Disney Transportation vs. Renting a Car

I appreciate all the insights here! We have decided to stick to Disney transportation, and just figure out how to fill the void left behind by the absence of ME, which we loved. We do really like not having to think about navigating at all while on property. It's so luxurious! You've all reminded me of the reasons we love that.

We're booked at CBR for our next trip, largely because of the skyliner! I'm so excited to try it!

Over the years before DME, we would always rent a car. It provided more flexibility if we wanted to go sight-seeing/shopping/eat off property or take a trip to the Space Center. We used DME during our pre-covid trip to Disney in 2019. Thought it was great that someone else handled our luggage, we didn't have to read maps/use GPS to get to our hotel. The roads on the property can be a bit confusing with lots of traffic if you don't go frequently. Once at Disney, we used their onsite buses to get to the various parks not serviced by the monorail and thought they worked fine. Yes, sometimes a bus just left as we got to the bus stop, but usually within 20 minutes another would arrive. Very convenient and worked well for us, someone else does the driving and you don't have to worry about finding a parking space. We don't plan to return until the covid situation is behind us, but for those who do go at this time, I can see an advantage to a rental car since only your family will be using it.

Absolutely. That's what I'm thinking, too - we'd be more likely to rent a car if we were going right now. We aren't going for a year, and hopefully things will be...well, more normal than now?...by then.

To me it all depends on what you are going to do with the car. If you are paying to rent the car for the week just to drive to the parks each day I wouldn't do it. If you are planning on leaving property for meals or shopping it might make sense. My wife got back a couple weeks ago from a quick trip, she stayed at a skyliner resort and used Uber to get to Disney Springs, MK. The cost for that was half of what the rental car would have been without figuring in parking. Now with no ME, if the Uber cost from MCO and back is the same cost as the car, I might be swayed.

We ALWAYS rent a car. We like to go to Universal and Fun Spot and other places off property and obviously we can't do that without renting a car. (NOTE: Most of the time, we stay off-site.) Even when we stay on-site, we prefer to have a car.

Since it'll just be my daughter and I on the next vacation, I think we'll not worry about a rental (unless the cost comes way down, because holy cow!) and just use rideshares. Granted we are staying onsite at each place so getting to the parks isn't a concern. But as the time gets closer maybe the prices for cars will drop and we'll reserve one. We shall see!
