Disney when you're penniless?

Maybe some people do it this way and pay it off when they get home and see the charges, versus paying up front. Who knows?

We charge everything all the time. We have a Quicken card that downloads charges onto our computer and puts them into categories. DH loves this feature as he feels it gives him control! LOL! We even charge our groceries. I never have to carry a checkbook and rarely do we need cash for anything. It is so much easier for us. We also pay it entirely off each and every month. So we never pay any interest and that is the way DH likes. And you should see our monthly charges!

I too could not & would not even consider it............I'd feel guilty on one hand & be a total nervous wreck on the other.

I like to know I have the money there, not rely on it coming in at a later date & hopefully in time.

Under the circumstances you mentioned, no I wouldnt do that.
As for charging a trip, I see nothing wrong with that as long as you know you can and will pay for it. Credit Cards are not the evil things some people make them out to be. When used correctly and intelligently, they can be a good thing.

I don't think Jesse was saying credit cards for a Disney trip is bad. As a matter of fact she said if you had NO CREDIT AT ALL.

The question was would you go without ANY money on the hopes a friend would deposit your anticipated paycheck in your bank account on the last day so you could pay your room charges.

I agree with her. That would be too scary for me and I wouldn't do it. I see no judgementalness in that opinion.

I've done it! I was young, optimistic and figured I would pay for my trip on time. I had a job and I was broke....just bought a house. So we booked a cruise on my cc and went for it. And it worked.

I have alot more responsibilities now and wouldn't do it. I think it depends on which side of the time line you're on. I took alot more chances when I was 20-something.

I WOULD DO IT AS WE ALL DO WITH BORROWING TRYING TO BEAT 2042 OR WHATEVER

When I was very young, under 25, we went to Disney with just barely enough money. And no emergency fund at all. I shudder to think of it now.

I am older and wiser and more aware of life's pitfalls now, and this is not necessarily a good thing.

I could not even consider a trip unless I had paid for everything ahead of time, and had enough money to pay for meals etc. Plus a comfortable cushion for the unforeseeables.

But I was young and foolish an believed myself invincible back then LOL

I am of mixed feelings on this.

However, I know that I would not strech myself to stay at a Deluxe resort or something.

If money is tight stay off site (Rodeway is $26 a night right now!) and keep it cheap. I have done that. That way I was not stressed about money since I was staying dirt cheap! If you wait until you can afford the Poly your kids could be grown without seeing Disney!!!LOL!!!

I went right before I quit my job without one. I had booked the room on my DVC points and already had the plane ticket. While I had PLENTY of savings to get me through it was a cheap trip. NO sitdown meals. Lots of the other tricks you use. I think I spent under $100 for a long weekend!

If you had been unemployed awhile but just started working again, were down to your last dime and had no credit, had your room prepaid, but had to wait for a pay check to be deposited on your last day of vacation to pay off your room charges, would you go?

Personally I don't think it is any of our business....what other people do....

Good Point.

It is really everyone's decision on what they want to do and unless we have walked a mile in their shoes......

Agreed. But the USA is filled with folks DROWNING in credit card debt.

My SIL just made a second motgage on her "paid for house"...to pay her ex $26,000 as a result of the divorce AND to cover $45,000 of debt. She's 50 and the note of over $500 will have to be paid until she's 65.

You would think she learned her lesson?

Nope. She's doing more remodeling and planning a trip to WDW in 3 months on her charge card!!!!

Yikes, Gladys! You would think she would have learned.

I agree, people can get themselves in major trouble with credit cards, and it does happen a lot. But on the other hand I dont think everyone that uses credit cards is going to end up that way. There is a right way to use them. Ive charged stuff, including trips(yes, I admit it ;) ) but I know that between tax refunds and DH's bonuses we will be able to pay them off within a few months. And yes, when the balance gets too high for us to be comfortable with, we stop. They work well for us. :D

My DH and I charge absolutely everything we can on our credit cards (trips, gas, groceries, you-name-it!) but I have never in my life not been able to pay the balance off in full each and every month with our normal salaries. I guess that's why they work well for us. We're both accountants and are very careful with our money. I download our activity all the time into MS Money so I always know how much is on the credit card plus I always know what we're going to have in the bank by the time the bill is due. We've never had a problem. I actually don't like using cash because we always seem to misplace the receipts or forget to ask for one and then I can't remember what the money was spent on. That drives me crazy! So, credit cards can be terrible for some people but I would never want to part with mine. We usually get a rebate of $500-600 back every year from VISA as well which is kind of nice.

Sure it is, because they expect us to cover their butts when it all falls through. I can't tell you how many people come to me with a pet emergency with some story like, "Well I can't afford this because I just bought a pool" or "... we just got back from vacation." Well guess who they expect to pay for it... me. And of course I'm a cold witch when I refuse to treat them. Well you know what... if you didn't have an emergency account or at least credit to cover unforeseen emergencies, then you couldn't afford whatever it was that you just bought! So if you pull "stuff" like that, expect to pay the consequences, which may be going without a car or air conditioner when yours breaks down, or having your pet die because you "can't afford" to take care of it. Of course, if these people actually get sick or their kids do, we all will wind up paying for it, so YES it is our business.

Oh... and I am one who will admit to charging a vacation without reservation or a bit of shame. No one else suffers from it, and I still have enough credit to cover any emergencies. For some reason, people want to attack those of us who are comfortable paying 5-20% more for our vacations (not that it will actually take anywhere near a year for me to pay off). How that is anyone's business I'll never know. I don't attack people who don't use codes and discount travel sites. However, a lot of these habitual chargers will wind up going bankrupt, which we all pay for, so YES again, that is our business.

Hmm I try not judge others because everyone regardless of what they might think are not perfect!

Hmm I try not judge others because everyone regardless of what they might think are not perfect!
but you don't have a problem making the judgement that someone thinks they're perfect?

DocRafiki...I still don't think it is anybody's business...

and hopefully before you send the client's packing with their sick animal....you try to work out a payment plan....

No cash, don't go. I can't stand worry when on vacation. However, if that is what some want to do, go for it. Life is to short. I just stress entirely too much.:hyper:

Kinda ironic - I work for a collection agency and rec'd a voicemail yesterday: "I can't make this month's payment because I'm out of town on vacation". ;) Not MY style at all...but each to their own.

I try not to judge others UNTIL/UNLESS they have a HABIT of messing up their lives financially. (Shrug) And then my opinion doesn't really matter - they have bigger problems to worry about ;)

Seriously: like Stephen's Mom, DH & I are starting to use credit cards more & more for "normal expenditures" for the rewards aspect; however, we both kept watch over our spending before, so it's rare when we carry over a balance to the next month.

Denise < --- fortunately learned her "credit" lesson at a very young age: went crazy one xmas and took her 6 months to pay it off ;)

This post just won't die. And I see it is still off topic. :)

It was never about CREDIT: GOOD or BAD?

The question was: Would you go to Disney with NO cash and NO credit cards hoping that your paycheck would be deposited by a friend on your last day so you could pay your room charges.

If saying that is taking too much of a gamble and I'd never do it is judgemental, then I guess I am.
