what the heck is the disney vacation club?? and whatever it is, is it worth it???

I am a DVC owner but it's a bit complicated. It's much like a timeshare where you purchase points that allow you to stay in a particular size accomodation during a certain season in a particular resort.

For our family it was absolutely worth it! It gets us to the mouse's house more often! ::MickeyMo For your family, you have to decide that on your own.
You can learn about it from reading these boards, but I would first go to the Timeshare Store's FAQ page FAQ page
[edited to say a link from TSS back to Dis], and then DVC's own web page (there's a link off TSS page). Learn the basics, then come and learn the little nuances that make it special to so many.
Have fun learning about DVC!
Jill :)

For us it's worth it. We love disney. :Pinkbounc

Its like a timeshare only better....don't have to go the same weeks every year, you get the magic of disney, have the ability to use your points at other places that aren't Disney themed! As to whether its worth it for you and yours, is up to you. Check at the Disney Vacation Club site and see if you would be interested.

At the top of this screen click on the link for Frequently Asked Questions. That will get you started on what DVC is all about.

While the Timeshare Store is a sponsor of the DISboards, and specifically of the DVC boards, the DVC FAQ's are part of the DIS. They are not TTS FAQ's.

Ask us owners and you'll get the same response, "YES!"
Read, read, read these boards and you'll find out ALOT about DVC.
(But keep in mind most of us are addicted to pixie dust.) :rotfl2:

It's much like a timeshare ...
It's not "much like a timeshare", it IS a timeshare, but one that is much easier to access and one that is not tied into specific weeks. It is like a pre-paid Disney vacation for up to 50 years for those of us who need that "Disney fix" at least every other year. Sounds like you "just heard the secret". ;)

The DVC is a timeshare. Rather than buying a period of time though, you buy points, which you then spend based on the size unit, the length of your stay, and the time of year.

You decide the # of points you want and you buy them. You need to think of how you vacation, how much time you'd want to spend in WDW & what size unit you'd need. Studios& 1BRs sleep 4 (5 if one can be in a pack & play), 2BRs sleep 8, Grand Villas(3BRs)sleep 12. You can buy points from Disney. I believe they are selling Saratoga Springs Resort right now...it is their newest resort. They also sometimes have resales at other resorts, although they are not as quick to tell you about that, since they really like to sell out their newest property. I believe they are selling for $95 per point. You can also purchase a resale through a resaler. The Timeshare Store is the sponsor for this board, and they have many contracts available. DH & I purchased a 2nd contract as a resale through them about 3 years ago and it was a very good experience. If you purchase through Disney, they will offer you financing. If you purchase through a resaler, you generally have to have some other form of financing, since I don't believe they offer financing. We paid cash for our resale, but I have also heard of folks who paid for it with thier Disney CC then paid off the Disney CC the next motnh with a home equity loan. That way, they get the Disney Rewards dollars and the tax advanatge of the home equity loan. We bought our 1st contract in 1997 through Disney, and took out a 10 year loan on it, because that ahd the cheapest monthly payment. We took a 10 year loan because it had the cheapest monthly payment, and our thought process was that we could always pay more on the loan to pay it off faster, but if we had a month where money was a little tight, all we "had" to pay was the cheapest monthly payment. We did end up paying it off in about 2.5 years.

The DVC is not a financial investment, in terms of money-making. However, if you are a person who would go to WDW at least every other year, it is a worthwhile investment to look into. You get at least as nice of an accomodation as you would in a deluxe hotel if you stay in a studio, and if you go to a 1BR or larger, the accomodations are just amazing. Even the studio has a kitchenette, the 1BR & larger had a full kitchen and laundry and jacuzzi in the master bedroom.

We have owned since 1997, and still feel that it was one of the best purchases we have ever made. We enjoy vacationing in a more home-like atmosphere. It's great to sit on the balcony in the morning with a cup of tea, it's great to have more space to spread out, the people are nice, the units are well-maintained overall, the themeing is great.

Good luck with your decision.

DVC is worth it for my family, but you need to figure out if it is worth it for you. We called about DVC and they sent us the information through FedEx. We reviewed the information and added up the hotel bills from 5 or 6 trips and it was a no-brainer. It is a great mental health investment, knowing that you can go on vacation every year! This year, we used our DVC to exchange 6 nights at Juniper Hill Inn in Windsor, VT, which is a wonderful bed and breakfast and we will use DVC for 2 weeks during Food and Wine Festival which is the primary reason why we bought DVC.

Note that the minimum buy in from Disney is 150 points, which is something like $13,000 dollars now. Plus maintance of around $4 (or so) per point per year.

Is it worth it - if you regularly go to Disney, can plan ahead, don't do a lot of weekends, are an onsite snob, and stay in at least a moderate (but prefer Deluxes), probably. But its a lot of money upfront. Even if you fit the profile above, it may not be worth it if you need to finance, have other bills to pay, don't have any savings, or don't have a secure job.

It doesn't pay for your park tickets (although DVC members get a discount on Annual Passes), food (though DVC rooms are easier to cook in - even studios have kitchenettes and the bigger units have kitchens) or transportation to WDW - those expenses are significant to a lot of people.
