studios go quickly. The points per night at VGC are also very expensive when compared to most of the other DVC resorts. For an example (studio/1 bedroom/2 bedroom)(most common view type in choice season):
Animal Kingdom Lodge (Savanna View) 110/217/295
Bay Lake Towers (Lake View) 121/240/313
Beach Club 105/211/279
Saratoga Springs 105/192/251
Grand Californian 143/290/385

The points per night are weighted higher for weekend stays so Thursday-Sunday (3 nights) twice a year in choice season (which is the 2nd least expensive season) would eat up 150 points.

If you can plan you Disneyland trips well in advance (more than 7 months) then it could work out well for you, and if you can shift your trips off off the weekends then it would work our even better.

I personally think DVC is great, but I also don't see a tremendous value in the Grand Californian DVC property due to the outrageous point costs and the booking difficulties. DVC really rewards the members at WDW with very large room discounts (per point vs dollar cost at the same resort) and large AP discounts ($100 off the pass cost vs about $30 off at Disneyland).

Tonya or any other crafty type person, I have a question...Would I use something like a "Heat n Bond" type product to make my own FE??? It seems pretty simple to use. I have been looking at e-bay at all the different Disney pieces of fabric and really would like to try my hand at making my own. It is weird but I have done embroidery when I was younger but I just don't think hand sewing would be good enough for a FE. But this stuff looks like it would be strong enough to hold everything on.
Back to e-bay...

For us, we're much more likely to go to DLR two or more times a year for short weekend trips than WDW because of distance, airfare, etc. Taking off more than a Friday is difficult for my DW as she likes the longer vacations elsewhere. However, we usually go during the slower seasons (October and May).

Kris

Kris-don't forget that you can use your DVC points to stay at the other 2 hotels @ DLR. We were @ PP last month. It wasn't a studio @ the Grand but it was just fine. We stayed @ DLH in April and other than the construction, it was fine, too. The thing I don't like is the fact that they have taken away being able to stay at the Concierge level any more and that if you can't get into a DVC unit, you cannot use points to stay at the Grand CA, either. I love that hotel and am a little upset by both changes since we joined.
Something that we weren't aware of when we bought our first contract was the breaking the contracts into smaller amounts. Instead of the 270 point contract we bought @ SSR, we could have broken it into smaller groups. Basically, it is easier to resell them in smaller contracts. We looked into selling this one and it is very difficult. It is easy to sell say a 50 point or 100 point contract. Make sure you ask about it, if you decide to buy. :)

Steve-I had bought the Reposado Cabo Wabo. The guy at BevMo told me they changed the labels and that was the blue one. I can't wait to go see the place in January! :woohoo: And the Lava Flow was my drink @ Chevy's a few years back. I don't know if it is the same but it was yummy!

BTW, WELCOME to all who have joined us on the board! :grouphug: Jump in here and there so we know you are still out there. We are a chatty group so don't feel you have to post all the time like some of us. I am so happy to see there will be some boys that are around my son's age (almost 11 when we sail). It was getting to look like it would have been all girls! Not that he minds playing with girls but he is very stuck in the "that is girls stuff" attitude. I barely got him to walk through the castle the last time we were there. :wizard:

October and May both fall into the choice season so 150 points a year is what you would need for those long weekends twice a year.

I just took a quick look and DVC is selling Grand Californian points for $97/point ($112 - $15 discount) for 160 points minimum. (Some properties have a 100 point minimum buy-in, but that does not appear to be the case for Grand Californian). If you choose to finance through Disney the discount is sometimes applied to the down-payment (generally 10%) so you could make a purchase with no money out of pocket.

There are also some resales out there. I found a 160 point contract going for $89 per point, but 120 of this years points have already been used. The other resales I have seen are in the high $90's. Something to keep in mind if you are considering buying resale are the closing costs ($400-500). If you buy direct through Disney they cover the closing costs, but if you buy resale you will have to add that to the cost.

Technically you don't have to buy Grand Californian points, you could buy resale at one of the older properties for much less per point and use them at the Grand Californian, you just lose the booking priority. Your reservation window would be 7 months instead of 11 months. Saratoga Springs is the best resale option, the contract is good for 44 more years and 150 or 160 point contracts can be had for $70/point. May and October are in the "off-season" so you may be OK at the 7 month window.

The annual dues for Grand Californian are currently $3.94/point (they generally increase around 3% per year) so around $630 per year. For Saratoga Springs they are around $4.46/point.

So, with all that having been said it all comes down to how important staying at the Grand Californian is to you. For the price of the annual dues alone you could stay 6 nights every year in one of the adjacent non-Disney hotels. It goes without saying that the Grand Californian is better than the adjacent hotels, but it also requires a $16,000 buy-in.

There was a promotion going on (I'm not sure if it has ended yet) where if you do an "Open House Tour" either in person or over the phone with a a reference from a member you will receive a $25 gift card and a special promotional discount. If you are interested let me know and I will dig up the information.

DVC was allowing members to book at all Disneyland Resort hotels with their point and without the $95 reservation fee prior to the Grand Californian Villas opening. DVC's policy has always been that if a hotel contains DVC villas then the regular rooms can not be booked on points so the regular Grand Californian rooms are no longer available, however, it looks like they still are not charging the $95 fee that is charged at the other locations.

One thing to keep in mind when booking non-DVC rooms is that the points become "mutated" to "reservation" points. That doesn't really mean anything unless you have to cancel or change your reservation, but if you do have to cancel then those points can't be used for DVC resorts.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the point costs for non-DVC rooms are inflated. The same 6 nights that cost 150 points at the Grand Californian will cost 192 points at the Disneyland Hotel (Standard View) and 176 points at Paradise Pier (Standard View).

With regards to the contract sizes I don't think that they allow you to break up your initial (160) contract into smaller pieces. Anything beyond your minimum bu-in of 160 could be broken into smaller contracts and should be done in 25 or 50 point increments to make it easier to sell in the future. The small contracts are worth slightly more on the resale market, but they also sell much, much quicker. A lot of 25 point contracts are sold within hours of being made available, where the larger contracts sit for weeks or months.
