Trying to decide between a Disney cruise and a Royal Caribbean (it would likely be on their new ship freedom of the seas. Our boys will be 9 and 11 at the time and would to choose a ship that would be best suited to their ages.

I was just talking to my mother about RC this morning and the new ship Freedom of the Seas. We decided we wouldn't want to do it, because of its size. Yes, it does have a lot of activities and stuff to do, but 2600 people on a ship is a lot! We have done two voyager class ships and my mom said the only reason she went on those was because of the ages of my brother and me. We were both in our teens at the time (between 14 and 19) and the activities and the whole cruise was perfect for our ages. The food is decent and the service is alright.

If you have never done a Disney cruise I think your family might enjoy that more. I think Disney is a magical experience and their service is great. So, my vote is Disney, if you have never done a Disney.

We've cruised 3 times with Disney, and 4 times with RCCL.

We love both of them! Most of the time, it comes down to price. We can sail for 7 days on RCCL for the what it would cost to cruise only 3 days on DCL.

I think, considering the ages of your boys, they would love the new Freedom of the Seas!! I can't wait to go on that one myself -- I'm just waiting for the prices to drop a little bit.

The only thing I don't like about the Freedom is that it only goes on the Western itinerary. Those stops aren't great for kids that age. If you decide to do DCL, I would highly recommend the Eastern Caribbean instead. But, that's just MHO. :)

DCL and RCCL both have great food, wonderful customer service, fantastic shows, and lots of fun things to do. You can't go wrong either way.

i havent been on RC but i would say, with their ages, this would be the right time to start with disney. i mean, soon they will think disney isnt cool. but they will be wrong...then they will miss the disney cruise and want to go on another...i have learned :)

Actually, I think I have read the the FOS holds around 4,300 passengers!

Which RC ship would you say is on the same level as the Wonder or Magic?

Just wanted to let you know that Freedom has both and Eastern and a Western Itinerary as I was trying to decide which to do. LOL.

At some age Disney may not seem cool to your children. The biggest problem w/ asking for this recommendation is that we don't know your children. Are they the type to join in w/ the group activities? My DS never got into the DCL group activities, except for the cruise when he was 8 and played PS2 until the Lab closed every night w/ the other boys. During the daytime of most of our 4 DCL cruises he has lived at the basketball court, w/ some ping pong, some arcade, and some swimming pool mixed in. He has gone on 1 of our 3 RCI cruises, at age 9, on the Radiance, and he loved the available activities on that ship, but again, did not participate in the kids club (Adventure Ocean on RCI) activities. After the fact, when I asked him which he would rather do next, RCI or DCL, he said "either, I like them equal, but could we go on a royal caribbean ship ship that has the skating rink?". So I have both another Disney cruise and a Voyager class cruise scheduled.

Yes, there is a premium price, typically, for DCL over RCI, on the truly comparable itineraries, same weeks, comparable ships. I believe that the most fair comparison of ships would be the Radiance class ships, though obviously the Mariner of the Seas gets the comparison because of the same port of embarkation. In the end, we chose Adventure of the Seas instead of Mariner for '08 because that cruise will be just 4 months after an Eastern itinerary on the Magic, and I just didn't feel like doing such a similar set of islands again so soon. When we cruise on RCI, yes, we can book a superior class of stateroom than we can on DCL, but the Christmas week 2007 sailing, comparing the Magic to the Mariner, we are in a cat. 8 on Disney for about the same price as a D1 balcony stateroom (approx. comparable to a Cat. 6). I'm okay w/ that tradeoff one more time. Sometimes though the difference is more like a JS on RCI for a similar price as a cat. 8 on DCL (we like cat. 8's).

DS has not been bored on DCL as a 9 yr old even though he did not go to the clubs much, if at all on some cruises. As a 9 yr old he rated the experiences equal. He liked the shows on Disney, no interest in the vegas reviews on RCI. He liked Pluto's and the ice cream at Scoops--now Goofy's--about the same as the windjammer.

We liked Disney's rotational restaurants better than RCI's dining rooms, but found the windjammer to be a much better casual option than the Beach Blanket/Topsiders buffets (though Parrot Cay is a nicer option than the deck 9 buffets). Palo was nice, so was Chops and Portofino. But honestly, food tastes are so subjective that you will find many who had the opposite opinion.

We just booked the Freedom. DS9 (will be 10 when we sail) chose it and said he wants to do the stuff offered on board. I got the impression he didn't "need" the Disney characters, etc and just wanted to go. He is really looking forward to it.

For the adults (who are paying), I compared the Magic vs. Mariner back in January. I have booked the Freedom for January 2008 and if I compare the price I paid last week for Freedom vs. the DCL price about a year out from booking I saved over $1,400 (January 06 for sailing Jan 07 - I priced this out earlier this year). Granted I won't truly know the difference, until DCL comes out with pricing for its 2008 sailings, but I think I saved a bit of money by trying the Freedom of the Seas.

are you on our side of Peterborough or the Keene side? :teeth:

My son who is 16 had the time of his life on "Disney Magic". They kept him busy for the entire cruise. They have a club just for teens, and he loved it. He also made many friends that he is still keeping contact with. I chose Disney because of my son and I am glad I did so. It cost about 25-30% more then other cruise lines, but it was worth it.

Other then the pools (mostly the kid pools, and only at certain times) I did not feel overcrowded on the ship. Also on the excursions I feel they did a good job at not overcrowding. We did a snorkel, catamaran trip in Cozumel and Disney had two catamaran's for the trip. There was a third Catamaran that arrived a little later and it was from another Cruise ship. That catamaran had at least twice the amount of people that ours had.

Freedom of the seas looks great, but I could not even imagine tendering twice as many people as what the Disney ship carries.
I think Freedom will have a lot of kinks to work out before it is smooth sailing.

I have sailed RC before and think they are very good to, but for kids I would say Disney is the best choice.

So in summary, if you have the extra money to spend for Disney I would go for it.

The last time I checked, they were only offering Western. This is great to know -- thanks!!! Time to look again! LOL!

I think the Vision or Radiance class ships are on par with the Magic and Wonder size wise.
